
Toronto man, 23, arrested after shots fired in Friday fight in Kanata
A 23-year-old Toronto man has been arrested on a number of charges after shots were fired in a fight in the Kanata area last Friday.

Ottawa police said in a release Wednesday that officers were called just after 4 p.m. Friday on reports of gunfire in a parking lot in the 100 block of Castlefrank Drive, near Abbeyhill Drive.

By the time police arrived, the suspects and the victim had left the area.

Officers determined that three men had been involved in an altercation during which a firearm was discharged.

No injuries were reported.

An investigation by the Ottawa Police Service guns and gangs unit identified Lorne Hicks, 23, of Mississauga, as the suspected shooter.

Hicks was arrested in Toronto over the weekend. He now faces several firearms-related charges, including discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a loaded and unlicensed restricted firearm and careless use and handling of a firearm. He also faces charges of assault, resisting arrest, and various breaches under the Firearms Act.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries. Investigators are looking for anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage of the incident. Ottawa police constable demoted for 14 months over impaired driving conviction
An Ottawa Police Service officer has been ordered demoted following the settlement of a disciplinary process sparked by his arrest and conviction for impaired driving in late 2024. Article content A 'consent order' by adjudicator Ian Anderson, dated May 23 and published this week on the OPS website, said Serge Fortin would be downgraded from First Class Constable to Second Class Constable for 14 months. Article content Article content Officially, Fortin was penalized for one count of being convicted of an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada and another count of undermining the public trust. Article content He had failed blood-alcohol tests after being stopped at an Ontario Provincial Police RIDE checkpoint on Nov. 26, 2024, the consent order said. On Feb. 3, it added in an agreed statement of facts, he pleaded guilty to an impaired driving charge in court and received both a 12-month driving suspension and a $1,500 fine. Article content

Tracy Duncan's slaying is Ottawa's fourth femicide this year
Police have identified four Ottawa deaths as 'femicides' this year, exceeding the total of three femicides reported in all of 2024. Article content The Ottawa Police Service became the first Canadian police force to use 'femicide' in its public statements in 2022, even before adopting a formal definition. Article content Article content A femicide is generally defined as 'the killing of women and girls because of their gender,' often driven by gender roles, discrimination towards women and girls or unequal power relations between women and men. Article content Article content The four Ottawa deaths declared femicides so far this year: Article content • Tracy Duncan ,54, was found dead at her residence on Carousel Crescent in Gloucester at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Stephen Doane, 57, was arrested by police and was charged with second-degree murder. Article content • Renée Descary, 51, was stabbed to death on Heney Street in Lowertown on April 1. Oliver Denai, 24, was charged with second-degree murder. Article content • Brenda Rus, 60, was found dead in a residence on Brentbrook Crescent in Barrhaven on April 6. Robert Rus, 61, was charged with first-degree murder. Investigators said they had reason to believe she was killed and her body was in a local landfill, where search efforts were ongoing.
