President Murmu in Rome to attend Pope Francis' funeral
President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Rome on Friday (April 25, 2025) to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
Francis, who was the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years, died on Monday. He was 88.
His funeral will be held on Saturday.
President Murmu is accompanied by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju; Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, George Kurian; and Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Joshua De Souza.
'President Droupadi Murmu arrives in Rome to attend the funeral Mass of His Holiness Pope Francis,' the President's office said in a post on X.
Ms. Murmu is on a two-day visit to the Vatican City and will offer condolences on behalf of the government and people of India.
'On April 26, the President will attend the funeral Mass of His Holiness Pope Francis at St Peter's Square in Vatican City, which will be attended by dignitaries from around the world,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said in a statement.
India had declared a three-day state mourning on the passing of Pope Francis.
Media reports quoted the Vatican as saying that about 130 delegations are confirmed for Francis' funeral. These include 50 heads of state and 10 reigning sovereigns.

'This is another example of the cynical use by Hamas, using civilians as human shields, using civilian infrastructure, hospitals, again and again,' Defrin said.

Union energy minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday refuted the recent claims by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding 'rigging' in the Maharashtra assembly elections, saying the public have already rejected them. "Instead, govt is blaming the railway employees for these accidents and taking punitive action against them," she added. The number of train accidents, which was 21 in 2020-21, increased to 34 in 2021-22, 48 in 2022-23, and 81 in 2024-25. The Railway Minister informed Parliament in 2022 that 469 passengers were killed and 1,275 injured in train accidents during 2014-19. "The trains running in suburban areas are experiencing accidents too. Hundreds of track maintainers died. More than 450 trackmen died in . Rail travel, an affordable mode of travel used by more than 2 crore people every day, must be made safe," Hemalatha demanded.
