Inside the Amazon Upfront: There's No Escaping Walton Goggins
Amazon made its play to be the cool advertising partner on Monday night with a relatively zippy Beacon Theater presentation that followed an extremely loud DJ set from Steve Aoki.
Perhaps the aspiring pizza impresario was instructed to keep the arriving crowd awake after enduring both NBCUniversal and Fox earlier in what proved to be an egregiously long day. Whether people were annoyed or enamored with Aoki, the masses seemed to be satisfied by the surprise performance from Lizzo that followed. Flanked by David Bautista and Jason Momoa (co-stars of Amazon MGM Studios' The Wrecking Crew), the flautist marched through the lobby, down one of the center aisles and onto the stage while singing 'About Damn Time.' It was the highest concentration of talent the week had seen thus far.

Amazon's pitch is relatively straightforward. In short, everybody has it. Why waste time dwelling on numbers when there's an absolute canvas of stars waiting backstage? Jason and Travis Kelce, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cena and, making her second upfront appearance of the day, Elizabeth Banks were among those in attendance. That's not to say there weren't stats. VP of US Advertising Sales Tanner Elton noted that the U.S. audience on the ad-supported tier and grown to 130 million.
But the evening was about showing off their talent, which Courtenay Valenti called 'the very best.' It was the Amazon MGM Studios head of film, streaming and theatrical's first time on the Amazon (or possibly any) upfront stage and she followed in former colleague Jennifer Salke's footsteps by introducing everyone they'd gathered for the pep rally.
The Beacon could have just been pumping Delta Airlines levels of oxygen into the cavernous hall, but the crowd seemed genuinely thrilled with the procession of actors. The mere mention of Michael B. Jordan, on hand to announce he's producing a series set in what he's dubbed the 'Creed verse,' prompted one woman to scream before the Sinners star even walked out from behind the curtain. Almost no one, however, got the applause that Walton Goggins did when he showed up with Fallout co-stars Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten. He barely spoke, instead raising his arms up to incite more cheering. His character may be covered in grotesque makeup and missing a nose on the post-apocalyptic drama, but Amazon is certainly glad to be in business with the ascendant White Lotus star. The presentation also brought news that a third season had already been ordered — six months before the second is set to premiere.
But Goggins remains a mere mortal, at least compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actor and former California governor was in especially good spirits while plugging Christmas film The Man With the Bag, as his backstory for the upcoming release devolved into a filibuster stand-up set. 'Jingle All the Way was the greatest Christmas movie of all time,' the former Governor of California noted, dismissing Home Alone and Elf 'or whatever they're called.' 'They play it the whole month of December. I know because my ex-wife calls me about the residual.'
It was apparently with Maria Shriver's happiness in mind that Schwarzenegger signed on to play Santa in the Amazon MGM Studios film.
Speaking of Schwarzenegger's wives, it took True Lies spouse Jamie Lee Curtis to get him off stage. She may have just been there to pitch Scarpetta, her upcoming series alongside Nicole Kidman, but the half-planned/half-improvised moment with Schwarzenegger saw the comedy continue.
'I just want you to know this is elderly abuse,' said Schwarzenegger, who then started praising a recent 60 Minutes segment on his friend and former co-star.
For a moment, it seemed like the two were going to announce a sequel to True Lies. But then Curtis just told an unplanned story about how Schwarzenegger sharing top billing with her on the original, despite his contract stipulating solo status, made her career.
'The people backstage are going to be freaking out,' she said, before asking pulling at his arm. 'Are you ready to terminate this segment?'
Alan Moss, Amazon's vice president of global advertising sales, had the misfortune of closing the show after Schwarzenegger and Curtis' audition host any awards show ever. He made a valiant effort to end the presentation with more business talk, but the time for 'full funnel advertising' talk had clearly passed.

In The Accountant 2, Affleck is joined by Jon Bernthal as Christian's soldier-for-hire brother Braxton, who had a small role in the first film but gets bumped up to basically co-lead here. When Christian needs help with a job, he calls on his estranged brother, and they reconnect as they go on a gun-toting road trip together. It's literally Rain Man as an action thriller. It's funnier than the original, and Affleck and Bernthal are very entertaining together. After a modest theatrical run, it's now streaming on Prime Video, which makes sense; it's very much in the same vein as the Road House remake, one of the streaming service's biggest original hits. If you're math-phobic, here are some other movies to stream or watch on-demand this weekend: : Director Dan Trachtenberg's quest to revitalize the Predator franchise continues with this animated feature that's now streaming on Hulu. The bloody action flick is something of an anthology movie, as warriors from various time periods — a Viking, a ninja in feudal Japan, and a World War II pilot — go up against a Predator alien who sees them as a challenge. It's Trachtenberg's second released Predator movie, after 2022's cult favorite Prey, and will be followed by live-action thriller Predator: Badlands later this year. : Robert De Niro and Robert De Niro star in this Mafia drama. De Niro plays dual roles as 1950s mobsters Vito Genovese and Frank Costello as they fight for control of the Luciano family. It tells famous tales of Mafia history in a way you've seen many times before, but De Niro, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas), and director Barry Sonnenfeld (Bugsy) know what they're doing. There are three actors from The Sopranos in the supporting cast — Kathrine Narducci, Michael Rispoli, and Matt Servitto — if that's something you take into account in deciding whether to watch a mob movie. The Alto Knights flopped in theaters but is looking to find a second life on Max. : Writer-director-producer Tyler Perry is back with a new Netflix drama. Taraji P. Henson stars as Janiyah, a woman at the end of her rope. She's a single mother having an exceptionally bad day. She gets evicted from her apartment, robbed, and disrespected everywhere she goes. She just needs to deposit her check at the bank so she can pay for her daughter's medicine, and when even that goes wrong, she ends up a suspect in a crime she didn't mean to commit, and it turns into a hostage situation. It's a film that empathizes with everyone who is just a few bad breaks away from calamity. The supporting cast includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, and Sinbad. A sure sign that the weather's changing is the arrival of fresh singles aiming to be the season-defining hit. And previous title-holder Sabrina Carpenter is throwing her hat back into the ring with "Manchild," a country-influenced ode to the dim men in her life with a little disco thrown into the mix. The video accompanying the release feels like a deliciously overstuffed trailer for an off-the-wall '70s road movie. Ahead of the release of "First Steps" on July 25, Marvel Studios have debuted composer Michael Giacchino's full main theme for the Fantastic Four. Sonically, the track is a mix of bright mid-century retro-futurism and some more spacey synth. Disney is also releasing the theme on a "Galactic Blue" 7-inch LP, which is available for pre-order here. Get your first listen below. A New 007 Lawsuit Setback Has Taken Shape, And I'm Afraid This Could Delay Bond 26 Indefinitely (Again)
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Though we're not seeing much movement from the 007 series on the 2025 movie schedule, there are still some pretty major pieces in play that have kept James Bond 26 on everyone's mind. Unfortunately, one of those developments was a 007 lawsuit posing 'mortal danger' to the franchise at large. Through a new update on the matter, it appears that a swift resolution isn't in the cards any time soon - and the result could be an indefinite pause on what seemed to be an ambitious start to the next era of Bond. Per reporting from The Guardian, the legal case brought forth by property Josef Kleindienst has seen a request from Danjaq, LLC to delay proceedings in the name of building a stronger case to maintain key trademarks. More specifically, the James Bond name, the catchphrase that makes great use of said moniker, and the 00-designation are on the line. As Kleindienst claims that UK and EU copyright law allows those signature elements to be examined 'after five years of 'non-use,'' this is a pretty big deal. Danjaq, LLC is the corporate entity is a vital player in all things 007, as it both co-owns the James Bond copyright (with Amazon-MGM Studios), as well as oversees the merchandising (with EON Productions.) Admittedly Amazon-MGM's supposed plans for Bond 26 feel stymied by this legal action. That, in turn, leaves me with a feeling we could see yet another chapter in the history of James Bond delays. Can you even imagine a movie where James Bond can't even use his name to introduce himself? Failing that, there's no number to fall back on; which already caused some confusion in No Time to Die's reassignment of 007 to Nomi (Lashana Lynch). The potential loss of these trademarks could be the greatest legal hiccup in Bond history since the rights battle over SPECTRE. That gave us some interesting substitutes like Quantum, but also yielded the infamous Never Say Never Again. Even in that case, James Bond was able to use his name, albeit with some stipulations. Not calling an obvious stand in for Blofeld by his name is one thing, but not being able to call James Bond by his own name is a greater disaster. That basically leaves you with something akin to The Simpsons' classic Bond parody (or rather Bont parody) shown below: For a legacy franchise that's trying to move forward into a new chapter, this feels like a nightmare. Without this challenge being handled once and for all, it's assumed that Amazon-MGM Studios and its producing team of Amy Pascal and David Heyman can't truly move forward on a new film. Also, this could be a devastating blow to IO Interactive's Project 007 video game, which is currently in development. But on the bright side, if the team behind an aborted unofficial remake of For Your Eyes Only with Ryan Reynolds still wants in, there may be a way forward... provided they use a different name, of course. As the potential record-setting 007 gap between No Time to Die's 2021 release and Bond 26 continues, the fate of Commander Bond once more hangs in the balance of business deals. So if anyone wants to join me over at the saddest martini bar known as the '007 Waiting Room,' feel free. Though depending on how these legal challenges shake out, we may need to change the name out of safety. How about 'The Tuxedo Room?'
