Google names insider Kavukcuoglu to lead AI-powered product development

Time of India2 days ago

Alphabet
's Google on Wednesday appointed an insider to lead its future AI-powered product development, as AI enters a new phase of mainstream adoption, according to a memo from CEO Sundar Pichai to company leaders seen by Reuters.
Koray Kavukcuoglu
, chief technology officer of Google's
DeepMind
AI lab, is taking on the newly created title of chief AI architect. He will also become a new senior vice president, reporting directly to Pichai.
Kavukcuoglu, who will move to California from London, will also continue serving as Google DeepMind's CTO, reporting to its CEO Demis Hassabis, Pichai said in the memo.
"In this expanded role, Koray will accelerate how we bring our world-leading models into our products, with the goal of more seamless integration, faster iteration, and greater efficiency," Pichai said.
Alphabet faces market pressure to demonstrate financial returns on its AI-related capital expenditures, which are expected to hit $75 billion this year, while maintaining its bottom line against the threat of competing AI offerings, as well as antitrust enforcement.
Google said it would put artificial intelligence into the hands of more web surfers and teased a $249.99-a-month subscription for its AI power users at its annual I/O conference in May, along with a flurry of demos that included new smart glasses.
Pichai said in Wednesday's memo that Alphabet was "entering a new phase of the AI platform shift." He told reporters last month that the rise of generative AI was not at the full expense of online search.
Google has since signed a deal to supply computing capacity to its biggest AI rival OpenAI via its cloud service, Reuters exclusively reported on Tuesday, marking a surprising collaboration between two prominent competitors in the AI sector.

India moves to conserve its rare earths, seeks halt to Japan exports: Report

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal asked IREL to stop its exports of rare earths, mainly neodymium, a key material used in magnets for electric vehicle motors, one of the sources said. (Image used only for representational purpose) (REUTERS) Check Offers India has asked state-run miner IREL to suspend a 13-year-old agreement on rare earth exports to Japan and to safeguard supplies for domestic needs, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, aiming to reduce India's dependence on China. IREL also wants to develop India's capacity for rare earth processing, which is dominated globally by China and has become a weapon in escalating trade wars. China has curbed its rare earth materials exports since April, pressuring automakers and high-tech manufacturers worldwide. In a recent meeting with auto and other industry executives, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal asked IREL to stop its exports of rare earths, mainly neodymium, a key material used in magnets for electric vehicle motors, one of the sources said. The Commerce Ministry, IREL and the Department of Atomic Energy, which oversees IREL, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The sources declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. Under a 2012 government agreement, IREL supplies rare earths to Toyotsu Rare Earths India, a unit of Japanese trading house Toyota Tsusho, which processes them for export to Japan where they are used to make magnets. In 2024, Toyotsu shipped more than 1,000 metric tons of rare earth materials to Japan, commercially available customs data showed. That is one-third of the 2,900 tons mined by IREL, although Japan relies mainly on China for its rare earths supply. Toyota Tsusho and Toyotsu did not immediately respond to requests for comment. IREL has been exporting rare earths due to a lack of domestic processing capacity, but following the recent disruptions to supplies of Chinese material it wants to keep its rare earths at home and expand domestic mining and processing, a second source said, adding that IREL is awaiting statutory clearances at four mines. However, India may not immediately be able to stop supplies to Japan because they fall under a bilateral government agreement, the person said. IREL wants this to be "amicably decided and negotiated because Japan is a friendly nation", the person added. Japan's Trade Ministry said in a statement to Reuters: 'We would like to refrain from answering questions about bilateral exchanges in general, not just about this matter." EXPANSION PLANS China's recent export controls on rare earth materials have rocked the global auto industry, which has warned of supply chain disruptions and production halts. China also weaponised its supplies in 2010, when it briefly stopped shipments to Japan. That prompted the Japanese to turn to India for rare earths. India has the world's fifth-largest rare earth reserves, at 6.9 million metric tons, but there is no domestic magnet production. India relies on imported magnets, mainly from China. In the fiscal year to March 2025, India imported 53,748 metric tons of rare earth magnets, government data showed. These are used in automobiles, wind turbines, medical devices and other manufactured goods. Rare earth mining is restricted to IREL, which supplies India's Atomic Energy Department with materials for nuclear power projects and defence-related applications. India lacks wide-scale technology and infrastructure to mine rare earths, and the development of any commercially viable domestic supply chain is years away, analysts said. IREL has a rare earths extraction plant in the eastern Indian state of Odisha and a refining unit in Kerala, in southern India. The miner, founded in 1950, plans to produce 450 metric tons of extracted neodymium in the fiscal year to March 2026, with a plan to double that by 2030, the second person said. It is also looking for a corporate partner for the production of rare earth magnets for the auto and pharmaceutical industries, the person said. India is firming up plans for incentives to companies to set up rare earth processing and magnet production facilities to meet local demand, people familiar with the matter told Reuters earlier this month. Crypto, Meme Coins, Trump-Branded Bibles: Here's How Donald Trump Made $600mn Last Year

Last Updated: One of the ventures that caught all the eyes has been the launch of the meme coin $TRUMP, introduced earlier in 2024. Donald Trump has an asset worth at least USD 1.6 billion, with the US president reportedly earning USD 600 million from crypto, golf clubs, licensing and other ventures, according to a public financial disclosure report released on Friday. The latest annual financial disclosure of Trump covers the 2024 calendar year, showing a boost in his personal wealth, thanks largely to his cryptocurrency investments. Alongside the crypto gains, he also reported hefty earnings from real estate developments and various other business ventures. According to a Reuters analysis, the total value of Trump's declared assets exceeds USD 1.6 billion. Though Trump has previously claimed that his businesses are held in a trust overseen by his children, the financial records indicate that profits from those ventures still make their way to him. This ongoing financial connection has fueled continued allegations of potential conflicts of interest. The financial disclosure signed on June 13 did not mention the exact timeframe it covered. However, looking at the listings of the cryptocurrency and other figures, it appears the report reflects activity only through the end of December 2024. It means that it likely omits a significant portion of the funds raised more recently by the Trump family's crypto ventures. Given the rapid pace at which the Trump family has brokered deals since Donald Trump's return to the political spotlight, the filing serves as a snapshot of a transitional moment: a time when they were beginning to explore the cryptocurrency space, but still heavily rooted in real estate and golf course operations. One of the ventures that caught all the eyes has been the launch of the meme coin $TRUMP, introduced earlier in 2024. This single digital asset is estimated to have generated around USD 320 million in fees. The family has also earned over USD 400 million through World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance firm. The disclosures reveal that Trump personally reported USD 57.35 million from token sales connected to the company and holds approximately 15.75 billion governance tokens in the venture. The family is also involved in a bitcoin mining operation and exchange-traded digital asset funds. According to a calculation by Reuters, besides his income and assets from his business, the president reported at least USD 12 million in income, including through interest and dividends, from passive investments totaling at least USD 211 million. His biggest investments were in alternative fund manager Blue Owl Capital Corp and in government bond funds managed by Charles Schwab and Invesco. Trump's latest financial disclosure only listed value ranges for assets and income, so Reuters used the lowest estimates—meaning his actual wealth is likely even higher. The filing showed Trump made at least USD 217.7 million from his Florida properties, including his golf resorts in Jupiter, Doral, and West Palm Beach, along with the Mar-a-Lago club. The biggest earner was Trump National Doral, which brought in USD 110.4 million. These figures reflect revenue, not profit. The document also highlighted international income: USD 5 million in licensing from Vietnam, USD 10 million in development fees from India, and nearly USD 16 million from a Dubai deal. Trump made money from various branded products too—USD 1.3 million from the Greenwood Bible, USD 2.8 million from Trump Watches, and USD 2.5 million from his line of sneakers and fragrances. He also earned USD 1.16 million from NFT trading cards featuring his image, while Melania Trump made around USD 216,700 from her own NFT collection. First Published: June 14, 2025, 16:26 IST

US President Donald Trump has reported making $57.35 million from his family's cryptocurrency ventures, a report claims. These figures were reportedly revealed as part of his first public financial disclosure report of this term. As per the report, the US President included income from token sales at crypto firm World Liberty Financial and reported holding 15.75 billion governance tokens in the same venture. The financial disclosure did not specify the exact period it covered. However, details within the cryptocurrency listings and other information in the disclosure suggest the report covers data through the end of December 2024. This timeframe would exclude the majority of funds raised by the Trump family's cryptocurrency ventures during his current term. Donald Trump's biggest crypto investments revealed Earlier this year, the president introduced a meme coin called $TRUMP, which has since generated about $320 million in fees, the news agency Reuters reports.
