'A Calamitous Failure': Social Media Reacts In Fury As HS2 Is Delayed Yet Again

Yahoo8 hours ago

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander has confirmed that HS2 has been delayed yet again – and the reaction on social media was predictably withering.
She told MPs there is 'no route' to meet the target date of having it up and running by 2033, and refused to say when it might be.
'It's an appalling mess, but it's one we will sort out,' Alexander said.
'We need to set targets which we can confidently deliver, that the public can trust, and that will take time. But rest assured, where there are inefficiencies, we will root them out.'
HS2 was originally due to run between London and Birmingham, then on to Manchester and Leeds, but the project was severely curtailed by the previous Conservative government because of spiralling costs.
In 2013, it was estimated to cost £37.5 billion for the entire project, including the now-scrapped extensions from Birmingham.
But in June last year, the cost of building the line between London and Birmingham would be up to £66 billion.
Alexander said: 'This government will get the job done between Birmingham and London.
'We won't reinstate cancelled sections we can't afford, but we will do the hard but necessary work to rebuild public trust.'
On X, the news was greeted with predictable anger.
A calamitous failure of the British state.. of scrutiny, accountability, responsibility and political will… and not by any means an isolated example. https://t.co/SVnBXLEZ22

I always take hs2 as one of the most prominent examples of how fucked we are as a country. 16 years at least now for a single rail line. China would knock it out in an afternoon. Embarrassing. https://t.co/JDOBCox0GM

HS2 will end up as the defining joke of the 21st century. It was a ridiculous concept from the start, made only more ridiculous by the advent of modern technology which has already made it an unnecessary waste of time and money...https://t.co/W9zL9dGaol

What an absolute farce & waste of billions of pounds. Stop HS2 now, it's not too late. @UKLabour@Conservatives@reformparty_ukpic.twitter.com/vtpawkSOQf

Trump installs pair of 88-foot-tall new flag poles at the White House

Trump installs pair of 88-foot-tall new flag poles at the White House President Donald Trump said the flags were a gift from him. Show Caption Hide Caption Donald Trump installs Diet Coke button in Oval Office From Diet Coke buttons to portraits of Andrew Jackson, here's a look inside Donald Trump's Oval Office decor. WASHINGTON ― Massive new flag poles have been installed on the White House grounds after President Donald Trump said they were desperately needed and he would pay for them himself. The placement of the two 88-foot-tall flagpoles — one on the north lawn and one on the south lawn — began early in the morning of June 18. A U.S. flag was later raised on the south lawn around 1 p.m. at a ceremony that included Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner. The couple was at the White House to watch the swearing in of Charles Kushner, Jared's father, as U.S. ambassador to France. 'How do you like it, everybody?' Trump said to reporters after the flag reached the top of the pole. Soon afterward, the second flag pole of identical height was installed on the North Lawn. The second flag has not been raised, however, after thunderstorms with lightning rolled into Washington D.C. Presidents have long put their own mark on how the White House is decorated, and Trump, who built his personal brand flipping commercial properties, is no exception. "It is a GIFT from me of something which was always missing from this magnificent place," Trump said in a social media post. "Hopefully, they will proudly stand at both sides of the White House for many years to come!" Trump said he paid out of his own pocket to install the poles, which cost about $50,000 each. Trump: 'Now I'm the hunter' This week, the White House traded a bust sitting in the Oval Office of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. for one of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Trump said earlier this year he'd like to see a new ballroom built in the White House. When asked what gave him the idea to install the flag poles, Trump said he first considered the flags during his first term but blamed distractions caused by the media for getting in the way. 'I was the hunted. And now I'm the hunter,' Trump told reporters on June 18. "It's a big difference." Contributing: Swapna Venugopal Ramaswamy.

Unpacking rumor Iranian state TV said, 'Tonight, a great surprise will occur, one that the world will remember for centuries'

A rumor that circulated online in mid-June 2025 claimed Iranian state TV announced, "Tonight, a great surprise will occur, one that the world will remember for centuries." For example, on June 17, an X user posted (archived), "BREAKING: Iranian State TV has said: 'Tonight, a great surprise will occur, one that the world will remember for centuries.'" The post received 12.4 million views, as of this writing. (@unusual_whales/X) Numerous other users also shared this claim, including on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), Reddit (archived), TikTok (archived), X (archived) and YouTube (archived). Newsweek, The Gateway Pundit and the Arabic-language website Asharq News (archived), as well as the British tabloids The Daily Mail and The Mirror, reported this news as fact as well. However, searches of the wire services Agence France-Presse, The Associated Press and Reuters found no reports about this matter. Had Iranian state TV made such an announcement, news media outlets worldwide would have reported it as major breaking news. Very few outlets reported the alleged quote, and those that did provided no video or other evidence to support their claims. This rumor possibly originated from an X post appearing on the account Tehran Updates (@TehranDefence) in the U.S. morning hours of June 17. The account displays a bio reading: "Live War updates / This account is not affiliated with any Government entity." According to a search of X, the post featured the earliest record of the text, "Tonight there will be a big surprise and the world will remember it for centuries." The existence of this X post indicated the rumor Iranian state TV made the announcement was likely false. However, Snopes did not attach a fact-check rating to this story because we have not definitively established the truth about this matter. (@TehranDefence/X) Snopes contacted Iran's ministry of foreign affairs by email to ask whether Iranian state TV made the alleged announcement, and will update this story if we learn more information. Users shared this matter amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Iran and Israel attacking each other with missile strikes. On June 18, the AP reported Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rejected U.S. calls for surrender, and warned any U.S. military involvement would cause "irreparable damage" to them. The AP also said an Israeli airstrike hit an Iranian state TV studio during a live broadcast. The reporting features a video of the moment of impact. For further reading on the subject of state TV broadcasts, another fact check examined the true claim that Russian state TV aired n*de photos of U.S. first lady Melania Trump shortly after the 2024 election. Chatham County Commissioner Pat Farrell launches bid for U.S. House as "reliable conservative"

Chatham County Commissioner Pat Farrell formally launched his bid for Coastal Georgia's U.S. House seat Tuesday evening, branding himself as a "strong, reliable conservative." Farrell made his announcement to a group of over 50 people at the Forest City Gun Club and pledged to continue current District 1 Rep. Buddy Carter's work in Congress, while also saying President Donald Trump needs more "pro-MAGA conservatives" in Congress. "I will be the conservative voice in a crazy world that needs more conservatives to speak up about family values and what is important to us, the American dream," Farrell said. Background: Six-term Congressman Buddy Carter announces bid for Senate seat opposing Ossoff Coastal Georgia's U.S. House seat is up for grabs after Carter announced a bid for U.S. Senate in May, vying for sitting Sen. Jon Ossoff's seat. Carter has frequently aligned with Trump during his five terms in the U.S. House. Since Carter's campaign announcement there has been no rush of Republicans entering the field in a reliably red district. Bryan County Chairman Carter Infinger said he is considering a run for the seat, and Kandiss Taylor of Baxley, Ga. has formally entered the race. Farrell said he had been considering a run for some time, knowing Carter may eventually run for higher office. The open seat marked an opportune time to jump in the race, Farrell said. Tuesday's event came after Farrell first signaled his run at a One Tybee event in May, according to reporting by The Current. "I think I have the right experience and the right background, and all the different synergies are coming together that this is a good time for me to run for higher office." Potential candidate: Carter Infinger working with consultants to devise plan for Congress election run Policies mentioned by Farrell Tuesday included cutting income taxes and amending the constitution to require congress pass a balanced budget. A campaign brochure provided to attendees also states Farrell supports eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and supports Department of Government Efficiency efforts to "make the federal government more efficient." Farrell also said he is "strongly pro-life" and pro-second amendment, while touting his more than 20 years of local government experience. "I've been reliable in these roles, and I'm a conservative like each of you here tonight," he said. During his introduction, State Rep. Jesse Petrea pointed to Farrell's background as a Coastal Georgia native and business owner as strengths. Farrell also leaned into those attributes, mentioning his 13-year row crop business, Farrell Farms. Farrell is also a graduate of Benedictine Military School. Farrell touted that background as his being the candidate who has "fulfilled the American dream." "Small business is the backbone of this country. We've got that here," Petrea said. Farrell affirmed a commitment to "win this campaign, not just run," along with making a personal commitment to ensure the campaign has the resources and funding. He registered a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission in May, but no fundraising data is yet available. The next quarterly reporting deadline for congressional candidates is July 15. "We are going to have the money to run a top tier campaign, and I hope and believe that I can count on my friends that I've worked with for 60 years in this community," Farrell said.
