3 things for Xabi Alonso to ponder at Real Madrid

Kuwait Times27-05-2025

MADRID: Xabi Alonso is returning to Real Madrid with the former midfielder taking over as coach from Carlo Ancelotti and leading the team at the upcoming Club World Cup. AFP Sport looks at three areas the 43-year-old Spaniard will have to think about in the weeks and months ahead as he tries to plot a course back towards major trophies, with Los Blancos ending this season empty-handed.
Restore the balance
Alonso's predecessor Ancelotti spent much of the last season complaining his team was unbalanced and also lacked 'collective commitment'. In short, the squad had too many attackers he felt he had to cram onto the field, while injuries left the defence in tatters and Madrid did not sign someone to replace midfielder Toni Kroos, who retired last summer.
French superstar Kylian Mbappe's arrival at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract in 2024 was the big change for a Madrid side that won a Champions League and La Liga double. For a while he and Vinicius Junior struggled to play together, occupying the same spaces, and even though Mbappe grew comfortable down the middle, netting 43 goals across all competitions, their dual presence cost Madrid defensively.
Alonso has to work out a way for the pair to work in tandem while still pressing effectively and making sure Madrid are not outnumbered when on the back foot. Veteran midfielder Luka Modric's departure after the Club World Cup means Alonso will be losing yet more poise, technique and wisdom from the midfield. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach has largely used a 3-4-3 formation which could suit Madrid's squad, particularly with the expected arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and a deal already done for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen.
Handle the superstars
If there was one particular task Ancelotti excelled at, it was keeping a dressing room full of big names and big egos happy. Ancelotti managed to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale in his first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu and then helped turn Vinicius into a superstar in his second.
The Italian coach would sometimes baulk at suggestions he was a good man manager but not a tactical mastermind, but it should not be underestimated how important it is to keep people onside at Madrid.
That includes president Florentino Perez, the star players, and even the media, all of whom Ancelotti handled supremely well. Alonso has an aura about him which could help in the same way it did for Zinedine Zidane, another former Madrid player who thrived at the helm.
Stopping rampant Barca
One of the nails in Ancelotti's coffin at Madrid was the way his team collapsed against their arch-rivals in all four Clasicos this season. Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win in La Liga in October to embarrass Madrid on home soil and lay down a marker of how the season was going to go. Their 4-3 victory in the return league match was what effectively dethroned Madrid and took the Spanish crown back to Catalonia—and the score could have been wider without being unfair to Los Blancos.
Barcelona also beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final and 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final as they completed a domestic treble and left Madrid reeling.
Ancelotti's side could not cope with Hansi Flick's high defensive line and relentless pressing, and Alonso will already be studying the German's set-up to make sure Madrid fare far better next season in the crunch clashes. — AFP

Brazil, Ecuador book World Cup berths, Uruguay on brink

Top six finishers in S America qualify automatically for the World Cup SAO PAULO: Brazil booked their place at the 2026 World Cup in North America on Tuesday with a lackluster 1-0 home victory over Paraguay, the first win of Carlo Ancelotti's reign. The five-time world champions punched their ticket to the finals in Canada, the United States and Mexico thanks to Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid star poked in from close range in the 44th minute in Sao Paulo after a cross from new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha. It was the perfect gift for the Italian Ancelotti on his 66th birthday, having seen his new side held 0-0 by Ecuador last week in his first game as coach. Former Real Madrid boss Ancelotti praised his team's 'commitment' and 'attitude'. 'It was a good match with a very good first half, although obviously we suffered a bit because Paraguay are very solid opponents and we slowed down a bit in the second,' he said. Uruguay's 2-0 win over Venezuela in Montevideo had raised the prospect of qualification for both Brazil and Paraguay at Corinthians Arena. Paraguay needed only a point to qualify while Brazil knew they could advance with a win. In the event it was Brazil who seized the opportunity presented by Venezuela's loss with Vinicius scoring the only goal just before half-time. Brazil had struggled to create many chances up until that point, with Cunha squandering a golden chance in the 35th minute after heading wide from point-blank range. Cunha made up for it with a key part in the goal, capitalizing on good work from Raphinha to dart into the box and whip in a low cross for Vinicius, who stabbed home the finish. The win lifted Brazil into third place in the South American standings with 25 points from 16 games, guaranteeing them a top-six finish and an automatic qualifying berth. Looking ahead to next summer, Ancelotti said he had 'a very long list' of 70 players in mind, including Neymar, who was missing with injury. He added: 'I really liked those who were with me in this squad for their commitment, their attitude, and the atmosphere.' The defeat left Paraguay with 24 points, meaning they need one point to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2010. Ecuador book place Surprise package Ecuador joined Brazil by sealing qualification with a point following a 0-0 draw with Peru in Lima. In other games, Uruguay edged closer to qualification with their win over Venezuela while Chile were eliminated with defeat to Bolivia. Goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta secured all three points for Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay to leave the two-time world champions firmly on course for a place in next year's finals. Like Paraguay, Uruguay need only a point from their final two games to qualify. Venezuela, who are bidding to reach the World Cup for the first time in the nation's history, are seventh with 18 points from 16 games. Argentina, who have already qualified, came from behind to frustrate Colombia with a 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires. Liverpool star Luis Diaz fired Colombia into the lead with a superb 24th minute goal, and the Colombians were given a further boost midway through the second half when the world champions were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez's dismissal. But Colombia's hopes of a vital win were dashed nine minutes from time when Thiago Almada weaved into the box and found the target to level. The top six finishers in South America qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed team advancing to an intercontinental playoff. Bolivia defeated Chile 2-0 to end the former South American champions' hopes of qualification. It is the third straight World Cup that Chile have missed out on. The loss continues a dramatic fall from grace for 'La Roja', who won back-to-back Copa Americas in 2015 and 2016. – AFP

What we see in Gaza hurts my whole body, says Guardiola

MANCHESTER: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaks at a ceremony where he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester. - Manchester City's X account MANCHESTER: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manchester on Monday and used his acceptance speech to address the war in Gaza. The war erupted after Hamas-led militants took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, in the October 7, 2023 attack. Israel's military campaign has since killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza. 'It's so painful what we see in Gaza. It hurts my whole body,' Guardiola said. 'It's not about ideology. It's not about whether I'm right, or you're wrong. It's just about the love of life, about the care of your neighbour. 'Maybe we think that we see the boys and girls of four years old being killed by the bomb or being killed at the hospital because it's not a hospital anymore. It's not our business. 'But be careful. The next four- or five-year-old kids will be ours. Sorry, but I see my kids, Maria, Marius and Valentina. When I see every morning since the nightmare started the infants in Gaza, and I'm so scared.' Guardiola was recognised for his contribution to the city, including guiding his team to six Premier League titles in nine years with the club, along with his charitable work through his Guardiola Sala Foundation. The 54-year-old Spaniard was presented with his honorary degree by the University's Chancellor Nazir Afzal at Whitworth Hall. – AFP

Tudor confirmed as Juve coach, Kolo Muani to stay

MILAN: Igor Tudor will be Juventus coach next season, the Serie A club's new general manager Damien Comolli confirmed on Tuesday, after failing to snatch Antonio Conte from Serie A champions Napoli. 'Igor Tudor will be our coach for the 2025/26 season. We're working together, and I want to reiterate that he will be our coach next season,' Comolli told reporters during a press conference. Juve had pushed to bring back club icon Conte, who won three straight league titles as coach of the Turin giants between 2011 and 2014. But Conte decided to stay at Napoli and defend the Scudetto, leading to Juve to decide to stick with Tudor who replaced sacked Thiago Motta in March and guided the club to next season's Champions League. Tudor will lead Juve at the upcoming Club World Cup in the USA where the Italians face Al Ain, Wydad AC and Manchester City in the group stage. Also taking part in the Club World Cup with Juve will be Comolli's fellow Frenchman Randal Kolo Muani, whose loan from Paris Saint-Germain has been extended for the length of the tournament. Comolli added that Juve were hoping to extend Kolo Muani's stay for next season after a promising spell in Italy since arriving in January from PSG where he was frozen out by Luis Enrique. 'We don't have an agreement with PSG but I'm optimistic,' said Comolli. Meanwhile, Manchester City on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of two former Liverpool coaches to Pep Guardiola's backroom staff, including Jurgen Klopp's ex-assistant Pepijn Lijnders. The Dutchman arrives at the Etihad Stadium alongside a new set-piece coach, James French, who has spent the past 13 years at Anfield. The appointments follow the departures of three members of Guardiola's backroom staff. Lijnders, 42, worked under Brendan Rodgers and Klopp at Liverpool. He left the club along with Klopp at the end of the 2023/24 season and took up the post of head coach at Red Bull Salzburg but was sacked in December. City director of football Hugo Viana said: 'Pepijn and James have each amassed huge experience working in their individual roles over the past few years. 'Their talent, application, work ethic and all-round commitment are totally aligned with the values that underpin how Pep wants football to be played.' Guardiola's team endured a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, finishing third in the Premier League and failing to win a trophy for the first time in eight years. They will travel to the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in the United States as defending champions after winning the competition under its previous guise in Saudi Arabia two years ago. The month-long tournament starts on June 14, with City opening their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia four days later. – AFP
