Giants trade struggling 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash to Angels

Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran first baseman and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Angels will send cash or a player to be named to San Francisco for the 31-year-old Wade, who had been with the Giants since 2021. The team designated him for assignment last Wednesday. Los Angeles right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Wade batted .167 with one homer and 15 RBIs for the Giants this season, his struggles culminating with a 2-for-17 performance on the team's most recent road trip. Wade hit a career-high .260 last season, and he gained a reputation in San Francisco for clutch late-game performances. The Angels currently have Nolan Schanuel at first base and six outfielders on their major league roster, but some have position flexibility. Angels general manager Perry Minasian and Giants general manager Zack Minasian are brothers. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Yastrzemski knocks in 3 runs as Giants sweep struggling Braves with a 4-3 win

Mike Yastrzemski drove in three runs as the San Francisco Giants extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. The Giants swept the three-game series and sent the Braves to their seventh straight loss. Atlanta has lost 14 of its last 17 games and fell to 27-37, a season-low 10 games under .500. San Francisco trailed 3-1 in the fourth when Yastrzemski sparked a three-run inning for the Giants. He tied the game with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line and scored on an error by the Braves' Ozzie Albies, who couldn't handle a ground ball by Tyler Fitzgerald to second. Yastrzemski also had a sacrifice fly in the second that tied the game at 1, after the Braves scored in the first. Matt Olson drove in all three runs for Atlanta. He knocked in a run with a fielder's choice grounder in the first and had a two-run double in the third that put Atlanta ahead. The Giants got three scoreless innings from their bullpen after Landen Roupp (4-4) allowed three runs in six innings. Camilo Doval recorded his ninth save of the season. Braves starter Spencer Strider (0-5) also gave up three earned runs in six innings and remains winless. Key moment Yastrzemski, who entered the game hitless in his last 17 at-bats with runners in scoring position, delivered a clutch two-out hit to tie the game in the fourth. Key stat Despite losing 14 of 17, the Braves have been outscored by just eight runs (72-64) during that span. Sunday's loss was their eighth loss in the stretch by one run. Up next The Giants are off on Monday before facing the Rockies in a three-game set. LHP Kyle Harrison (1-1, 4.34 ERA) is scheduled to start on Tuesday. The Braves begin a three-game set at the Brewers on Monday, with LHP Chris Sale (3-4, 2.93 ERA) scheduled to start.

The San Francisco 49ers had their sights set on Robert Saleh arguably more than any player available through the draft or free agency though it remains perfectly clear that he is the right fit to lead Fred Warner and this promising defensive core.

The San Francisco 49ers had their sights set on Robert Saleh arguably more than any player available through the draft or free agency though it remains perfectly clear that he is the right fit to lead Fred Warner and this promising defensive core. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2024 San Francisco 49ers were a shell of the team that had become a staple among the NFC's elite and the NFL altogether. Coming off Super Bowl and NFC Championship Game appearances in the years prior, the Niners took a significant dip in 2025. Advertisement San Francisco missed the playoffs and plummeted to the bottom of the NFC West standings. Their 6-11 record left them in last place. Several factors played into their downfall with injuries having a significant responsibility there. But there were some things within their control that they simply missed the mark on. Namely, the Niners regressed as a defensive unit. San Francisco ended the season as a bottom six group in points per game at 25.6. However, they have made the steps necessary to engineer some changes. They notably fired Nick Sorensen and have reunited with Robert Saleh as the defenisve coordinator. At the time, the Niners did not really look deeply into another candidate, banking on his return. The gamble paid off and he is back in the Bay Area. Advertisement Despite his return, the Niners have sustained some major losses on this side through free agency when several spots previously occupied were brought open. Nonetheless, veteran linebacker Fred Warner had one word to describe Saleh's presence back on the coaching staff: "crucial." This echoes the feeling that Warner held earlier in the year immediately following the re-hire of Saleh. 'Just get back to being dominant,' Warner said. 'That's just what I'm used to. And it's going to take a lot of work, a lot of hard effort, but I know we're capable of doing it.' That work is now underway with the calendar in June and OTAs underway. While there are some new faces in the locker room for this defense, they are the selection of Saleh who will now imprint his style and identity across this formation. Advertisement If the results bear fruit to his first stint with the team that ended after the 2020 season Saleh and Warner will both be back playing meaningful games in the winter months.
