Brits face airport hell at sunny hotspot with lengthy delays ruining holidays before they've even begun
Brits travelling to Lanzarote airport are likely to endure an 'uncomfortable and chaotic experience'.
Oswaldo Betancort, the president of the island, made the comment amid calls for urgent action at the travel hub.
Following numerous complaints in recent years, Mr Betancort is now calling for a meeting with the Spanish airport authority, AENA.
According to the politician, among the issues at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, there are not enough police on duty when compared to the number of passengers - a situation he described as 'unacceptable'.
'It is unacceptable that residents and visitors have to endure long waits due to insufficient staff at security checkpoints,' Mr Betancort said.
'More human and material resources are needed to guarantee efficient operation.'
Some 800,000 travellers passed through the airport in March this year, making it the country's tenth busiest in terms of passenger volume (and the third busiest in the Canary Islands).
The complaints received by the airport in recent years include how long it takes to traverse the hub, with passengers noting that there are long waits for both baggage collection and at passport controls.
This can take people around an hour - after which, they then have to queue up and wait for a significant amount of time for a taxi, with queues reportedly filling the concourse.
According to the Mirror, one holidaymaker described being 'shocked' at how long they had to wait for a taxi.
After spending around an hour collecting their luggage and getting through passport control, they said they had been looking forward to getting to the hotel - before being confronted by a 'really massive' queue for cabs.
The holiday maker described this queue as 'literally snaking around the concourse', adding that there must have been around 300 people waiting for a car.
'It took us 55 minutes in total to get a taxi, which did nothing for our mood or Lanzarote's reputation,' they added.
'When we asked a taxi driver what the problem was, he said there were not enough taxis to cope with the number of arrivals. The time, we must point out, was 7.30pm, so probably not even the busiest time of the day.'
And it's not just people holidaying in the area who have raised issues: locals also feel there is 'significant mismatch' between the demand for amenities like taxis and the supply.
According to the authorities, the solution is to create a digitalised service, and talks are being co-ordinated with the taxi association in order to proceed.
There are reportedly plans to expand César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, in an effort to improve both the standard of service and efficiency of operations.
The aim is to expand and remodel Terminal 1, according to the Airport's Master Plan, as well as expanding check-in, boarding and security control areas.
In addition, connecting terminals 1 and 2 in the boarding area, past security control, is also in the plan.

Cheryl said: "We were sort of looking at each other thinking 'what's he on about'? "We were all scared but there was no sense of panic as such on board. Everybody seemed to come together and just looked out for each other. We all wanted to make sure everyone was ok." Everyone was told to remain in their seats. The crew searched under the seats and in the overhead lockers to check that all the luggage was accounted for. Cheryl said: "I think they were looking for a black rucksack." Passengers reportedly tried to message loved ones to tell them what was happening as they anxiously waited for updates from the cabin crew. The group initially thought someone had phoned in a bomb threat - only later did they learn a handwritten note was found by a crew member in one of the aircraft's toilets. The pilot then announced a risk assessment had been done and the threat was deemed low, meaning the plane would no longer be landing earlier in Portugal. "We were taken to a remote part of the airport and there were police and fire engines surrounding the plane. We had to get off one-by-one." The group then had to wait for the emergency services on the ground to check through the luggage before they were allowed to leave. Cheryl explained: "We had to stand on the tarmac with all the luggage but we weren't allowed to touch of any of it. "They brought sniffer dogs and the bomb squad so we just had to stand their and watch before they let us on the bus. "We got taken to some form of compound where there were no refreshments and just one toilet. "We just had to wait their until they had approval from the police to let us go to get back to the normal part of the airport where we could go through immigration and collect our cases." The friends are now unwinding in Lanzarote with a drink or two to help 'settle their nerves' after the ordeal. They are due to fly back home on Sunday - and are hoping that flight will be less eventful. Cheryl said: "It was such a weird experience especially as I'm a quite anxious flyer so I don't know how we did it. Even though we were all scared, we just stuck together and tried to keep it calm." She added that the cabin crew from TUI remained calm and were "brilliant" with all the passengers. Specialists from the GEDEX (Explosives Deactivation Group), the Fiscal and Border Section, investigation units and citizen security patrols all intervened, as reported by The Sun on Thursday. The inspection found no explosive device on board. Flight BY6422 landed at Lanzarote airport at around 10.55am on Thursday. A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport said: 'We are aware of an incident involving flight TOM6422 from Cardiff to Lanzarote on 19/06/25. "The safety of our passengers is our number one priority. No concerns or suspicious activity were raised prior to departure.' Spain's Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine who wrote the note. The force stressed that this type of act is a serious crime, as it causes alarm, compromises public safety and forces specialised resources to be used. TUI has been contacted for comment.

While collecting shells might appear like a harmless beach activity, in Sardinia, it could cost you over £2,500. Local law prohibits taking shells or pebbles from any beach on the island in a bid to protect the area's ecosystem and prevent the beaches from eroding. Studies suggest removing shells from a seashore could impact an area's ecosystem as many animals live inside the husks. Just a few years later customs police on the Mediterranean island slapped 41 travellers with penalties of up to €3,000 (£2,580) in just a few days alone. Collectively they attempted to swipe 220lb (100kg) of beach items in separate incidents. Locals grew fed up with tourists trying to take a piece of the beach home with them - and then attempting to flog it for a profit. There is even a dedicated Facebook page - called "Sardinia robbed and plundered" - to highlight the problem, which has amassed 37,722 followers. Visitors have been caught at airport and harbour customs checks, while police and the military have also been monitoring websites for unlawful sales. Spanish Beaches Close Due to Dangerous Sea Creature Cops reported dozens of illicitly advertised beach items - some with "high prices". Islanders warned the issue is creating an environmental emergency. Pierluigi Cocco, an environmental scientist and resident of the Sardinian capital Cagliari, told the BBC that the beaches were "the main reason why tourists are attracted to the island of Sardinia". He said that although taking sand home served as a reminder of a "treasured memory", it could contribute to the reduction of beaches in the future. In 2019, a French couple were caught with 40kg of sand in the boot of their car. Police found the sand crammed into 14 plastic bottles taken from a beach in Chia, southern Sardinia. The couple claimed they wanted to take it home as a "souvenir" and did not know they had committed an offence.
