George Mason sets NCAA Division I record for most runs scored in inning
The Holy Cross Crusaders baseball team got a crash course into the old saying, "when it rains, it pours," on Tuesday in a game against the George Mason Patriots.
George Mason broke a 42-year-oold NCAA Division I record when the team scored 23 runs in the second inning of their 26-6 win over Holy Cross. The Patriots sent 28 batters to the plate in the inning and 19 batters after Holy Cross got the first out of the inning.
It was two more runs than the previous D-1 record, which was set by the Penn Quakers in 1983 and matched by the Wichita State Shockers in 1984 and the Valparaiso Crusaders in 2010.
Holy Cross used five pitchers in the inning, with two of them failing to record an out. George Mason freshman catcher Andrew Raymond doubled, walked and recorded three RBI in the inning.
The school noted that the team record for most runs in a game is 36. The Patriots, ironically, set the record against Holy Cross in March 1996.
Holy Cross got three runs back in the fourth inning and scored three more runs between the sixth and the seventh innings before the game ended.
The Patriots moved to 8-4 with the win and the Crusaders fell to 5-5.

The Patriots are aware of the video, and the team is reportedly deciding on how to address it with Diggs. 'It's something that we're aware of, and obviously we want to make great decisions on and off the field,' Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters. 'The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions. And any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him and I and the club.' Diggs, a two-time All-Pro selection who signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots in March, hasn't been present at Patriots OTAs, and his future with the team is now in question according to a recent report from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. Advertisement 'I sort of think all things are on the table,' Breer said in a radio interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub. 'And I think it's really, to me at least, it's going to boil down to what [Stefon] told Vrabel and how believable it was, because I think it's going to be hard for anybody — the league's going to look into this and they're going to hit a dead end because they're not going to be able to prove what was in the bag. So, then it's up to the team to make a decision.' Diggs' deal, which included a $12 million signing bonus, comes with $25 million guaranteed. Breer noted if New England has any chance of getting some of that money back for essentially firing Diggs for cause, they have to move swiftly. 'So, my guess would be the reason he wasn't at practice—and this is purely a guess—might be because [Vrabel] told him to stay away and maybe they're sorting through everything now.' Advertisement Breer also noted that Diggs' behavior is exactly what Vrabel is trying to discourage with the culture shift he's trying to instill in his first year as Patriots head coach. 'This sort of thing can undermine all of that,' Breer added. 'If [Diggs] falls on the sword and does everything right, then fine, but, if [Vrabel] thinks he is lying to him I just wouldn't doubt Mike having the stomach to cut him.' WEST LAFAYETTE − Kymistrii Young had a long list of suitors. After a visit with Purdue football over the weekend, Young chose the Boilermakers, he announced on Instagram. The three-star receiver had 24 Division I offers, according to 247, among them 16 from schools in Power Four conferences. Young becomes Purdue's eighth verbal commitment in the 2026 class. Listed at 6 foot 3 and 185 pounds, Young caught 25 passes for 626 yards and 10 touchdowns at Sarasota Florida's Cardinal Mooney High as a junior, according to MaxPreps. He ran April 11 a career-best 21.99 200-meter during the Sarasota County Championships. Here's how his commitment impacts the Boilermakers. Among Purdue's eight 2026 verbal commitments, seven are offensive players and Young is the fourth skill player, joining quarterback Corin Berry, running back Izaiah Wright and tight end ArMari Towns. If Young ends up signing with Purdue, it will be a big win to get a skill player who had offers from the likes of Penn State, Miami and Louisville among many others. Receiver has been a priority in the transfer portal with the additions of Michael Jackson III, Nitro Tuggle, Corey Smith and David Washington all since the spring season concluded. Barry Odom's December signing class also included five transfer receivers, though Nathan Leacock entered the transfer portal after the spring window opened. Receivers Jackson, Chauncey Magwood, EJ Horton Jr. and Charles Ross all are entering their final season of eligibility, but Purdue's roster could include current scholarship receivers Jesse Watson, De'Nylon Morrissette and Arhmad Branch in addition to Tuggle, Smith and Washington for the 2026 season.
