How bad planning and rumours led to Bengaluru stampede

How bad planning and rumours led to Bengaluru stampede Team TOI TNN Updated: Jun 5, 2025, 19:28 IST IST The stampede that left 11 dead and over 70 injured might have been prevented with better planning that prioritised the safety of the thousands that came to cheer their team's victory in the IPL. Inside the packed MA Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, the stands were packed on Wednesday and there were an equal number of people outside. When the Royal Challengers Bengaluru players emerged on the balcony a little before 5.30pm to individually hold the team's first IPL trophy aloft, they were greeted with thunderous applause. When star batsman Virat Kohli took the mic to answer a question, the roars threatened to bring the roof down. For a full five minutes, the darling of the masses couldn't get a word in, such was the cacophonous response to his presence.
