Young tourist fights for life as legs torn off in freak boat propeller accident
"Hannah was not intoxicated. She fell from the boat. It's hurtful to say she jumped because she did not."
A young tourist is fighting for her life after having both legs torn off in a horror freak accident.
Hannah Smith from Alabma remains in critical condition in hospital after she was sucked into a boat's propeller which tore both her legs off on a dream holiday to the Bahamas.
The 22-year-old recently graduated with top honours for her arts degree at Miles College and was celebrating when the nightmare incident unfolded.
Hannah fell from the side of a pontoon boat as it was docking and was suddenly dragged beneath the water by its propeller, leaving her with catastrophic injuries and partially severed legs.
Her life was only saved thanks to the swift action of two female passengers, who managed to grab her arm and pull her back on board. Hannah was then rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to the US for surgery, reports the Mirror.
Sources told how alcohol may have played a role in the accident, with some claiming Hannah had jumped into the water.
But mum Tracy Smith furiously hit back at the claims, saying: "Hannah was not intoxicated. She fell from the boat. It's hurtful to say she jumped because she did not."
Tracy also questioned why police didn't interview Hannah's best friend Brooklyn Pitre - who had witnessed the accident. "These kids work their a***s off to graduate. It was a celebratory trip," she said. "Do they have fun? Yes. Were they drunk? No. Did she jump? No. Are we completely aware of what happened? No.
"But could there have been a safety mechanism that was off, was the boat rocking, we are not 100% sure of that. There are so many things that could have been happening. I want to know the truth. This was a young woman, happy, celebrating her life and now she's fighting for it."
Hannah's dad Marvin said he had spoken to the doctor treating Hannah at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, and everything he told him "suggested she was coherent" and "not inebriated" when she arrived.
To celebrate her graduation on May 3, Hannah booked the luxury Caribbean cruise via the Carnival Sunrise ship. She and pal Brooklyn were on their way back from an excursion to Pearl Island - a tropical getaway known for its swimming pigs and dolphins - when she reportedly fell into the water moments after the pontoon ferry arrived on the Nassau Cruise Port at 3.55pm.
The ferry's captain immediately turned off the engine when he heard panicked cries of "she jumped off" and a loud noise coming from the boat's starboard. He then saw Hannah in the water surrounded by a pool of blood.
A witness told police two female passengers grabbed Hannah's arm and dragged her back onto the boat before she was rushed to hospital with "serious" injuries to her legs and lower body. The 22-year-old was then flown to the US Wednesday where she has undergone further surgeries.
Marvin described his daughter as a "scholar, leader and community advocate" in a GoFundMe appeal set up to help the family cover the mounting medical bills.

He said: "Hannah graduated at the top of her class with Summa Cum Laude, from Miles College, earning respect and admiration from her peers, professors and sorority sisters. Known for her dedication to service, academic excellence and uplifting others, Hannah now finds herself in need of the community's support. This boating accident will not define your life. We need you to have many more birthdays, more holidays, more life experiences."
The Royal Bahamas Police said an investigation into the freak accident was ongoing, adding in a statement: "The victim is alleged to have entered the water from a vessel she was a passenger on while it was attempting to dock. She sustained serious injuries to her lower body, caused by the vessel's propeller."

Tragic mum, 31, 'stabbed to death by pupil' pictured for first time
A 14-year-old French schoolboy is facing 20 eyars in prison after allegedly stabbing a teaching assistant to death after she asked to search his bag for weapons. A young teaching assistant who was stabbed to death by a teenage pupil in a horror knife attack at a school in France has been pictured for the first time. Known only as Melanie G, the single mum and former hairdresser, was looking for concealed weapons alongside a police officer - in line with national education policy - at the gates of Françoise Dolto secondary school in Nogent-sur-Marne, near Paris when the horror unfolded around 8.30am on Tuesday, reports the Mirror. She had only started the job last year, giving up her career in hairdressing to spend more time with her little boy. French police say the 14-year-old schoolboy was tonight facing 20 years in prison after allegedly stabbing the 31-year-old teaching assistant to death after she asked to search his bag for knives. The incident followed a spate of school knife attacks in France, including one in April, when a teenage girl was stabbed to death and three others were wounded at a school in Nantes, in the west of the country. A source investigating the Nogent attack said: "The boy responsible was uninjured, after stabbing his victim multiple times. He was soon restrained by staff, and then arrested by the police officer present at the bag check." The source added: "One of the arresting officers suffered a slight cut to the hand." Referring to the alleged killer, the source said: "He is now in custody, and facing up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in a youth court of a deliberate killing." Local prosecutor Denis Devallois confirmed that a criminal enquiry had been launched into the killing, and that the perpetrator faced prison. The boy who cannot be named for legal reasons had been arrested twive from the school for disruptive behaviour, and was a student representative in the school's anti-bullying programme, claimed the source. Following today's killing, French President Emmanuel Macron described a "senseless wave of violence" in France. He added: "We all stand with [Melanie G.'s] family, her loved ones, her colleagues and the entire educational community. The nation is in mourning and the government is mobilised to reduce crime." Mélanie G. lived in Sarcey, around seven miles from Nogent, where she also worked as a municipal councillor. Paying tribute, her sister-in-law said: "She was funny, gentle, and very kind, and had one goal – to look after her child. She gave up hairdressing because she wanted more days off to be with him." Last month, France's Education Ministry announced that 958 bag checks in schools had resulted in the seizure of 94 knives across the country.

Madeleine McCann detectives 'sample clothes and bones found during search'
Madeleine McCann detectives 'sample clothes and bones found during search' A search was carried out by German and Portuguese detectives last week Search teams have been conducting new searches as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Image: PA ) Police are currently examining "clothes and bones" that were discovered during the recent search for Madeleine McCann, according to reports. Last Thursday saw the conclusion of a three-day operation by German and Portuguese detectives, who combed through a 120-acre area in Lagos, Portugal. This latest effort aimed to uncover fresh evidence against Christian Brueckner, the main suspect, took place roughly 30 miles from where Madeleine vanished in May 2007 at the age of three. Despite initial indications suggesting no new leads had emerged, it's now been reported that fragments of clothing and bones found at the site are set for analysis this week. The search, marking the first of its kind since 2023, involved intensive examination of the local terrain and derelict buildings, including an abandoned farmhouse. Don't miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here . A source disclosed to Berlin Morning Post: "Several objects have apparently been discovered, which are now being examined in more detail by the police in the laboratory," reports the Mirror. "As Portuguese media report, clothing debris and bones were found, among other things. "The investigators have not officially commented on whether the finds could have anything to do with Madeleine's disappearance but that is clearly their hope." A search team close to Praia De Luz in Portugal (Image: PA Wire/PA Images ) Article continues below Christian Brueckner, currently serving a prison sentence for raping a 72 year old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, reportedly sent a letter to the police regarding the Madeleine McCann case, stating "decisive questions can never be answered". The note, which German media have seen, suggests a series of questions that could potentially link him to the disappearance of the three year old girl. In his letter, Brueckner wrote: "It is the important questions, the decisive questions that can never be answered. "Was I or my vehicle clearly seen near the crime scene on the night of the crime? Is there DNA evidence of me at the crime scene? "Are there DNA traces of the injured party in my vehicle? Are there other traces/DNA carriers of the injured party in my possession? Photos? And, don't forget, is there a body/corpse? All no, no no." The date of the letter's composition remains unclear. Meanwhile, a new documentary has revealed unsettling findings from an old warehouse once owned by Brueckner in Neuwegersleben, Germany. Article continues below The Sun reports that during a search of the premises, police found over 70 children's swimsuits, a toddler's bike, inflatable toys, and a collection of images stored on an 80GB hard drive, allegedly taken in Portugal. They also discovered a laptop, masks, guns, and a handwritten story about drugging and abducting a woman and child from outside a preschool.

Donald Trump accused of 'crossing a line' with latest 'unhinged' behaviour
California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote to supporters, branding Trump's actions a "theatrical display of toughness from an increasingly unhinged president". California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused Donald Trump of deliberately trying to escalate tensions in Los Angeles. Protests erupted over the weekend over a wave of immigration raids in the city - part of the Trump administration's push to deport undocumented people by the millions. The White House had already sparked fury by sending 2,000 of the National Guard - America's state-based military force - into Los Angeles in a bid to quell the unrest, a move criticised as both unhelpful and likely unlawful. The protests started out peacefully - and while there was some vandalism, burning of cars and looting, most of the city was unaffected by them. Yet Trump ramped up the deployment - sending another 2,000 National Guard and 700 US Marines to the city last night. Today, Newsom wrote to supporters, branding Trump's troop movements a "theatrical display of toughness from an increasingly unhinged president". He went on to claim the troop deployments were "DESIGNED to escalate tensions and violence in Los Angeles that he hopes will spread to other parts of the state and country." READ MORE: Yesterday President Trump appeared to call for Newsom to be arrested. "I would do it if I were Tom [Holman, Trump's border czar," he told reporters outside the White House. Newsom responded in a post on X: "The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America." Asked later what crime Newsom had committed, Trump - a convicted felon himself - said: "The crime he committed? Well, the primary crime is running for Governor, because he's done such a bad job. What he's done to that state is what Biden did to this country. And that's pretty bad. It's the wrong philosophy." Meanwhile Democratic members of California's congressional delegation have accused Trump of creating a "manufactured crisis." "It's a deliberate attempt by Trump to incite unrest, test the limits of executive power and distract from the lawlessness of his administration," said Rep. Jimmy Gomez, who organised a press conference at the US Capitol on Tuesday morning. Rep. Jimmy Panetta said that Trump's decision to send in the military was designed to "give him the image and give him the fight and give him the pictures that he wants." Panetta said the delegation would stand with peaceful protesters, but those who are not peaceful are going to pay the consequences. Rep. Nancy Pelosi contrasted Trump's actions now with his handling of the Jan. 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol when law enforcement officers were being beaten. "We begged the president of the United States to send in the National Guard. He would not do it," Pelosi said. The deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state's National Guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to protest against Trump's mass deportations. The last time the National Guard was activated without a governor's permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. In a directive on Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is 'a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.' But California's Attorney General has since filed a lawsuit arguing the deployment is unlawful. On Monday, thousands flooded the streets around City Hall for a union rally ahead of a hearing for arrested labor leader David Huerta, who was freed a few hours later on a $50,000 bond. Huerta's arrest Friday while protesting immigration raids has become a rallying cry for people angry over the administration's crackdown. He is the president of the Service Employees International Union California, which represents thousands of the state's janitors, security officers and other workers. Early protests had a calm and even joyful atmosphere at times, with people dancing to live music and buoyed by Huerta's release. Protesters linked hands in front of a line of police officers outside the downtown federal detention centre where Huerta was being held. Religious leaders joined the protesters, working with organisers at times to de-escalate moments of tension. There was a heavy law enforcement presence in the few square blocks, while most in the immense city of some 4 million people went about their normal business on peaceful streets.
