YSU's annual Puppy Palooza brings much-needed stress relief ahead of finals
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Every student needs to take a break from studying. Youngstown State brought in some furry friends to help them.
It's Relaxation Week on campus before finals begin.
On Thursday, there were 16 dogs at the Recreation and Wellness Center for students to mingle with and show some love, while taking their minds off of studying.
Called 'Puppy Palooza,' the event is done twice a year to help reduce the students' stress.
'It's something that we don't necessarily think about. I feel like relaxation, we think of more…the fitness and wellness realm, like yoga or meditation. But playing with dogs, you're not realizing you turned your brain off, and you get to just play and enjoy the time with them,' said Dina Fabry, assistant director of fitness, wellness and special events.
The puppies were provided by New Lease on Life in Struthers. Students could donate money and dog food to help the shelter.

‘Serving those who served': VA clinic presents ‘VetFest'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – An event for and all about local veterans is making its debut this coming weekend. Man pleads guilty in hit-and-run that injured teen in front of East High School VetFest 2025 is being held at the Carl Nunziato Youngstown VA Clinic on Belmont Avenue on Saturday. The event is an opportunity to introduce veterans to the clinic and its services. 'It's an opportunity for us to celebrate local veterans. What we want to do is we want to have veterans that currently are enrolled here at the facility, or veterans that have not yet enrolled in the facility, come out and see what we're about,' said Carl Schneider, who serves as the facility director at the Carl Nunziato Youngstown VA Clinic. 'Check out the services that we might have available that they're not aware of, or get them veterans that don't know about VA health care information, so they can get enrolled.' At VetFest 2025, veterans can learn about the many services offered by the clinic and ask as many questions as they want about what the clinic offers. Veterans who are not enrolled can even enroll with the clinic that day at the event. 'It starts with primary care. That's kind of the entry point to receiving care at the VA clinic. Once they get enrolled, there's so many we have so many services that veterans aren't aware of,' said Schneider. 'We have mental health, we have podiatry, optometry, we have a lab here, we have physical therapy. We're adding additional services with specialty care, so we continue to expand the services to accommodate veterans here locally.' VetFest 2025 is not just for veterans, but also for their families and kids. 'We want to make this a very fun event for families. We want to provide information. We want to connect veterans with local resources that they might not be aware of,' said Schneider. 'We're hoping the weather cooperates and we can have it outside. We're going to have it at the entrance of the clinic, and there's going to be tables. We're going to have activities for kids. We're going to have a live band here. We're going to serve food. It's going to be a great time. It's going to be a fun time for family, for kids, for everybody.' The Carl Nunziato Youngstown VA Clinic opened in 2021 and continues to expand its offerings and services for veterans. 'We're looking to add an infusion clinic within the next year. That's going to be a big service. A lot of times, veterans are traveling to receive some of these services, and so this is something they felt was necessary to support this area,' said Schneider. 'We've recently added dermatology, so we're expanding our specialty care here so veterans do not have to travel far to receive the care that they deserve and need.' The event will also feature several community partners, such as the Veterans Service Commission and Youngstown State University. The clinic has also partnered with a local food bank for a food giveaway. 'This is just an opportunity for us to give back, to show our appreciation to the veterans, to the heroes that have made sacrifices. This connects them to the community, and that's what we're about,' said Schneider. 'Engaging the veterans, showing that Youngstown absolutely cares about their veterans. Serving those who served is what it's about, and we're very proud of this clinic and what we do and what we offer here.' Trumbull County Fair going bigger and better
BAZETTA, Ohio (WKBN) – A local fair is getting ready to kick off its 179th year in a big way. Read next: Bear spotted in Trumbull County The Trumbull County Fair is right around the corner, and there are a lot of new things happening this year. 'Our biggest change this year is going to be the 4-H replacement building down in the horse area. The kids are getting new bathrooms, showers, meeting rooms, room to oversee the horse area for the judges to be up and over the ring,' said Trumbull County Fair Board Director and Secretary Kierstin Holmes. 'We've got two demo derbies going on this year in the grandstand, Wednesday night and Sunday night, and there is added money if you do participate in both demo derbies.' And don't be surprised if you see an actual dinosaur roaming the midway this year. 'For our daily shows, there is Crackerjack the Clown with the Family Fun Circus, and we are getting ready for Jurassic Park Kickoff,' said Holmes. 'We have the Stone Age show with live dinosaurs, acrobatics, and juggling. They have animatronic dinosaurs and puppets.' The fair also updated its domestic arts program. 'We've totally redone the domestic arts building,' said Holmes. 'There's a whole wall of quilts that were painted. This year, we're actually offering free entries for anybody in the domestic arts and the culinary arts.' You'll also be able to enjoy remote-controlled cars. 'We have an RC course this year that is going to be down by the Junior Fair office. They will be doing demonstrations with RC cars and might possibly have some to rent for people that want to try them,' said Holmes. 'We also have a new petting zoo this year, so that will be set up on the midway along with the pony rides.' You can also give back by donating food while helping the Junior Fair at the same time. 'This year, Junior Fair will be participating in Stock the Trailer. This is with Farm Credit Mid-America, and they partner with junior fairs across the state,' said Holmes. 'We'll have a trailer set up down in the Junior Fair area to take donations of nonperishable food items. The Junior Fair that gets the most weight at the end of their fair season will win a $5,000 prize, and that goes directly back into the Junior Fair program.' Attendees will also get to vote on their favorite barrel painted by a local school for the Trumbull County Fair's barrel contest. 'We bring empty barrels to local school districts. Their art department paints the barrels. We do first, second, and third place and a People's Choice award. They all get a plaque at the end, and they are presented before the rodeo on Saturday night during the fair,' said Holmes. 'All our flowerbeds around the fair are sponsored by different local businesses, and we do a favorite flower bed contest also. They're based on our theme this year, which is Welcome to the Jungle.' Of course, there will also be everything people have come to love and expect this year at the fair. 'As always, we've got our Junior Fair shows going on. Animal shows, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, poultry, rabbits, cats, you name it. Horses, lizards and snakes. There's even going to be a crocodile this year for the reptile show,' said Holmes. 'We have open show, open class animal shows as well. The Flower Barn has gotten a makeover this year. As always, on our bicentennial and historical stages, we have local bands that will be playing. Grandstand starts Tuesday. The first day of the fair starts with harness racing at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday is our first demo derby. That'll be at 7. Thursday is our Rough Truck show that starts at 7 p.m. Friday is the Bud Rogers Memorial truck and tractor pull. Saturday is the high steel rodeo that starts at 6 p.m., and then Sunday finishes off with our large demo derby and the fireworks and the fair around 10 p.m.' The Trumbull County Fair runs from Tuesday, July 8, through Sunday, July 13. Gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Tickets on Tuesday are $3, with rides costing extra that day. Wednesday through Sunday, tickets are $14, and the ride pass is $10. Seniors cost $5, and on Wednesday, first responders and military get in free. The fair is located at 899 Everett Hull Road in Bazetta. Scrappers' opening night at Eastwood Field is here again for 27th season
NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Wednesday is opening night at Eastwood Field — the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are back in action and no one is more excited than Scrappy himself. The first pitch against State College is at 7:05 p.m. but get there early for a live pregame performance by The Suns of Beaches band. The first 1,000 adults will get a free Hawaiian shirt. It's also Military Appreciation Night — get two free upper box seat tickets with a valid military ID at the box office. After the game, there will be fireworks. Tuesday night was Scrapper Fest at the Eastwood Mall — a time to get fans excited for the 27th season. Former Major Leaguer and second-year manager Quinton McCracken addressed the crowd, outlining the kind of team he'll be leading. 'We're doubling down but as far as excitement pertaining to this year's team, I mean, we've got a lot of good athletes, we got a lot of live bodies, strong kids that are looking to go out and make a name for themselves,' he said.
