After 275 yrs, rare 'Maha Kumbhabhisekam' held at world's richest Lord Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple
Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 (UNI) Nearly after 275 years, a rare Maha Kumbhabhisekam was performed at the world's richest Lord Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple here on Sunday. The ceremony includes the installation of Golden Thazhikakudam (placing of the golden finial atop the temple), installation of a new idol of Lord Viswaksena and the Ashtabandham ritual at Lord Thiruvambady Sree Krishna temple. The temple authorities decided to conduct the rituals following an astrological assessment held in 2011. The ceremony took place between 7.40 am and 8.40 am in the presence of Travancore Royal Family members and officials of the temple administration. Based on the advice from the Temple Tantri and vastu expert Kanippayyoor Krishnan Namboodiripad, a new idol was crafted by renowned sculptor Thirukoshtiyur Madhavan from Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu. Under the chief supervision of Temple Head Tantri Brahmashri Govindan Namboothirippad, the rituals and ceremonies were conducted by the Temple Tantris Brahmashri Tharananellur N.R Pradeep Namboothirippad, Brahmashri Tharananellur N.R. Satheeshan Namboothirippad and Brahmashri Tharananellur Saji Namboothirippad. The installation ceremony was attended by the Temple Sthani (Hereditary Chief), Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, Yogath Pottimaar, members of both the Administrative and Advisory Committees of the Temple, the Executive Officer, temple staff, and other distinguished guests and invitees. The temple is built in an intricate fusion of the Kerala style and the Dravidian style of architecture, featuring high walls and a 16th-century gopuram. While, as per some traditions, the Ananthapura Temple in Kumbla in Kerala's Kasaragod district is considered the original spiritual seat of the deity (Mulasthanam), architecturally, to some extent, the temple is a replica of the Adikesava Perumal Temple in Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Kerala: Efforts continue to remove 54 containers washed ashore
Kochi, June 7 (UNI) Efforts are on to remove 54 containers washed ashore after the Liberian cargo vessel, MSC ELSA 3, capsized off Kochi on May 25, sources said on Saturday. Around 17 containers washed ashore were removed from the Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram coasts. The removal of containers is being done by the Waterline Shipping appointed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The Waterline Shipping has already removed 13 from Kollam and four from Thiruvananthapuram shores. However, fishermen complained that manual cleaning of plastic pellets, came off sacks and swamped the coast in many areas, is slow. The 184-metre-long ship built in Germany in 1997 was carrying 640 containers, including 13 containing hazardous materials. Over 100 containers are reported to have been lost at sea, and several have washed ashore in Alappuzha, Kollam, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. The vessel was carrying 367.1 tonnes of Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and 84.44 tonnes of marine diesel fuel. UNI DS SS

Hyderabad, June 2 (UNI) Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma, and the First Lady, Sudha Dev Varma, hosted a ceremonial felicitation in honour of the Miss World 2025 winners at the historic Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad on Monday evening, on the occasion of Telangana State Formation Day. A special High Tea was organised to celebrate the global achievements and humanitarian efforts of the pageant winners. The event was graced by the presence of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, several cabinet ministers, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, and other dignitaries. In his address, the Governor extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Telangana, both within India and abroad, marking the state's resilient journey since its formation on June 2, 2014. He highlighted Telangana's transformation into a symbol of inclusive development, cultural revival, and progressive governance. Emphasising the harmony between global elegance and grassroots wisdom, the Governor unveiled a new eco-initiative under the aegis of Raj Bhavan Telangana. The programme promotes the production of biodegradable leaf plates by tribal communities, particularly empowering women and youth through sustainable livelihood opportunities. 'This is not merely a programme,' said the Governor, 'but a movement—for sustainability, for dignity, and for our planet.' In a symbolic gesture underscoring the message of environmental stewardship, all food served at the event was presented on traditional leaf plates handmade by tribal artisans from remote villages of Telangana. With active support from Raj Bhavan, tribal women and youth are being trained in the production of eco-friendly leaf plates and cups—turning indigenous traditions into viable income-generating enterprises. This thoughtful initiative exemplifies the Governor's deep commitment to environmental responsibility and tribal welfare. The Governor also paid glowing tributes to the Miss World 2025 titleholders for their inspiring personal stories and achievements. Opal Suchata Chuangsri of Thailand, who became the first Thai woman to win the Miss World crown after bravely overcoming cancer surgery at the age of 16, was especially honoured for her extraordinary resilience. Hasset Dereje Admassu of Ethiopia, the First Runner-Up, was lauded for her poise and strength in the face of personal adversity. Maja Kladja of Poland and Aurélie Joachim of Martinique, who earned Second and Third Runner-Up titles respectively, were praised for their empowering representation of diversity and inclusion. Other outstanding participants—including Jéssica Scandiuzzi Pedroso, Krishnah Marie Gravidez, and Jasmine Odette Stringer—were also recognised for their meaningful contributions and inspiring presence. Commending the Government of Telangana for its exemplary hosting of the Miss World 2025 pageant, the Governor noted the memorable experiences curated for international guests, including visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient temples, pristine landscapes, and iconic cultural landmarks—each showcasing Telangana's timeless heritage and dynamic cultural fabric. The evening was a celebration of global acclaim and local pride, symbolising Telangana's growing stature as a centre for sustainable innovation, cultural brilliance, and international harmony, a Raj Bhavan communique said.
