North America will have a blood worm moon this week. Here's how you can see it

This week, robed in twilight, a "blood worm" will pierce the night sky. As ominous as that sounds, don't think leeches — think lunar.
Late Thursday night or Friday early morning, North Americans with clear skies can look up to see a full moon with a beautiful reddish hue.
And while it has that eerie nickname, it's not the only one, depending on different cultures.
…Blood?
This event is actually two occurrences coming together: a total eclipse of the moon by the Earth at the same time as it goes through a full moon phase for March. It's not too rare for this to happen. The last March total lunar eclipse was in 1978, according to NASA — though much of North America couldn't see it.
The "blood" part is from the eclipse. When the Earth passes in front of the moon, it obscures the sun's light from hitting it — but some still sneaks through. To understand why the moon turns that colour, amateur astronomer Dave Chapman says you have to imagine you're an astronaut on the moon during the eclipse.
"The sun is shining on the Earth from behind. It's being backlit," explains Chapman, a fellow at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. "The Earth's face will be dark, but along the edge — where the atmosphere is — there is sunlight filtering through."
But that light comes from all the parts of the world that are experiencing sunrises or sunsets. As light during those times are more red and orange, this is the hue that hits the moon and reflects back to us.
However, it's not always blood red. Its variations, from totally invisible to copper, are measured in the Danjon scale. We won't know where this particular eclipse rates on that scale until after it happens.
Chapman says there's another unique quality from this "side-lighting" effect from Earth: It will also change how we perceive the shape of the moon.
"Normally when you look at the full moon ... it doesn't look like a sphere, it just looks like a disc," Chapman told CBC News from Dartmouth, N.S. But the eclipse lighting turns it from a flat, bright, silvery disc into more of "a sphere hanging in the sky."
...Worm?
The timing of this eclipse also aligns with how different cultures around the world refer to the moon during this particular month.
Experts attribute the "worm" moniker to Indigenous tribes in the southern U.S. who would see more insects and earthworms emerge during this time of year, and it stuck through its usage in the Old Farmer's Almanac as March's full moon.
But other cultures didn't see those worms, instead calling it by different names. For example, "more northern tribes of the northeastern United States knew this as the crow moon, with the cawing of crows signalling the end of winter," writes NASA's Gordon Johnston.
To Mi'kmaq, whose traditional territories include Eastern and Atlantic Canada, the moon around March is known as Si'ko'ku's (pronounced see-uke-ay-we-goos), or the maple or maple sugar moon, owing to this time of year when sap starts running down trees.
"A lot of the time, the moons are reflective of the season and the time of year," says Hilding Neilson, an astronomer and professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. He says this contextual naming of lunar cycles is common.
"For many cultures around the world, the moon is something you watch and you see things change [around you]. And so you get various names reflecting community, telling stories and how you operate," Neilson told CBC News from St. John's.
That's why a "blood worm" to some could be a "scarlet crow" or even a "red maple" moon to others.
So when can I see it?
Seeing it in Canada will mean staying up late or waking up very early. The good news is that you won't need any special equipment to view it and light pollution won't affect visibility.
The eclipse's totality will last for just over an hour, with its strongest phase in the middle.

Eastern time: Starting at 2:26 a.m. to 3:31 a.m. on Friday, March 14.
Central time: Starting at 1:26 a.m. to 2:31 a.m. on Friday, March 14.
Mountain time: Starting at 12:26 a.m. to 1:31 a.m. on Friday, March 14.
Pacific time: Starting at 11:26 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, to 12:31 a.m. on Friday, March 14.

Japan's ispace Eyes First Private Landing by Asian Firm

A second lunar lander developed by Japanese space startup ispace Inc. (based in Minato, Tokyo) is set to attempt a moon landing in the early hours of June 6 (Japan time). If successful, it would be the first lunar landing ever achieved by a private company in Asia. The mission also aims to collect samples of lunar soil (regolith) using a small rover and carry out the world's first commercial transaction on the Moon by transferring ownership of the collected material to NASA. Launched in January 2025 from Florida aboard a SpaceX rocket, the lander is currently orbiting the Moon at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers, traveling at around 5,800 kilometers per hour in a circular path. At about 3:15 AM on June 6, the craft's main engine will fire forward to alter its trajectory and initiate descent. According to the mission plan, the lander will initially descend to an altitude of around 20 kilometers using inertia alone. It will then fire its main engine once more to decelerate to approximately 380 kilometers per hour. Upon reaching about three kilometers in altitude, the craft will enter its final landing phase, gradually reducing speed to around two kilometers per hour while adjusting its posture with both the main and auxiliary engines. Touchdown is scheduled for 4:17 AM in the Moon's northern region, near the so-called "Sea of Ice." The original landing time of 4:24 AM was revised on June 4. ispace previously attempted a lunar landing in 2023, but the mission ended in failure after the spacecraft lost altitude data and crashed from roughly five kilometers above the surface. For this second attempt, the company has significantly enhanced its altitude sensors and control systems to enable a more precise descent. Moreover, if ispace's in-house rover manages to traverse the lunar surface and collect regolith, it would become the first private firm in the world to achieve such a feat. These investments highlight British Columbia's leadership in leveraging genomics to address pressing environmental and health challenges, particularly in remote and Indigenous communities. Nature's Fingerprints: eDNA is a New Tool that Reveals What's Living Around Us eDNA is a powerful tool that uses trace genetic material left behind in water, air and soil to detect pathogens, assess ecosystem health and support environmental decision-making. eDNA allows scientists and communities to detect and track species without needing to see them directly, offering a more efficient way to study ecosystems. eDNA can also track health and ecological signals without relying on invasive testing. This technology was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor virus levels in wastewater and is now being expanded to keep people safe, protect biodiversity and help with climate resilience. The projects announced today focus on ensuring these tools are not just scientifically robust, but also community-driven and accessible — especially for regions with limited existing monitoring infrastructure. "These investments reflect how genomics is helping us learn directly from the environments we live in — and how that knowledge can be shared in ways that empower communities," said Federica Di Palma, Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President, Research and Innovation at Genome BC. "By supporting eDNA research rooted in partnership with Indigenous and remote communities, BC researchers are helping lead the way toward more inclusive, real-time approaches to health and environmental monitoring." Three Projects Expanding eDNA Use and Data Sharing The ChùNet and iMicroSeq projects are BC-based projects awarded through Genome Canada's eDNA Surveillance program, which includes a $11.3 million investment in 12 projects across the country aimed at building the scientific, technical and community capacity needed to scale eDNA surveillance. The eDNA Explorer Canada project is a separate initiative funded by Genome BC, though all three projects will coordinate their efforts. ChùNet: Enabling a knowledge sharing network — learning from water and the life it carries Led by: Erin Gill (Simon Fraser University) and Math'ieya Alatini (One Yukon Coalition) This project will establish a community-focused network to share data and knowledge about water-based eDNA monitoring in northern, rural, remote and Indigenous communities in BC and the Yukon. Co-led by academic and community partners, ChùNet will create tailored training resources and deploy a demonstration monitoring project while respecting OCAP® principles. The aim is to build a wholistic foundation for integrating environmental and public health surveillance that builds local priorities into decision making. iMicroSeq: Integrated, inclusive resources supporting environmental sequence data Led by: Fiona Brinkman and Emma Griffiths (Simon Fraser University) This project will develop a national data portal and communications platform that brings together researchers, Indigenous communities, public health officials and other in industry to support more coordinated, integrated microbial eDNA monitoring for wastewater and other water data. iMicroSeq will enhance data sharing, respect Indigenous data sovereignty (CARE and OCAP® Principles), and link human, agricultural and environmental health through a One Health lens. The platform will empower both community and industry innovation in economic, water-based pathogen detection and climate resilience. eDNA Explorer Canada: Upscaling eDNA Explorer to Enable Effective Biodiversity Monitoring in Canada Led by: Caren Helbing (University of Victoria) and Rachel Meyer (University of Santa Cruz & Chief Scientific Officer at eDNA Explorer) This project leverages the eDNA Explorer platform developed in California to create eDNA Explorer Canada. This powerful, easy-to-use portal will allow anyone to understand, evaluate and share eDNA data gathered in Canadian ecosystems, focusing on biodiversity monitoring, conservation and restoration. eDNA Explorer Canada is tailored to meet Canadian environmental standards and sovereignty needs, ensuring data is reliable and legally compliant. It aims to turn raw data into actionable insights that drive environmental protection efforts, building on existing relationships with Indigenous and government agencies established through the iTrackDNA project, which in 2021 and 2023 established Canada's national eDNA standards (learn more about those standards here). ‘Bee Speaker by Adrian Tchaikovsky:' A Book Review

Another month, another book by Adrian Tchaikovsky. This time, returning to his irregular but excellent Dogs of War series. Each book nominally stands on its own. Indeed, I read book 2, Bear Head , before reading book 1, Dogs of War, with little detriment. Having said that, to fully understand the world Tchaikovsky has created, I would recommend reading at least Dogs of War before commencing Bee Speaker. If you haven't read the Dogs of War trilogy, I wholeheartedly recommend that you do. They remain my favorite of Tchaikovsky's books, and some of the best science fiction I have read. The main premise of the Dogs of War universe is that humans have invented bioengineering and used it to create 'Bioforms.' Engineered dogs, bears, and even snakes and reptiles, to be used in the theatre of battle. Both Bear Head and Dogs of War explore the ethics of using non-human sentient creatures to do one's dirty work. Both books are utterly compelling and hooked me from the very first page. Another key component of the books is distributed intelligence systems. Essentially, in the series, hive minds were distributed across Earth and later, Mars. Bees are one such system, and they play a pivotal role in Dogs of War. Unsurprisingly, they take center stage in Bee Speaker. Bee Speaker takes place some time after the previous two books. Civilization has collapsed on Earth, leaving them with some pre-collapse technology, but few ways of recreating it. Mars, meanwhile, is beginning to thrive. The citizens of Mars receive a distress signal from Earth – from bees – and decide they need to investigate. The novel opens with that investigation underway. The Martian explorers have arrived on Earth, and things are about to go very, very wrong. Tchaikovsky delivers again. If a little more slowly. Unlike the other two novels, it took me a while to work my way into Bee Speaker, and I can't quite put my finger on why. It might be because there are several different competing factions (Earth's citizens, as depicted here, have a feel of the Fallout factions to them). The story contains humans and bioforms from both Earth and Mars, and I initially struggled to identify fully with any of them. I think there was some deliberate vagueness for plot reasons, too and I could only appreciate this once I was deeply immersed in the book. And deeply immersed I became! Bee Speaker is a sparkling construct that examines the power and limitations of distributed intelligence (and therefore, by extension, in a more real-world context, AI). Once again, (as he did with Alien Clay as well as the other Dogs of War novels), Tchaikovsky makes us rethink how we see ourselves. Makes us consider the nature of life and the definition of sentience. There is also, as there often is in his novels, a subtle examination of power structures and, in this case, the absurdity of doomsday-prepared billionaires. After reading Bee Speaker , I am happy to maintain that the Dogs of War series are my favorite of Tchaikovsky's books (though his output is so large, I have barely scratched the surface). If you haven't read them, I thoroughly recommend you do. I've yet to encounter anybody who doesn't like them. Will there be more? Who knows? Each story mostly drives down its own cul-de-sac, yet Adrain Tchaikovsky keeps revealing pathways to new roads. May the exploration long continue.
