Top politician congratulates Gout Gout on his record-breaking run - and the responses will make you ashamed to be an Australian

Daily Mail6 hours ago

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli's tweet congratulating Aussie sprinter Gout Gout on his latest record-breaking run has unleashed a wave of disgraceful racist abuse aimed at the 17-year-old.
Crisafulli was praising Gout after he stormed to victory at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic on Tuesday in a time of 20.02 seconds, breaking his own Australian 200m record.
'A Queenslander showing the world how it's done. Congratulations on another incredible run Gout Gout,' he wrote on X.
But what followed was a series of deplorable comments about the sprinter, who was born in the Brisbane suburb of Ipswich.
'Low bar to qualify as a Queenslander these days,' read one of the tamest comments in the thread.
Daily Mail Australia has chosen not to publish any of the other responses to the tweet.
Some sports fans called out the awful behaviour.
'Born and bred in Queensland. These comments are a joke. Proud of the lad,' one wrote.
'Great achievement! And a great Aussie Guy - this is what our country is built on,' another commented.
'He's an Australian ffs. F**k QLDers are insufferable with this sort of s**t,' added a third.
This is not the first time Gout has been subjected to racism as he stamps himself as one of the brightest up-and-coming talents in world athletics.
In December last year athletics commentator Tim Rosen chose to delete a post he made featuring one of Gout's runs because of the deplorable comments it attracted.
Many of those remarks, like the ones in response to Crisafulli's post, claimed Gout should not be thought of as Australian.
That same month the Age newspaper issued an apology after it was hit with allegations of racism for confusing Gout with Aussie runner Peter Bol - who was born in Sudan - on its front page.
Up against the highest-quality field he has ever faced, with two of his competitors having broken the 20-second mark, the Aussie blitzed the last 20 metres to pull ahead of Cuban star Reynier Mena in his sensational victory.
'Get some more races in me and it [the 20-second barrier] will drop for sure,' Gout said after the event.
'I feel good. New personal best, new national record in my first European race.
'I don't feel any pressure, because as soon as I step out on that track, it's must me by myself and what I've got to do - my favourite thing, and that's to run.
'So I just go out there and run and nothing stops me from doing that.
'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday.
'I knew Mena would come hard at me in the first 100 but I was confident I'd be close enough to come home strongly in the second part of the race, which is, of course, my stronger part.
'I felt calm but strong as I came off the turn and was confident I'd be strong enough to get the win.

How does Delap stack up against Jackson?

Given Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal in the win against ES Tunis and, with Nicolas Jackson serving a ban, he can use the Club World Cup to press his claim for a starting role in how do the two forwards compare?Delap, 22, had to make the most of limited service as Ipswich struggled in the Premier League last term. He had far fewer touches in the box than Jackson and, as a result, attempted over twice as many shots from outside the despite this, he scored two more goals than Jackson, netting 12 times from an xG of just 9.3. He also posted better shot conversion and shot accuracy figures and was far more efficient at converting what Opta define as 'big chances' – a weak spot for Senegal forward Jackson, who only scored seven of 26 such opportunities. Overall, the two players offer contrasting profiles for Blues boss Enzo Maresca. Jackson has shown he suits a possession-focused side, completing 76.9% of his passes last term while often looking to lay the ball off to nearby more isolated, Delap had to rely on hopeful flick-ons when receiving long balls up to him but did excel in terms of workrate and hard Ipswich often on the back foot, the England Under-21s international used his pace and power to carry the ball forward whenever possible, covering over 3,000m, and taking on opponents 89 times – 27 more than Jackson (who also has genuine speed).Delap also contributed more off the ball, contesting almost twice as many duels and winning a higher proportion of his industry – and his penchant for roughing up defenders – meant he was regularly penalised by referees, accumulating 72 fouls, the second highest in the Premier figure was almost twice as many as Jackson and he picked up nearly double the number of yellow cards as his new striking rival (12 to seven). However, Delap was not sent off, and instead, it is Jackson whose reckless red cards against Newcastle in May and Flamengo in the Club World Cup, have put his disciplinary record under the do you think Delap will fare in the 2025-26 season? Will he reach double figures for goals? And do you put him as first choice striker above Jackson?Let us know your thoughts

Jofra Archer joins England squad for first time in four years ahead of second India Test

Jofra Archer has been added to England 's squad for next week's second Test against India at Edgbaston. The 30-year-old pace bowler, who has not played Test cricket since February 2021, returns to the England set-up in the only change to Ben Stokes ' squad that secured a thrilling five-wicket win in the series opener at Headingley. Archer's Test career has been derailed by a string of injuries. He played his first red-ball match since May 2021 this week, marking his return with a wicket in Sussex's County Championship draw against Durham at Chester-le-Street. Archer burst on to the international scene in 2019, bowling the decisive super-over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's and taking 22 wickets at 20.27 in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series. But an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 and that required four operations curtailed Archer's progress and he then had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, which he first sustained in 2022. He returned to action for England in their ODI series against Bangladesh in March 2023, but was then sidelined by elbow issues and did not play international cricket until May 2024. Archer was ruled out of England's ODI series against the West Indies last month with a thumb injury sustained playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad. The second Test in a five-match series starts next Wednesday, with the following Tests at Lord's (July 10-14), Old Trafford (July 23-27) and the Oval (July 31-August 4).
