British comedian Dawn French faces backlash over October 7 video, apologises to fans
IN LONDON Dawn French has apologised 'unreservedly' after posting a since-deleted video about the ongoing conflict in Gaza, admitting it was done 'clumsily'. The British actress and comedian, 67, faced backlash after sharing her thoughts on the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, and was accused of belittling the horror of the event which triggered the war when she described the murder of 1,200 people as a 'bad thing'. In the 40-second video, French attempted to critique supporters of Israel's ongoing military action in Gaza, saying in an exaggerated tone that the situation is 'complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no. 'Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to us … and we want that land … and we have history … Those people aren't really even people, are they?' she continued, ending each statement with 'no'. The video was originally posted on Thursday but was taken down by Saturday, with the star releasing an apology statement. 'OK, it's important to address this. I posted a video in the style I've been using for social media in an effort to convey an important point. I clumsily used a mocking tone,' French said. 'My intention was NEVER to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened on Oct 7 2023 and what continues to unfold from that brutal, unthinkable, unforgivable, savage attack.' The Vicar of Dibley star insisted her intention had been 'to mock and point the finger of shame at the behaviour of the cruel leaders on all sides of this atrocious war'. She added: 'THEY were my target, but clearly I failed to do that, and that's on me. I apologise unreservedly, and I'm particularly sorry that my disgust at Hamas didn't figure. It appeared one-sided and that is wrong.' French also said her 'heart broke' for all the innocent people who were 'killed, tortured, [raped] and kidnapped', and that she'd been 'feeling increasingly helpless and hopeless' witnessing the 'carnage and destruction worsen', especially with the images of 'starving children'. 'History has taught us never to stand by and allow this kind of inhumane violence to be wrought on anyone, especially innocent children,' she wrote. 'I have felt my silence is complicit or even somehow sanctioning. So in my small way, I wanted to voice my desire to say NO – to both sides – to any further violence. 'I hope you will understand my intention was not to offend, but clearly I have. For which I am sorry and I have removed the video.' English actress Tracy-Ann Oberman was one of the high-profile voices who spoke out against French's post, describing herself as 'saddened' by it. 'This mocking voice 'bad thing' of October 7 that Dawn (who I revere by the way) appears ro [sic] be mocking involved the most horrific terrorist attack,' she wrote on social media. Meanwhile, comedy writer Lee Kern also called out the actress for her 'sneering' tone. 'What you sneeringly mock as a 'bad thing' included the grieving children I met in hospital whose friends and family had been murdered, kidnapped and raped and who themselves were coming to terms with their own life-altering injuries,' he wrote. 'It also includes the 1,200 people murdered and tortured on October 7 … You proactively broadcast – with misplaced pride – a wicked glee in your mockery and dismissal of Jewish suffering, pain and death.' Approximately 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack on October 23, 2023, to which Israel responded with a large-scale ground offensive in Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has stated that more than 50,000 people have been killed as a result, many of whom are reportedly women and children.

Jared Leto facing allegations of inappropriate behaviour from nine women
Jared Leto is facing allegations from nine women of inappropriate behaviour, including with a teenage girl. The frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars and star of films including House of Gucci and Suicide Squad, 53, is alleged to have inflicted the behaviour on them over the course of nearly two decades, and the accusations involve women who say they were teenagers at the time of the alleged incidents. According to an exposé published by Air Mail, the claims, which have apparently circulated in Hollywood for years, have now been brought into the open, with one woman stating to the outlet: 'It's been an open secret for a long time.' The accusations came to light after Los Angeles-based DJ Allie Teilz, 30, re-shared a 2012 Facebook post on her Instagram Stories, in which she alleged Jared assaulted her when she was 17. She claimed: 'You're not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… in a kilt… And a snow hat. 'I was assaulted and traumatised by this creep when I was 17,' She further alleged Jared 'knew' her age but 'didn't care', describing his actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable'. A second woman, who remained anonymous, told Air Mail Jared approached her in 2006 when she was 16 at Urth Caffé in Los Angeles. She said: 'I looked down and it was Jared Leto. We had a quick conversation, and he got my number.' And she claimed the actor called her days later, adding: 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what… it was the weirdest, grossest voice… (but) for me, it's Jared, you know?' The woman alleged their late-night conversations 'turned sexual', and claimed Leto asked: 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d***?' Model Laura La Rue, 33, also alleged she met Leto in 2008 when she was 16 and he was 36, at a Yes! on Prop Two animal rights benefit. She said: 'He asked how old I was. I said, 'I'm 16. How old are you?'' La Rue claimed Jared still asked for her number despite knowing her age, and later invited her to his Los Angeles home, where he was 'flirting' and 'teasing (her) the whole time (she) was there.' Jared's representative denied La Rue's and the other accounts to Air Mail, stating: 'Their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms. La Rue later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' La Rue denied applying for such a role. More females made leads accusations against Jared to Air Mail, while sources also described parties at his Los Angeles home with a ratio of 60 'very young women to four or five men', where guests were allegedly encouraged to skinny dip. Jared's publicist said the actor 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years'.

Crown Theatre Perth tickets go on sale to CATS 40th anniversary tour starring Gabriyel Thomas as Grizabella
Musical theatre performer Gabriyel Thomas has taken dogged dedication to the next level to make her Jellicle CATS dream come true. During the final weeks of Perth's Sister Act season — where she played Michelle and alternated the role of Deloris Van Cartier — Thomas would spend her weekdays in Sydney-based CATS rehearsals and weekends on the Crown Perth Theatre stage. While that is a lot of frequent flyer points, the 29-year-old said she would have done anything to be in the 40th anniversary Australian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Not only is the Ohio-born performer in the record-breaking musical, but she has landed the role of former glamour cat and now ostracised feline, Grizabella. 'My introduction to musical theatre was CATS the musical,' Thomas said, laughing at the full circle moment. 'It's crazy how life plays out that way but my mum just randomly brought home the 1998 VHS one day and from that moment on, I just remember being hooked. 'I don't even know if I would be a performer if it weren't for CATS, which is so crazy that I'm in this rehearsal room now for this show.' Thomas will star in the production alongside Todd McKenney, Mark Vincent, Lucy Maunder, Des Flanagan, Jarrod Draper, Leigh Archer and the rest of the talented ensemble. The show opens in Sydney from June 17 before the tour reaches Crown Theatre Perth on November 8. 'I think the thing that's set apart this experience from any other rehearsal experience is the fact that everyone who is teaching the show is someone who has been a part of the CATS world for years,' Thomas, who is based between New York City and Melbourne, said. 'They love the show, and they have so many different specifics and nuances they're able to bring into the rehearsal space that helps us as actors get into the mindset and get into the world of the show. 'It's just been a magical room, because the people who are teaching the room have already brought the magic there, and they just kind of hold our hand and show us how we can bring that magic to the stage.' CATS is at Crown Theatre Perth from November 8. Ticket presales start June 10, with general public sales from June 13 at
