In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata petrol costs Rs 104.21 , Rs 100.85and Rs 103.94 respectively. India imports about 80% of its oil needs and so domestic pump rates are dependent on international prices, as denominated by Indian basket of crude oil. The other factors on which domestic petrol and diesel prices depend on include central excise duty, VAT or value added tax levied by state governments, dealer and refining margins and transportation cost. As of now, petrol and diesel don't come under the purview of GST. The value of the rupee also has a bearing on domestic fuel prices. A weak rupee increases the landed cost of dollar-denominated crude oil. Petrol and diesel prices in India are reviewed daily in line with the benchmark international rate of the preceding 15 days. So state-owned fuel retailers Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) are supposed to review petrol and diesel prices daily in line with the cost. Diesel is one of the primary sources of energy for transportation of goods in India. Any change in diesel prices has a direct impact on inflation. FAQs: Why do petrol prices change daily? India-Canada Ties On Revival Mode? PM Meets Mark Carney: 10 Points

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 meet in Alberta today. Their bilateral meet carries the hope of a reboot in ties since they deteriorated last year under Justin Trudeau. Here are the top 10 points from this big story: PM Modi is in Alberta on the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney. India is not a member of G7, but attends the meetings. The invite is seen to have signalled Canada's intent to get ties with India and the ongoing partnerships in multiple arenas back on track. Ottawa's relationship with New Delhi had dropped to an all-time low last year, following the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. This is PM Modi's first visit to Canada since. Then Prime Minister Trudeau had pointed fingers at New Delhi, alleging the involvement of Indian agents in the murder. New Delhi had refuted the allegations and accused Justin Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistan groups to operate from Canadian soil. In October. Last year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats and expelled an equal number of representatives from Canada. Mr Carney, an economist who joined politics recently, succeeded Justin Trudeau in the top job in April. Last week, Mr Carney said India's position as the fifth largest economy and its billion-plus population warranted the invite. "As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains," he had told reporters. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit," PM Modi had said before leaving for the three-nation tour. The G-7 summit comes amid an escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. In a statement, the G7 nations have expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself and condemned Iran.

Donald Trump Says Pharma Tariffs 'Coming Soon'; Indian Drug Stocks Fall Up To 4%

Last Updated: US Pharma Tariffs: Granules India becomes the top loser falling up to 4%, while Aurobindo, Natco and Lupic was down 3% each. US President Donald Trump on June 17 said tariffs on the pharmaceutical sector are 'coming soon". Following comments, which Trump made while speaking to reporters on board the Air Force One, India's pharma stocks declined up to 4%. The Nifty Pharma index declined as much as 2.5% following the Trump comments. Granules India became the top loser falling up to 4%, while Aurobindo, Natco and Lupic was down 3% each. This isn't the first warning — back in April, after imposing reciprocal tariffs on 60 countries (excluding pharma at the time), Trump had hinted that pharma tariffs would come in at 'never seen before" levels and were under active review. 'Pharma tariffs are going to come in at levels you haven't really seen before. We are looking at pharmaceuticals as a separate category. We will be announcing that sometime in the near future, and not too distant future. It's under review right now," Trump had said back in April. The US Commerce Department is currently investigating pharma imports under Section 232, which evaluates the impact of imports on national security. If such tariffs are imposed and companies are unable to pass on the cost, analysts at Citi estimate Indian firms with high exposure to the US generics market could see a 9%-12% one-time hit to their Ebitda.
