As Death Threats Continue, Karmelo Anthony Is Forced into Hiding Before Murder Trial
Since being charged with murder, a Texas teen's family has been vocal about threats to their safety. And after weeks of alleged harassment, now it seems drastic steps have been taken ahead of 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony's trial.
The teen was accused of the murder of another 17-year-old, Austin Metcalf, during a track meet. Anthony bailed out of jail after Judge Angela Tucker lowered his bond and placed him on house arrest, as we previously reported. Now, Anthony has been removed from his family home in response to growing concerns, according to a Next Generation Action Network (NCAN) news release obtained by the Daily Mail.
The move was approved by the courts, and the location of the teen hasn't been shared with the public for obvious reasons. NCAN said in a statement there's been an 'alarming increase in death threats, continued harassment, and physical intimidation targeted at the family's home' since his arrest.
The threats reflect growing tensions as the high-profile killing of Metcalf continues to divide the nation. As The Root previously reported, Anthony was arrested after an April 2 altercation between Anthony, Metcalf, and his twin brother, Hunter, during a track meet. According to police, the brothers confronted Anthony about sitting under a tent designated for athletes, and that's when things escalated.
Anthony allegedly told Austin, 'Touch me and see what happens.' That's when witnesses say a scuffle ensued, sparking the fatal stabbing. Austin died in his brother's arms as Anthony fled the scene. The 17-year-old claimed self defense to arresting officers.
During a press conference held by Anthony's reps, the teen's mother, Kayla Hayes, addressed misinformation concerning her family. 'Whatever you think that happened between Karmelo and the Metcalf boys, my three younger children, my husband and I didn't do anything to deserve to be threatened, harassed and lied about,' she said.
Hayes went on to claim 'the lies and the false accusations,' such as the family buying a new lavish home, purchasing new cars and even hiring security, are without merit and have put her family in danger. 'I don't know why we are being targeted and discriminated against before a fair trial,' she continued. 'Our son deserved the same rights under the law that everyone is afforded to.'
After Anthony went into hiding, NGAN shared examples of the alleged harassment against the teen's family. This included strangers allegedly loitering near the family home, sending copies of Metcalf's obituary, and going as far as to send fake food delivers to the family's door, Fox 5 reported.
A rally also took place this past weekend at Frisco's Kuykendall Stadium, where the stabbing took place. The protest was organized by Protect White Americans, an group founded by Jake Lang who was arrested during the Capitol Insurrection, according to the Guardian. Signs at the rally read 'protect white Americans' and 'stop black violence on white Americans,' the Daily Mail reported.

As President Donald Trump and his administration continue their systematic attack on trans Americans, both activists and unaffiliated individuals are targeting the FBI's latest attempt to prosecute doctors giving trans youth gender-affirming care. On Monday, the FBI asked for tips on doctors or hospitals 'who mutilate under the guise of gender-affirming care,' which refers to surgical intervention for trans youth. But the 'criminals' the Trump administration is hunting may not even exist — every major American health organization is firm that surgical intervention does not happen for children under 12, and is incredibly rare for minors between 15 and 17. Since this tip line seems most likely to target providers and programs helping trans youth with non-invasive therapies — even as the Trump administration threatens to remove funding — people are onrushing the line with incredibly demeaning and foul-mouthed comments, according to two sources familiar with the matter and a recording shared with Rolling Stone. The Trump administration's return to the White House has been marked by the dogged targeting of transgender youth and their health care. In January, Trump issued an executive order calling gender affirming care the 'chemical and surgical mutilation' of children and threatening to remove federal funding from hospitals that performed it. In April, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi — who served as one of the lawyers on President Trump's first impeachment defense team — issued a memo stating the Justice Department's intention to use several existing U.S. laws to investigate providers of trans health care, including those prohibiting female genital mutilation. So on June 2, the FBI asked anyone who had tips of doctors or practitioners performing gender affirming 'surgical procedures' to report them directly to the FBI tip line. (It doesn't feel coincidental that this request was sent on the second day of Pride month, typically a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community.) 'Help the FBI protect children,' the Trump FBI — fronted by the president's uber-loyalists Kash Patel and Dan Bongino — posted to X on Monday. 'As the Attorney General has made clear, we will protect our children and hold accountable those who mutilate them under the guise of gender-affirming care. Report tips of any hospitals, clinics, or practitioners performing these surgical procedures on children at 1-800-CALL-FBI or These assessments of trans healthcare as 'mutilation' go directly against the opinions of every major medical body in the U.S. — including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. According to reports from both the National Institute of Health and Harvard's School of Public Health, researchers could not find any evidence of children under 12 receiving any kind of surgical intervention. For minors 15 to 17 years old, almost all who underwent surgery had procedures focused on their chests — but at a lower rate than cisgender males. But in May, a 400-page report released by the Department of Health and Human Services recommended treatment plans entirely similar to conversion therapy. So it didn't take long for this social-media post and the accompanying contact information to make its way into the group chats of numerous pro-LGBTQ allies and advocates. The two sources say that various concerned citizens, activists, and other individuals immediately began making calls — including anonymous VoIP ones — to the 800 number, delivering profane tirades and insults. At times, pissed-off callers were frustrated they couldn't seem to leave a voicemail and were left chastising what appeared to be just a human operator for the bureau. One caller tells this magazine that they called the hotline so that they could recommend that the second Trump administration 'eat my entire asshole.' An audio file shared with Rolling Stone featured a gay former federal employee, who requested anonymity, simply screaming into the federal tip line: 'Fuck off, Nazi dickheads!' The other source familiar with the matter says that 'more than a dozen' of their friends and advocates they know in pro-LGBTQ political circles were actively crashing the FBI tip line with angry remarks or notes of protest denouncing the administration's targeting of trans Americans and demonization of trans health care. However cathartic any spamming of the FBI hotline may be for any number of trans rights supporters, some activists and legal experts warn that callers or pranksters should be incredibly careful about what they say on a recorded federal tip line — especially given the uniquely lawless administration that has shown an eager willingness to crack down on Trump's enemies when there's no evidence of any wrongdoing. 'There are absolutely a lot of people who want to clog up the snitch line,' this person says. 'My advice is: Don't make anything that can be construed as a threat. Just speak your mind, be short and sweet about it, hang up.' The FBI did not provide comment on this story. This isn't the first time this new Trump administration has been subjected to heavy bombardments of mean spam. In late February, top Trump adviser Elon Musk demanded that federal employees reply to 'an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,' or face a forced 'resignation.' As Rolling Stone reported at the time, after copies of the email were leaked online, the government inbox was predictably flooded with pranks and what one Trump administration official described as 'very rude' and foul-mouthed emails. As journalist Jael Holzman, who has covered the Republican Party's vigorous crackdown on trans people for this magazine, has warned, efforts to launch investigations of the parents of trans kids were incubated at the state level. In recent years, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton emerged as a high-profile proponent of wielding state power against these families. More recently, some of Paxton's team have filtered into the new Trump administration. 'These decades of established research standards of care that have been empirically validated are now relegated to junk science, and the legitimate science is whatever they want to make up — but that's the Trump administration for you,' Douglas C. Haldeman, PhD, a clinical psychologist who's worked with people recovering from conversion therapy, told Rolling Stone in May. Of course, the attempts to clutter up the feds' anti-trans tip line will not stop the Trump administration's multi-pronged onslaught on trans Americans, healthcare providers, and others. But it's not nothing. Raquel Willis, co-founder of the Gender Liberation Movement, tells Rolling Stone that building a practice of defiance is an important part of making sure communities don't become complacent to Trump-era harassment attempts — especially those that seem to be attempts at control couched in safety language. 'Even though this FBI tip line and the discourse around it seem maybe innocuous to a lot of people, it does speak to the desire to criminalize bodily autonomy for young trans people and also criminalize private decisions that they're making with their parents and qualified physicians about their care,' Willis says. 'It's very interesting that conservatives have taken on this crusade to infringe on private decisions when for so long they claimed they didn't want state intervention in everyday life. This is not actually about some deeper desire to protect anyone. It's just a desire to control people.' A bat in Morgan County has tested positive for rabies, health officials warn
MORGAN, Utah () — The Weber-Morgan Health Department is reminding residents to ensure their pets' vaccinations are up to date and avoid touching bats or other wild animals after a bat tested positive for rabies. This marks the first report of a rabies-positive bat in Utah for 2025. Health officials warn that as the weather warms up, the chances of coming into contact with rabies increase. 'Bats play an important role in our ecosystem and the majority of the bats in our population are healthy and tend to keep to themselves,' explained Amy Carter, a communicable disease nurse with the Weber-Morgan Health Department. 'However, if you see one in the daylight, or if it's in a place where you or your pet can pick it up, there's a good chance it is ill.' Every year, roughly 60,000 Americans receive medical treatment following a potential rabies exposure, but control measures in the United States have helped reduce the virus as a public health threat. 'The good news is that rabies is preventable,' Carter said. 'Vaccination is important because it is how we prevent rabies in our cats and dogs. It saves time and heartache if your pet is involved in a biting incident or comes in contact with a rabid bat or other animal,' said Carter. If you are bitten or scratched by a bat or any other wild animal, the Weber-Morgan Health Department said you should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and visit your doctor. If possible, safely contain the bat or animal and contact the so it can be tested for rabies. Take a stand against terror in Boulder

() Ever since 251 people were taken hostage during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, a group of residents in Boulder have refused to let the community forget the people who were abducted. The group is the local chapter of the global Run For Their Lives, which organizes events calling for the release of the hostages. Participants in the Boulder chapter have demonstrated by walking in the city's downtown area every week — 80 weeks so far — since November 2023. Their walk on Sunday came on the 604th day since the hostages were taken. It also marked the first time they encountered violence. An assailant attacked the demonstrators with a flamethrower and crude homemade bombs in what federal prosecutors say was an antisemitic hate crime. The attack came amid rising antisemitism throughout the country and followed other recent acts of violence against Jews. The threat of more violence is real. It's uncertain when the group will walk again. The tragedy is compounded to the extent terror muzzles the group's message. It has a single purpose, which no person of conscience should find objectionable: to raise awareness and call for the release of hostages. There are still 58 hostages in Gaza, including four Americans. Roughly 20 are believed to be alive, and group members want the remains of the rest to be given a proper burial. 'This is an international humanitarian crisis, where people from many varying backgrounds and religions and ethnicities were taken hostage. They were not just Israelis,' Shari Weiss, global coordinator of Run For Their Lives, said during an interview this week on WBUR. She acknowledged the horrors that have befallen Gaza as Israeli forces continue military operations that have resulted in more than 50,000 deaths, most of the territory destroyed, and unspeakable hardship among survivors. 'The same people do understand the suffering of the Palestinian people and do understand that they are going through something extremely traumatic. You can absolutely hold space for that at the same time,' Weiss said. When members of the group demonstrate in Boulder, they walk silently for 18 minutes, the number value of the word 'chai,' Hebrew for 'life.' Many of the participants are older adults (the age range of victims is 52 to 88). They carry photos of the hostages. Tara Winer, a member of the Boulder City Council, sometimes joins the group on their walks. 'It's not a protest, it's not a march. Nobody talks, nobody does anything except walk,' said Winer, who is Jewish. 'I'm upset about the hostages, who are still there. So it's just a way to remind myself about them and also to remind my community about them.' Many participants have friends and family in Israel. 'They do not want people to forget these hostages … And this is their way of keeping their memory alive,' Winer said. 'I know on the walks I go to sometimes they mention all the people who have died in captivity. They mention the hostages by name. They say them by name, so people won't forget.' She was not on the walk Sunday. She described the victims as 'good friends.' Police said 12 people were injured in the attack, and at least one was in critical condition, but all are expected to survive. Run For Their LIves organizers intend to continue the walks, though they might stop for a time until adequate security can be ensured. Whatever the group's future, the Boulder and Colorado communities can sustain its humanitarian message. Terrorism succeeds only when its target is cowed or diminished.
