Lauren Bell opens up on competition for places under new head coach Charlotte Edwards as England bid to step up a level against India
Fast bowler Lauren Bell has insisted that 'no one is coasting any more' as England prepare for their biggest showdown of the summer against India.
The new management team of head coach Charlotte Edwards and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt have already presided over six white-ball wins out of six over West Indies, five of them by crushing margins. Now, they must move up a level against the Indians, with the first of five T20s starting at Trent Bridge on Saturday, followed by three ODIs.
'It's been a great start,' said the 24-year-old Bell, who has 98 wickets for England across the three formats since her debut three years ago, and has ambitions of being the best fast bowler in the world.
'Charlotte has this real winning mentality, and she's come in and set these really clear goals for how we want to go about our cricket. We're able to review a game quite objectively, rather than going off emotions.'
But Edwards, the former World Cup-winning captain who assumed the role when Jon Lewis was sacked in March following the Ashes debacle over the winter, has also been willing to ring the changes, giving 30-year-old left-arm spinner Linsey Smith a run in the side after world No 1 Sophie Ecclestone announced she was taking a break from the domestic game with Lancashire to prioritise her 'well-being' and manage a sore thigh.
'You want to put performances in because you want to get picked,' said Bell. 'No one's coasting anymore. No one is guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Some of the things Lottie has implemented will hopefully have a knock-on effect with how we deal with real pressure situations.'
For all the success enjoyed by the new regime against West Indies, England still need a strong performance against more potent opposition if they are to shake off the criticism that followed them all round Australia.
Above all, they were dogged by comments from former team-mate Alex Hartley about their lack of fitness, with Lewis eventually arguing that Australia's outdoor culture gave them an inherent advantage over their English counterparts.
Bell, though, believes the matter became overblown. 'Everyone can have their opinion, and it was massively what people were talking about, but it didn't feel exactly why we were losing games of cricket,' she said.
'As a team, we work super hard, and fitness-wise we're in a good place. Lottie has come in and set these minimum standards, which is good, but it shouldn't affect the majority of the team. There are many other factors to why we struggled in Australia.'
Saturday's first T20 is part of a big summer in which all three of England's main teams – the women, the men and the mixed disability side – are in action against India.

'Early days' to judge Wolves' transfer activity
There has been a fair amount of talk on social media about Wolves' transfer window, with some fans already feeling anxious about a lack of action. It is early days though, and I think there are some positives as well as plenty of time left for the club to make the right departures of key players are a worry. Replacing talent and leadership will not be easy, and it is vital the club gets these decisions right. While I would prefer most signings to be completed in time for Vitor Pereira to work with them in pre-season, it is more important to focus on making the right additions rather than rushing into risky in-house changes have caught my attention too. With the arrival of technical director Domenico Teti, perhaps Pereira will take on more responsibility for transfers, working more like a traditional manager than the modern head coach. The involvement of Jorge Mendes' agency Gestifute and Valdir Cardoso could also be key. This all suggests the club is setting up for a significant summer in the transfer far, Fer Lopez is the only signing. He seems a great prospect with impressive stats, though he lacks top-level experience. The good news is he will get a full pre-season with Pereira and chance to settle stand out as a need. Hugo Bueno impressed on loan at Feyenoord and will probably claim a starting spot, but Wolves need more depth and strong competition on both flanks. Nelson Semedo's contract situation adds another question mark, and a replacement for him may be front, more changes seem likely. Both Goncalo Guedes and Hwang Hee-chan could move on, opening doors for fresh attacking options. Pereira wants players with pace and the ability to win one on ones, so new arrivals should fit this the club's financial year restarting on Tuesday, 1 July, I expect transfer activity to ramp up. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am hopeful we will soon see some thoughtful, well-planned more from Dazzling Dave at Always Wolves, external

Chansiri ends silence but many questions left unanswered
Dejphon Chansiri has ended his silence and issued a statement. It doesn't do much to address the current financial situation at Sheffield Wednesday. It doesn't provide any assurances over future staff payments. It does include the admission that he has "been seriously engaging in looking for investment from new parties and continues to do so to quickly remedy this situation." Chansiri added he's willing to sell. That may provide some comfort for Owls fans who wish for the current chairman to depart. There's still so much more that could be addressed though. Are wages for this month and beyond going to be paid in full, on time? Is there a financial plan in place to get through however long it will take for the club to be bought? Is the asking price now at a realistic enough range to attract the kind of buyer that can get a deal done? This is far more important than the bulk of the statement's content – Chansiri's response to comments made by people associated with a consortium who have made bids for the club. To be fair, Chansiri deserves to have his say when the consortium speak to the media. Yet there's a time and a place and an order of importance here on the topics to be discussed. Not saying anything for so long, then spending a lot of the statement detailing how talks had gone with that group, has irked some fans, looking at the be told, there's been too much online noise over the last few weeks. It isn't helping anyone. Too many 'in the know' rumours (many of which aren't accurate), too many things said and then taken back shortly after, too many people speaking on behalf of others. Fans want things to be sorted behind the scenes. I don't think any of this has helped the situation and it's probably why Chansiri wanted to needs to know there is short and long-term financial security in place at Sheffield Wednesday. My understanding is the first instalment of TV money for Championship clubs is due imminently. That will provide some financial respite. Then there's a second instalment to come in the near future. That helps -- but is it enough to sustain the club to the start of the season and possibly beyond? There's also no clarity on the situation with the North Stand, with rumours galore after a recent meeting between the club and the Safety Advisory Group. Manager Danny Rohl appears set to depart, so who coaches the team? What is the make-up of the squad and how will the wages situation impact the players and their desire to stay at Hillsborough? When will work on the training ground be completed, given that isn't the case despite players returning from a summer break today? We've requested interviews with Chansiri and the offer remains open. It would be nice to get a few more answers to some important topics.
