Book of condolence opened after tragic death of late Garda Kevin Flatley

A book of condolence has been opened at local Garda stations in Sligo and Leitrim following the tragic death of Garda Kevin Flatley.
Garda Kevin Flatley, a 49-year-old father of two, was hit by a motorcycle as he recorded vehicles' speeds on the side of the road on the R132 at Lanestown in north Dublin on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and Gda Flatley was discovered with fatal injuries.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.
The driver of the Yamaha motorbike, aged in his 30s, was also seriously injured in the collision, and remains in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital.

Gda Flatley, from Balbriggan in Dublin, had served as a garda for 26 years and had been with the Roads Policing Unit since 2018.
Following his death, tributes have flooded in from all over the country.
People in Leitrim and Sligo are invited to express their sympathies to Gda Flatley's family, friends and colleagues as a book of condolence has been opened at local Garda Stations.
A spokesperson for gardaí in Sligo and Leitrim said, 'A Book of Condolence has been opened in Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Stations in loving memory of Garda Kevin Flatley, 27260D, who died in the line of duty on 11th May 2025.'

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Rory O'Brien said his client had come to Donegal from his native Dublin in a bid to kick his drug habit. On the day he was under the influence and Mr O'Brien said his client regrets all that happened. He added that when this happened he was on a "downward spiral" through alcohol and that he continues to need a significant amount of assistance for his addiction. Judge Eiteain Cunningham put it to Garda Sergeant Jim Collins that she presumed the station cell required a "deep clean" following the incident adding that this was simply "not acceptable behaviour." Judge Cunningham sentenced O'Neill to two months in prison for the criminal damage charge and took the other charges into consideration.

His death following what the PSNI are describing as 'an incident' has sent shockwaves throughout the local close-knit community The Louth man who died after sustaining serious injuries in an incident in south Armagh in the early hours of Saturday May 31 has been named as James O'Connor, late of 2 Euston Street, Greenore and formerly of Rampark, Jenkinstown, Dundalk. The 42 year-old builder was a member of a very well-known and highly respected family from the Cooley peninsula passed away on Wednesday June 4. His heartbroken family said it was 'with great sadness' that they announced his 'tragic and unexpected death.' He was predeceased by his father Jim in 2017 and his survived by partner Laura, his children James, Millie, and Lucy, his mother Phil, siblings Evanna, Ellen, and Tommy, aunts, uncles, and a large circle of relatives and friends.
