As the NHL offseason approaches, trade chatter is intensifying—and one name drawing major attention is Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague. According to veteran insider Nick Kypreos, the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins, a franchise valued at $1.75 billion by Forbes, are reportedly 'hot on the trail' of the 26-year-old blueliner.
NHL trade buzz grows louder as Canadiens and Penguins eye Golden Knights' Nicolas Hague
In his recent Toronto Star column, Kypreos highlighted how the scarcity of quality unrestricted free agent defensemen this offseason is pushing Hague's trade value to the forefront. With the Golden Knights facing salary cap constraints, the possibility of moving Hague is becoming increasingly real.
'There aren't many quality UFA defencemen out there, so that makes Nicolas Hague of the Golden Knights a very attractive trade chip if and when Vegas decides to move him because of limited salary-cap space.
I'm hearing the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins are hot on the trail to potentially trade for him,' Kypreos wrote.
The Penguins aren't the only ones circling. Renowned NHL insider Elliotte Friedman also mentioned the Philadelphia Flyers as another suitor. With both the Flyers and Penguins in search of a left-shot defenseman, the race to land Hague could spark a fierce bidding war between division rivals.
Originally selected 34th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by Vegas, Hague has spent six solid seasons with the team. In 2024–25, he finished with 12 points—five goals and seven assists—along with two points in the playoffs. Despite not being a top-tier scorer, Hague's consistent two-way presence and size make him an asset on any blue line.
Currently a restricted free agent, Hague just completed a three-year, $6.8 million deal.
With a new contract likely to command a raise, the Golden Knights may be forced to move him unless they make additional cap space.

Meanwhile, Montreal coach Martin St-Louis recently earned recognition of his own, finishing third in Jack Adams Trophy voting behind Spencer Carbery and Scott Arniel. Despite a first-round playoff exit, the Canadiens' progress under St-Louis adds further intrigue to their interest in Hague, suggesting the franchise is ready to make strategic upgrades.
As the offseason heats up, expect Hague's name to remain front and center in trade rumors.

NHL free agency 2025: Jack Roslovic still unsigned as Toronto Maple Leafs remain in the mix for top forward

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports Despite the flurry of signings early in the NHL free agency period, forward Jack Roslovic remains one of the few notable names still available on the market. The 28-year-old, who netted 22 goals last season, continues to draw interest, particularly from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are reportedly among a handful of teams still pursuing the skilled winger as they navigate salary cap challenges. Toronto Maple Leafs still pursuing Jack Roslovic amid NHL free agency buzz and tight salary cap Roslovic, a former first-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets, split time last season between the Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, and briefly, the New York Rangers. His offensive production and top-six upside have kept him on the radar of several NHL clubs, with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently confirming on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that five to six teams remain interested, including the Maple Leafs. While Roslovic is believed to be seeking the right fit both financially and structurally, Toronto's interest remains steady. However, Friedman noted that the Leafs are 'trying to move money around,' suggesting the team needs to clear cap space before making a formal offer. With a forward group already bolstered by recent additions like Dakota Joshua, Nicolas Roy, Matias Maccelli, and Michael Pezzetta, signing Roslovic could push the Leafs to offload veteran contracts, potentially involving David Kampf or Calle Järnkrok. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Legendary Cars from the Past Undo Toronto Maple Leafs roster decisions could shape next move in Jack Roslovic free agency pursuit Toronto's forward depth chart is packed heading into 2025–26, with internal competition heating up. Jack Roslovic, coming off a $2.8 million deal, would require a cap-adjusted contract, but his skill set offers flexibility the Leafs could value, particularly with their need for reliable secondary scoring. Veterans like Kampf, who saw a diminished role last season, and Järnkrok, who struggled with injuries, appear to be logical trade candidates if Toronto wants to fit Roslovic under the cap. Whether GM Brad Treliving chooses to make a roster-shaping move may determine how serious the Leafs' pursuit ultimately is. As the NHL offseason enters its quietest stretch, Jack Roslovic remains a valuable option on the open market. With teams like Toronto still interested but limited by cap constraints, any potential signing will likely hinge on additional roster movement, setting up a possible late-summer shake-up. The latest decision by the franchise, led by superstar center Auston Matthews, confirms that Nick Robertson is staying put. Despite weeks of speculation surrounding potential trades, the team is doubling down on its belief in the 22-year-old forward. All 15 Nicholas Robertson Goals in the 2024/25 Season + Playoffs Nick Robertson remains in Toronto despite trade buzz around the NHL Nick Robertson, selected 53rd overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, recently inked a new contract with the Maple Leafs after nearly entering arbitration. While veterans like Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf are still on the books and rumored to be available, Toronto's front office has shown clear hesitation in parting ways with their younger assets, especially Robertson. The reason? It's all about potential and timing. While Robertson's NHL numbers haven't skyrocketed yet, 22 points in 69 games last season, his age and untapped ceiling make him an appealing piece for a franchise seeking longevity and speed. Compared to Kampf (29) and Jarnkrok (32), Robertson offers nearly a decade of extra time to develop and contribute at a high level. And even with limited ice time, he's shown flashes of skill and scoring instincts that suggest more is to come. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was The Dream Girl In The 1980s, Here She Is Now.
