Veteran Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg named a crafty Real Madrid legend as his favourite defender of all time on the latest episode of Whistleblowers.
Whistleblowers is football's most original new podcast, hosted by Mark Clattenburg alongside Mail Sport Football Editor Ian Ladyman and broadcaster Gordon Smart.
Debating which centre back was the greatest of all time, Clattenburg championed 'nasty' Portuguese defender Pepe.
Over his 229 appearances for Real Madrid, Pepe won 15 major trophies but developed a notorious reputation with officials for his feisty tackling and behaviour.
'The best centre half I ever saw, even though he could be quite nasty, was Pepe,' the former official revealed.
'I watched him at Euro 2024, the last international tournament he played in, and he was incredible for his age at 41.
'What I liked about him was that he was an incredible pro – he achieved an awful lot. It was like the ball was glued to him, every ball that went in, he was at the other end of.

'As a referee, I had run-ins with him. In the Champions League final in particular – but he was just an incredible centre half.'
Pepe returned from a thigh injury to deliver a man-of-the-match performance in Portugal's Euro 2016 final victory over France, a match Clattenburg refereed.
Clattenburg also officiated the defender during Real Madrid's 2016 Champions League final victory over Atlético Madrid.
He controversially awarded a dubious penalty against Pepe for a tackle on former Liverpool forward Fernando Torres – which Atlético scored to level the match.
When asked who he would pair with Pepe for the ultimate defensive partnership, Clattenburg suggested Vincent Kompany, arguing that the Belgian's ball-playing ability would complement the Portuguese defender's tenacity.
'I would want a shot stopper and a ball player', Clattenburg explained.
'I like Vincent Kompany alongside Pepe. Kompany had a great attitude, very different to Pepe.'
While Clattenburg favoured more recent defenders, co-host Ian Ladyman delved further back in football history for his best defender, naming Liverpool stalwart Alan Hansen.
Hansen won eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, and four League Cups during his decade-plus spell at Liverpool, establishing himself as one of the most decorated centre-backs in English football history.
Ladyman explained: 'You can't look past Alan Hansen. Literally, you couldn't get past him.
'What a footballer: wonderful reader of the game. He was brave, athletic, probably could have played in about seven positions.
'A great passer of the ball, a leader. He would always look pristine after a game because he would never have to go to ground – he was that good.'
Alongside Hansen, Ladyman named a controversial Liverpool-Manchester United defensive pairing, choosing Nemanja Vidić for his physicality.
Ladyman argued: 'If you have a stylish distributor of the ball, you need someone next to him who can scare the life out of people.
'I would go with Vidic – he could head the ball; he was a monster in the tackle.'

'Valuable' or 'time to move on'

We asked for your views on Ilkay Gundogan's future, after the 34-year-old revealed that he is "happy" to remain at Manchester City next season despite links to Super Lig club are some of your comments:Tom: As much as I do love Gundo, now is the right time to refresh the squad and build on it for Pep 2.0. Gundo has done amazing things for the club but, for him and Bernardo Silva, it is the time to move on and let this new squad do the Fresh blood is very important to the team, but veteran players are of considerable value as well. The risk is long-term injuries, so if they can stay fit and motivated then they will be an Gundo will stay. He is still an amazing player and a leader. Pep knows that he will support the younger He is valuable to City in every respect. Keep him, coach him, give him other responsibilities within the football and diplomacy part of the With Bernardo Silva staying and being named as captain, the new signings coming in, the return of Rodri and Bobb and the emergence of O'Reilly, it doesn't seem necessary to keep Gundogan around. There is already so much young talent which will grow together and solidify as a cohesive unit for several years to As of today, the squad is huge and a bit embarrassing. Including a third goalkeeper, I have counted 31 players in the squad. If Gundo and Silva stay, who is leaving and who isn't in the 25-player Premier League squad?

Gareth Bale interested in buying hometown club Cardiff City

Former Wales captain Gareth Bale has confirmed he is interested in being part of a bid to buy his hometown club, Cardiff City. Bale told Sky Sports that to be involved with an ownership group would be "a dream come true". The 35-year-old, who is from Cardiff, started his career at Southampton before joining Tottenham Hotspur and, later, Real Madrid. He spent his last season before retirement at Los Angeles FC. For Wales, he scored 41 goals and made 111 appearances for his country between 2006 and 2022, and helped the men's side qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years. The consortium is looking to buy a controlling interest in the Bluebirds. But an initial enquiry earlier this month was rejected by the club's long-term owner, Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan. Bale was recently linked with a group reportedly involved in a failed takeover bid at Plymouth, who, like Cardiff, were relegated from the Championship at the end of the season. At the premiere of F1: The Movie, Bale told Sky Sports the group was "interested in getting Cardiff". "[Cardiff] is a club close to my heart. It's where I grew up and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs," he added. "I know how amazing the Welsh fans and Cardiff fans are. It would be amazing to try and do something together. "We are trying to engage with Cardiff, and more news will come out on that in the future, but hopefully we can get something done." Bale's potential involvement comes after another Welsh side recently saw investment from his former teammate, Real Madrid star Luka Modric. Swansea have not disclosed how much the 39-year-old Croatia captain had invested, but the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner said it was an "exciting opportunity" to get involved with the club.
