Women's tackle football in Winnipeg - that's the Women's Football Alliance's (WFA) goal as it tries to expand into Canada.
The WFA has existed since 2009 in the United States and there are now more than 60 teams in the three different divisions. The pro division features 12 teams that are based in major hubs like Dallas, Houston, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Los Angeles.
Now, the league is looking to expand north of the border. The WFA has partnered with Cosmos Sports and Entertainment to try and find owners to bring teams to major Canadian cities, including Winnipeg.
Cary Kaplan, the president of Cosmos, said there has been tremendous growth in women's sports—ranging from the PWHL to the WNBA—and there isn't a bigger sport than football, making it the perfect time to expand to Canada.
'We're going to follow the lead of soccer, basketball and hockey to different extents and saying, 'We think tackle football is an obvious next one here,'' said Kaplan.
'Winnipeg is an obvious market, you know, top attendance in the CFL. There's a long history of football. There's a history of women's football. The question is, we need somebody, ideally from Manitoba, that steps up and says, 'I think this is a great opportunity.''
Kaplan said they hope to create an entire Canadian division with four to six teams.
The league is also looking to try and expand by as early as next season, which could potentially lead to a Canadian team competing in the WFA championship game in July 2026.
'We're moving quickly because if you are an ownership group, you'd want as much lead time as possible to build your team and get a fan base and do all those kinds of things,' he said.
'Between CFL and NFL, you think of all the people engaged in tackle football—the time has come. There's no logical reason that women's football shouldn't have the opportunity to grow.'
Prospective owners are told to contact Cosmos directly. Kaplan said they are looking for the 'best first right fit.'
'We're not going to wait to have a pool and wait for three months. If one excellent owner from Winnipeg comes forward, we're going to move forward with that.'

(AP) — Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck has won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender, becoming the first at the position to do so since Carey Price a decade ago. Hellebuyck was unveiled as the top MVP vote-getter on an awards show Thursday night prior to Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, hosted by actor and former Arizona State wide receiver Isaiah Mustafa. Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov were the other Hart finalists, just ahead of Colorado's reigning MVP Nathan MacKinnon, as chosen by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Hellebuyck was a landslide winner of the Vezina as picked by general managers. Hellebuyck won the Vezina for a second year in a row and for the third time in his career. He backstopped the Jets to the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular season and the William Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals allowed before losing in the second round of the playoffs to Dallas. Price was the last to pull off the Hart-Vezina double in 2015. Hellebuyck is just the sixth goalie to do it, joining Price, Jose Theodore in 2002, Dominik Hasek in 1997 and '98 and Jacques Plante in '62. Kucherov, the Art Ross Trophy winner for leading all scorers with 122 points this season, was also chosen for the Ted Lindsay Award as most outstanding player, as voted on by his peers. The Russian winger was MVP in 2019 when the Lightning finished atop the standings. Draisaitl, the Rocket Richard Trophy recipient for scoring a league-high 52 goals, won the Hart in 2020 after the season was cut short by the pandemic. He became the first German player to be MVP. Los Angeles captain Anze Kopitar won the Lady Byng for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct for a third time, an award announced earlier Thursday. A majority of the awards were already presented over the past few weeks, given out as surprises for the first time with no advanced notice. Jets goaltender Hellebuyck cements spectacular campaign with Hart, Vezina awards
Connor Hellebuyck will have to make room for some more hardware. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player Thursday. He also captured the Vezina Trophy as the league's top netminder for a third time. Hellebuyck is the first goalie to claim the Hart since Montreal's Carey Price a decade ago. The 32-year-old from Commerce, Mich., topped the stats page this season with a 47-12-3 record, a .925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average to go along with eight shutouts. Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov and Edmonton Oilers centre Leon Draisaitl were the other Hart finalists. Kucherov won the Ted Lindsay Award as league MVP last week in a vote among members of the NHL Players' Association. Hellebuyck joins a list of Hart-winning goaltenders that also includes Roy Worters (1928-29), Chuck Rayner (1949-50), Al Rollins (1953-54), Jacques Plante (1961-62), Dominik Hasek (1996-97, 1997-98) and Jose Theodore (2001-02). Hotel boom igniting tourism and economic growth in Ottawa, experts say

Five major international hotel brands are expanding in the city, putting Ottawa on track to become a premier Canadian destination for tourists and business. AC Hotel by Marriott Ottawa Downtown opened on Rideau Street in April. The location is ideal for travellers staying and exploring the heart of the city. Two other Marriott-branded hotels are coming to Ottawa. The Moxy Ottawa downtown is expected to open in the ByWard Market in 2026, followed by a Renaissance Hotel opening on Slater Street in 2027. The grand opening of the highly anticipated Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at the Rideau Carleton Raceway is on July 3, and in the fall of 2025 The Alt Hotel Ottawa Airport is expected to make its launch, designed with a connection directly into the airport's terminal. 'That's a good show of confidence in our destination and it's an even better show of confidence in our local economy.' Alex Forrester is visiting Ottawa for a conference and brought his family along for a mini vacation. 'Typically, with children, we are staying at hotels,' says Forrester. 'We're staying at the Fairmont, so it's a short walk to everything downtown, which has been convenient for us.' Alexander Thomas, visiting from the UK, used websites to help him find the perfect place to stay while in the capital. 'On we got the option to see the map which is close to the attractions. So, I liked that. I booked the hotel,' he said. Local businesses are also excited for the boom, especially as the city continues to rebuild after the pandemic. 'We're now back to more or less normal levels of tourism and we are growing. We're now looking at growing our tourism, our visitor's industry, and hotels are aware,' says Miousse. With the Hard Rock's brand recognition and The Alt Hotel's proximity to the airport, Miousse says, 'It's really good for business in general because it just brings people out there to enjoy the surroundings of these hotels as well.' The new hotels also support the city's goal of growing conference and corporate events, with amenities tailored to business and leisure travellers.
