‘No-ball, 3 missed chances stood between you and nau wickets': Sachin Tendulkar lauds Jasprit Bumrah; subtly points out India's fielding woes

Indian Express5 hours ago

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar praised Jasprit Bumrah for taking a fifer against England at Leeds on Sunday while also subtly pointing out India's missed chances on the field. While Bumrah's fifer helped India bowl out England for 465, the score might have been even less had India taken all their catching chances on the field.
Off Bumrah's bowling alone, India dropped 4 catches, three by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook getting reprieve twice, once on 46 and then on 82. The England batter would fail to reach three figures, getting caught by Shardul Thakur off Prasidh Krishna on 99, but he had already done enough damage to India by the time he walked back.
'Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets,' Tendulkar posted on X.

By taking the five-fer at Leeds, Bumrah drew level with the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian players with the joint-most five wicket hauls in away Tests.
Bumrah has taken 12 fifers, the same as Dev but did it in 34 Test matches as compared to 66 matches by the former India World Cup winning captain. They are followed by Ishant Sharma who has taken 9 fifers in 63 matches, Zaheer Khan who has 8 in 54 matches and Irafan Pathan who has 7 in 15 matches.
Bumrah accounted for the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue as India bundled out England for 465, still maintaining a lead of 6 runs.
Before Bumrah castled Josh Tongue to end England innings, Chris Woakes (38 off 55) punished a predictable Indian pace attack to take his team close to India's 471. England's tail virtually cancelled out the Indian first innings with the match now hinged on third and fourth innings respectively.
Hosts continued to find the boundaries at will as they collected 138 runs in 23.4 overs in the afternoon session with the loss of five wickets.
Prasidh removed Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Brook with the short ball but leaked too many runs at the same time with his one dimensional tactic, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs.

FIH Pro League: Indian men's team ends Pro League campaign with 4-3 win against Belgium

The Indian men's hockey team showed character as they snatched a 4-3 win against hosts Belgium to end an otherwise forgettable campaign at the FIH Hockey Pro League on a positive note on Sunday (June 22, 2025). It was goals by Sukhjeet Singh (21', 35'), Amit Rohidas (36') and Harmanpreet Singh (59') that ensured India's win, and ended their outing in the eighth place, 14 points ahead of Ireland. For Belgium, Arthur de Sloover (8'), Thibeau Stockbroekx (34') and Hugo Labouchere (41') scored. It was a memorable outing for Sukhjeet and Dilpreet Singh who completed their 100 international caps. Belgium were quick to get off the blocks, pressing high and looking to catch Indian defenders off guard. Their tactics paid off early with Arthur de Sloover scoring a stunning goal to go one up in the match. He fired it into the top right corner of the post, leaving no room for the Indian goalie to defend. The goal certainly dislodged India's momentum, who until then showed glimpses of attacking intent with quick bursts in their variation. The visitors' first real opportunity came in the 20th minute when they earned the first penalty corner of the match and with skipper Harmanpreet back on the pitch, confidence was high in the Indian set-up. It was a good injection from Hardik, but the powerful flick was well-blocked, leading to a brisk counterattack by the Belgians. But Pathak, at the other end, prevented a potential 2-0 lead with a fine save. Only a minute later, India converted a sensational penalty corner and this time it was a clever variation which saw Sukhjeet step up and deflect the ball inside the post with precision. He only had to angle Harmanpreet's flick, which comfortably beat the Belgian goalie. This was an important equaliser which saw India build on their attack. Nearing the end of the second quarter, Abhishek came close to scoring what would have been a stupendous goal but missed the target by inches. After the 10-minute half-time break, Belgium struck early through Thibeau Stockbroekx, who scored in the 34th minute. But India responded almost immediately with Sukhjeet pumping his second goal of the match. It was an assist from the midfield, to Abhishek just a little outside the top of the D. Though Abhishek missed holding on to the ball, Sukhjeet picked it up efficiently to smash it into the goalpost. A minute later, Rohidas put India ahead 3-2 when he scored from a PC in the 36th minute. There was plenty of drama in the game. Belgium earned a PC and made complete use of the opportunity. This time, it was Hugo Labouchere putting his name on the scoresheet with his maiden international goal. Seconds later, India found the back of the net after a bit of a scramble inside the D to hold on to the ball. It was eventually Shamsher Singh who put the ball inside the net after a couple of attempts.. However, an immediate video referral by Belgium saw the goal being disallowed. Going into the final quarter in this high-octane contest, India started with a PC. With minutes left for the final hooter, an important video referral by India saw them being awarded a penalty stroke. Though Sloover protested and eventually was handed a yellow card, there was a clear push from him, and Harmanpreet sealed the issue in his team's favour to end a run of seven successive losses in the European leg of the league. 'We made a good comeback today. We had the confidence in us in every game we played. There was a lot of room for improvement in how we played today; we narrowed down on the small errors we were making and rectified them have been lots of learnings from here and we will bounce back next edition,' said Sukhjeet, who was awarded the Player of the Match.

ENG vs IND 1st Test: I try to forget quickly, says Bumrah on Indian dropped catches

In a parallel world, Jasprit Bumrah could have had more than the five wickets he ended up with in England's first innings here, and that too in double quick time. But a disastrous fielding display by his teammates – they dropped three catches off his bowling – and some rotten luck – he dismissed Harry Brook off a no-ball when on nought – ensured India was on the field for far longer than desired. But Bumrah was empathetic towards his fielders. 'You have to move forward,' he said on Sunday. 'I try to quickly forget. They [fielders] are also new [to England] and sometimes the ball is tough to sight. I don't want to be angry and kicking and putting more pressure.' ALSO READ | Bumrah fifer and Rahul's steady 47 helps India take 96-run lead at end of Day 3 Bumrah also stated that the wicket was still good to bat. 'There is a little bit of two-pace and the new ball might swing. But no demons. It's a fast scoring ground. So the more runs we get, the better.' By his own admission, the 31-year-old is not looking to play more than three Tests this series for better management of his workload. But the potential limited participation doesn't affect his thinking and preparation, he said. 'You don't look at what is going to happen. At this moment, I am trying to assess the wicket, and the batter. I am not thinking about how many games I am going to play.' The constant chatter about his career ending because of injuries also doesn't bother him. 'It was once said that I can't play cricket at all. Then it became six months, eight months. But it's been more than 10 years now in internationals and 12 to 13 years of IPL. Still people are saying 'I will go'. People can keep saying, but I am going nowhere. I will keep playing until god allows me to and try taking Indian cricket forward.'
