FBM KLCI sees muted trading action ahead of the weekend
KUALA LUMPUR: Trading on Bursa Malaysia remained subdued ahead of the weekend as investors awaited the release of US payrolls data, a key indicator of economic health amid the ongoing tariffs saga.
There was little spark on the domestic market following a disappointing earnings season, with the FBM KLCI on course to end the last trading day of the week 1.53 points lower at 1,516.59.
The declining issues on the market outweighed advancers 2.17-to-1, to suggest a broad weakness. Meanwhile, trading was subdued with 1.14 billion shares changing hands for a low value of RM730.61mil.
PETRONAS-related stocks were among the laggards, following an announcement yesterday that the oil major will be reducing its workforce by 10%, as well as implementing a hiring freeze until end-2026.
PETRONAS Chemicals dropped nine sen to RM3.27, PETRONAS Dagangan shed 24 sen to RM20.90 and PETRONAS Gas slid two sen to RM18.16, while MISC was unchanged at RM7.60.
The most actively traded stocks, meanwhile, were Tanco up one sen to RM1.10, MYEG flat at 93 sen and Reservoir Link unchanged at 35.5 sen.
Regionally, markets were mostly in negative territory in anticipation of the release of more US economic data. China's CSI300 dropped 0.12% to 3,873 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng slid 0.21% to 23,857.
Japan's Nikkei was up 0.23% to 37,640. Singapore's Straits Times gained 0.16% to 3,923.

Iswardy slams ‘blackmail' over Petronas role in Sarawak
SARAWAK PKR leader Iswardy Morni claims the federal government's decision to grant gas distribution rights to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 has directly triggered the recent layoff of 5,000 Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) workers. He argued that the move was made to fulfil political demands rather than serve national interest and warns it could jeopardise Petronas' long-term stability. 'Petronas is not only struggling in terms of operations and revenue, but it has also been forced to let go of thousands of workers. 'We are expected to simply accept a decision that, at its core, stems from political blackmail – If we don't get it, we'll jump (parties),' he said in a statement, without naming any specific political party. Citing Petronas CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik's recent warning that the company could shut down in a decade without restructuring, Iswardy criticised Sarawak's political leadership for what he views as short-sightedness in their resource demands. 'Although he (Tengku Muhammad Taufik) tried to 'play politics' by denying any link between the granting of gas distribution rights to Sarawak and Petronas' internal crisis, we don't need to be geniuses to see the signals of what's really happening,' he added. He directed strong criticism at Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which has backed the takeover of gas distribution rights from the federal government. 'Congratulations on killing your own golden goose, GPS,' he said. The dispute stems from the 2017 formation of Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), a state-owned company set up to manage Sarawak's petroleum and natural gas resources. This move created overlapping authority with Petronas, which has long held exclusive control under the Petroleum Development Act 1974, sparking ongoing federal-state tensions over control of oil and gas resources.

DPM Fadillah: Petronas job cuts unrelated to Petros appointment as sole gas aggregator
KUCHING, June 7 — Petroliam Nasional Berhad's (Petronas) decision to cut over 5,000 jobs, along with a freeze on all promotions and recruitment until December 2026, is unrelated to the recent recognition of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as Sarawak's sole gas aggregator. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof clarified this when met by reporters at the Majlis Ibadah Korban held at Masjid Darul Husni Warrahmah here today. 'No, it has nothing to do with that. It is actually due to the global situation, particularly the decline and fluctuation in oil prices,' he said. Petronas had earlier stated that its internal budgeting was based on Brent crude prices averaging between US$75 and US$80 per barrel. However, the global benchmark has since fallen and is currently hovering around US$65 per barrel. 'Even for Petronas to remain sustainable, oil prices must be above US$60 per barrel. That is why they have to re-evaluate their position,' Fadillah added. — The Borneo Post
