Kerry retain Munster crown with late Mary O'Connell goal

RTÉ News25-05-2025

Kerry retained their TG4 Munster Senior Football Championship title in dramatic fashion at Mallow on Sunday.
For long periods of the game Waterford were in front and looked like running out winners, but a late goal from Mary O'Connell was the difference between the sides in the end.
That came after their first goal in the 52nd minute which reduced the margin to only a point between the sides.
But the experience of the title holders got them through this tough test as they retain the cup after a top class game.
Kellyann Hogan opened the scoring for Waterford with Caoimhe Evans replying for Kerry.
Kerry took the lead four minutes in when Niamh Carmody scored from distance despite playing against the strong wind.
Some good play, between Hogan and Karen McGrath set up Lauren McGregor to equalise for Waterford.
A blistering run from Hannah Power saw her play Clare Walsh in as the Déise went in front after nine minutes.
Using the wind in their favour they went further ahead when Brid McMaugh scored, to make it 0-04 to 0-02 after 10 minutes.
That became a three point lead when another great run, this time from McGregor, saw her split the posts.
Danielle O'Leary kept Kerry in touch when she pointed, as her side trailed by 0-05 to 0-03 after 22 minutes.
Hogan, who was dominating at midfield, got her second of the tie and she added another to make it 007 to 0-03 with four minutes until half-time.
A free from Hogan put four between the sides, before Anna Galvin scored to make it 0-08 to 0-05 at half-time, with all to play for in the second half.
O'Shea got the first point of the second half to reduce the deficit as Kerry were now playing with the wind advantage.
Katie Murry kept Waterford's running game going and it resulted in a fine point from McGrath as Kerry were finding the blustery conditions difficult to deal with.
McGregor was on target again, as despite playing against the wind, Waterford were still much the better side, now leading by double scores, 0-10 to 0-06.
But from a Waterford wide, Niamh Ní Chonchúir caught a brilliant ball in midfield, turned and took on the Waterford defence.
Her pass found O'Leary and she blasted to the back of the net, to make it 1-06 to 0-10 and it was game on again.
With two minutes to go Kerry took the lead when Mary O'Connell pounced on a short Waterford kickout to score their second goal to make it 2-06 to 0-10.
Despite the best efforts of Waterford, the champions held out for the win as both move on to the All-Ireland series in a weeks.
In that Kerry will face Mayo and Cork, as Waterford will be pitted against Dublin and Leitrim.

Six years of call-ups and still no cap - the Irish star stuck in purgatory

Max O'Leary is hoping to finally break his international duck this week - six years after first being called up by Ireland. The Bristol City keeper has been knocking on the Ireland door since May 2019 when Mick McCarthy brought him in as cover for Mark Travers. But since then there have been two managerial changes - plus an interim boss - but still no cap for the English-born keeper who qualifies for Ireland via his Kerry-born grandfather. O'Leary, 28, said: 'I've been around a while now and seen a few managers. Hopefully, I'll get my opportunity soon. 'I'm ready if needed. I have always been happy to come across and hook up with the players in camp and have enjoyed it every time. 'The atmosphere is great. I'm ready to go and if I get that chance, I'll be happy to take it. It's something I've wanted to do and I've put in the hard work. This is just another thing to tick off, and it'd be a great honour.' Since he first got called into the Ireland squad, O'Leary has played 125 games straight in the Championship, maturing into a much better keeper than the 22-year-old version of himself. He says: 'You get into a rhythm of playing, especially with the volume of the Championship, you get to know your body. And feel like I have done well over that longer period of time. Obviously, there are going to be mistakes in there, but the consistency I am really happy with. 'With Bristol City, I had to bide my time and be patient which was how I ended up going out on a few loans. I know I wasn't ready to make that step up. 'Nigel Pearson was the manager at the time and he just said 'go and express yourself, you are going to make mistakes. I don't care. I am going to back you'. 'And I think just having that confidence to step up.' Now he is seeking the next step with the Boys in Green who play Senegal and Luxembourg this week. O'Leary said: 'If asked, I will be ready.'

Denise O'Sullivan: Wales loss still hurts but it will stand to us with World Cup push

Initially Denise O'Sullivan admitted the pain from the Republic of Ireland's failure to qualify for this summer's Women's European Championship means she will be doing everything she can to avoid watching it. But quickly, upon a brief reflection, the Cork native would backtrack on that statement to insist she will tune in but only to support her North Carolina Courage teammates that will be involved in the tournament in Switzerland when it kicks off on July 2. Ireland had the chance to be there themselves and make history by qualifying for back-to-back major tournaments in the process, but a 2-1 loss to Wales at the Aviva Stadium in their playoff second leg last December dashed those dreams. 'I think I'll be switching the TV off, doing everything I can not to watch it, but I have teammates from Courage playing in it. 'I know I'm saying I'll be switching the TV off, but I'll watch to cheer them on. It's still devastating not to be there, for sure,' said the Cork native, speaking after Ireland's 1-0 win over Slovenia at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night. And while it was nice for O'Sullivan to again taste victory in front of her home crowd, and the 40 or so family members in attendance, it wasn't the 4-0 victory they needed to leapfrog their opponents and secure automatic promotion to League A in the UEFA Women's Nations League. The Girls in Green (who are 26th in the FIFA world rankings) are now destined for the playoffs yet again where they will meet either Austria (ranked 18th), Iceland (13th), Belgium (20th) or Denmark (12th) with the draw taking place on Friday. 'It's another chance in October and we'll find out on Friday. We'll be ready for that. At least having another chance is a positive,' continued O'Sullivan, who also discussed the impact made by Carla Ward since she took over for Eileen Gleeson before the start of this Nations League campaign. 'We have experience under our belt. I've heard the team names, all high level so we'll have to be ready for that but it's another chance for us. Denise O'Sullivan in action against Kaja Korošec of Slovenia. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile 'We want to be at that World Cup in Brazil (in 2027). That defeat against Wales from last year can stand to us going into the playoff. 'We've learnt a lot, it still hurts a lot because the pain hasn't gone from that game. There's definitely been a lot of change (under Ward). It took a long time to find our feet and way. 'We didn't start well in any game but came out with wins which shows the team's character. I still think we're still trying to get used to the way Carla and the staff want us to play but five wins out of six is positive. 'It will definitely take time. The way Carla and staff are implementing her style of play, it doesn't happen overnight. You can see even in the first half how we created a number of chances. As a team we want to keep doing that and get better. "Losing Louise, Fahey, Diane and Julie-Ann, so many at the same time, is really tough on the team so I think Katie, Courtney, myself and a few others must take the responsibility of driving the team on.' Rather than competing at the Euros, next up for Ireland is a glamourous friendly double-header against an extremely talented USA side (ranked number one in the world) in Colorado and Cincinnati on June 27 (Irish time) and 29 respectively. And while Carla Ward has announced that captain Katie McCabe will not be making the trip for fear of 'burnout' following her Champions League winning excursions with Arsenal recently, O'Sullivan confirmed she will be involved. And for once, she won't face an arduous journey to represent her country. 'It's my one week in the whole year I get off from Courage but that's okay. I'm happy to play because any chance I get playing for my country I want to be there. I'll be there. 'I'm excited. For once, I don't have to travel 20 hours. I won't have jet lag, but the rest will. 'I'm looking forward to it. USA are a top, top team and we can go out to challenge ourselves. 'It will be a brilliant experience,' concluded O'Sullivan.
