2025 South Australian Derby: Goldrush Guru pushes on for Andrew Gluyas

Trainer Andrew Gluyas will push on to Saturday's $1 million South Australian Derby with Goldrush Guru after a 'fair run' in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes.
Last year's Victoria Derby winner raced keenly in the early stages of the Derby lead-up before jockey Jason Holder was forced to release him to pilot the field.
The colt took up the lead at the 1400m, sticking on honestly for fifth, beaten two and a half lengths by Athanatos.
It wasn't a performance to wax lyrical about, but Gluyas was hopeful it placed the star colt in good shape for the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on Saturday at Morphettville.

'He's good, he's come through it well, we'll accept and push on to Saturday,' Gluyas said.
'I thought he didn't go too badly, he just couldn't quite settle there and when they slackened the pace a bit he just got flushed out.
'Jason let him roll because he didn't want to have to have an argument with him, he'll be better for that, I think the profile for the back-up this year will really suit him. We are just really keen on an inside draw.'
Goldrush Guru is an $11 chance in Sportsbet's futures market for the SA Derby, in which he will again be ridden by Holder.
Day One of Adelaide's autumn carnival was a positive one for Gluyas: Air Assault and Seeking Stardom performed strongly, while promising sprinter Watchme Win continued his rise with a commanding win in the Group 3 John Hawkes Stakes.

The four-year-old son of Harry Angel will now be tested at Group 1 level in the $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10.
'We are really excited with the way he's taken a good step each run, he was excellent Saturday,' he said.
'I felt that it was on the back of an excellent run the start before as well, he's building form and racing really well.
'He's got an opportunity to run six furlongs at a high standard (in The Goodwood), I feel that will suit him now too with a few runs under his belt going to 1200m.
'Jason worked hard to get his weight down to ride Watchme Win – that was good.'

Seeking Stardom finished a close third behind Zloties in the Group 2 Queen Of The South, while Air Assault finished fourth behind Regal Azmon in an Open Handicap and will head to the Group 3 Cummings Stakes on May 10.
'It was almost a career-best performance,' Gluyas said of Seeking Stardom.
'Perhaps she's taken the next step as well, she was well handled by Taylor (Johnstone).'

Rise At Dawn finished 2-1/2 lengths off Joliestar in Saturday's Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup and Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Will and JD, is keen to give him a Group 1 shot seven days later. Rise At Dawn carried 59kg in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but now plunges to 52.5kg in the Stradbroke. 'I was quite happy with his run on Saturday as he was racing at short of his best trip and was racing at weight-for-age against some of the best sprinters in Australia,' Hayes said. 'He sat in behind the speed, he held his run right to the line and looks to have pulled up well. 'He now drops a stack in weight so that's a huge thing.' Photo :. There have been few Stradbroke contenders in history who have been a shorter price than what War Machine is six days out from the great race. Hayes indicated War Machine had improved from the last time he was seen at the races, when blowing away his opposition and stamping his Stradbroke ticket when dominating his rivals by 2-3/4 lengths in the BRC Sprint. Hayes said both War Machine and Rise At Dawn had golden chances in the $3 million Group 1 handicap. 'Either one of them could win. 'The big boy (War Machine) is well. 'His last run was a perfect tune-up for the Straddy and he is a very progressive horse who gets in with 53kg. 'He's a horse who is a bit lazy in trackwork, like Mr Brightside, but he turns up race day.' Connections would need to pay a hefty late entry fee and Dale will decide in the next 24 years whether to unleash the rising nine-year-old on the Stradbroke. Dale has never tested Front Page over 1400m but the prospect of a weaker Stradbroke and a week of fine weather may convince connections to deploy the proven Group 1 performer. * Tony Gollan is holding out hope that Transatlantic will sneak into the Stradbroke field. Transatlantic will jump over other contenders in the ballot order after his win in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap on Saturday at Eagle Farm. The 60-year-old, who played 211 games in the AFL, detailed what he endures after putting his body on the line during the league's toughest period. 'Some mornings my beautiful partner Julie has to put on my shoes and socks for me,' Brereton said while speaking at the Norm Smith Oration at the MCG on Thursday. 'With the pain in my spine, where they put in a cage inserted there, I can't reach. I just can't put on socks and shoes. 'Some days I have to walk down the stairs sideways because I haven't had any cartilage — bone on bone, that is — for 40 years. 'Some days I can't shake hands with other men, and if they do so, I fear they'll re-open some of the broken bones in my hands from defenders' spoils and from when (a rival player) jumped on my hand deliberately. 'Some days I have to crab my way down the stairs because my often half-a-dozen times reconstructed ankle will not flex any more.' Brereton helped from field in the 1989 Grand Final after being struck by opponent Mark Yeates. Brereton and his teammates celebrate winning the 1988 Grand Final. Brereton says the gruelling daily battles have taken a toll on his mental wellbeing. Despite it all he wouldn't change a thing from his career. 'Some days I double up from rancid heartburn from the endless dosages of (painkillers and anti-inflammatories),' he said. 'Some nights I sleep very little because of the arthritis in my shoulder joints. That's from decades of lifting as heavy weights as I could, purely because the position I played required it. 'Some mornings, I pathetically allow myself to become melancholy and even teary over the degeneration and the physical toll that football has taken on my body. 'I often ask myself, in that moment of true misery, when I can't move, that moment of weakness, I'll ask myself, 'Was it worth it?'. 'And the answer's always the same. I'd do it all over again, exactly the same again. 'Maybe next time, though in the next lifetime, I might go a little harder.' Brereton was a key player for the Hawks during their blistering run in the 80s and early 90s when they won five out of nine premierships. Across that same span they appeared in eight Grand Finals, losing twice to Essendon and once to Carlton. During the 1989 Grand Final against Geelong, the Hawthorn centre half forward was taken out in the opening moments of play in a targeted hit that left him with two broken ribs and a ruptured kidney. Famously it wasn't enough to keep him out of the contest as he helped the Hawks win their second straight flag. Brereton ultimately departed the Hawks at the end of the 1993 season and joined the Sydney Swans in 1994 before his illustrious AFL career came to an end in 1995 as a member of Collingwood. 'KL Iro, he has been a revelation on this left hand side of the field hasn't he,' Warren Smith added. Sadly that's as good as it got for the Sharks who were completely blown away in the second half with the Warriors running in 28 unanswered points. The Warriors were in complete control of the contest, scoring five tries to leave Cronulla fans in disbelief. Cronulla's second half display left league legend Alexander stunned, failing to record a single point. 'I can't believe what has happened in the second half … but boy, everything has gone wrong,' Greg Alexander said. For the Warriors it was their fifth win in a row in Australia and moves them level with the Bulldogs at the top of the table just a few months after there were fears they'd get the spoon following a heavy loss in Las Vegas.
