Luka Jović fired AC Milan into the final of the Italian Cup with a brace in a convincing 3-0 derby win over Inter Milan, which sent his team through 4-1 on aggregate.
Serbia forward Jović doubled his goal tally for the season, with Tijjani Reijnders sealing the tie late on, as Milan fans were given something to shout about in what has been an awful season for the seven-time European champions.
Milan are unbeaten in all five of this season's local derbies, winning the Super Cup final against Inter in January, and Wednesday's win also ended Inter's hopes of repeating the Serie A, Champions League and cup treble won under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
"Jović is working really hard, in particular in the last three or four weeks. He's lost a bit of weight too, which helps," said coach Sérgio Conceição.
"He gives us something that we needed for this match, every forward has their own set of qualities. He doesn't give defenders a lot to work with," he added.
Conceição's side, who sit ninth in Serie A and will almost certainly miss out on Champions League football next season, will likely face Bologna in next month's final in Rome.
Bologna lead Empoli 3-0 ahead of their second leg on Thursday and are set to reach a major tournament final for the first time since last winning the cup in 1974.
"We're happy to be in the final, but we haven't won it yet," added Conceição. "I'm not a different coach to the one from a couple of days ago, and the players aren't any different either. It's not like everything is great now, just like it wasn't all bad before."
Given a rare start, Jović put Milan ahead on the night and in the tie in the 38th minute when he met Alex Jimenez's cross with a thumping header, the nominal away side's first chance of the game.
Federico Dimarco had hit the bar and Lautaro Martínez smashed a great chance over before Jović opened the scoring, and the 27-year-old extended Milan's aggregate lead three minutes after the break.
Jović pounced to poke home from close range after Inter failed to deal with a basic corner, sparking four immediate substitutions from Inter coach Simone Inzaghi which came to nothing.
Instead Reijnders completed a comprehensive win for Milan five minutes from the end when he rolled home with a first-time finish after being slipped in by Rafael Leao.
Elimination at the hands of their local rivals is a big blow to Inter who had genuine ambitions of the treble after booking a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona last week.
But Inter are also level on points with Napoli at the top of Serie A after losing to Bologna at the weekend and could easily end an excellent season empty handed.
Inzaghi's players have a packed and challenging run-in with Champions League chasers Roma visiting the San Siro on Sunday before the first leg of their last-four clash with Barcelona which could yet make or break their campaign. (AFP)

File photo: Reuters Tottenham have hired Brentford's Thomas Frank as their new manager as the Dane replaced the sacked Ange Postecoglou. Frank agreed a three-year contract with Tottenham and becomes the north London club's fourth permanent boss since June 2021. "We are delighted to announce the appointment of Thomas Frank as our new head coach on a contract that runs until 2028," a Tottenham statement said. "In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game," it added. "He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead." Tottenham set their sights on Frank after chairman Daniel Levy axed Postecoglou last week, just 16 days after he won the Europa League final against Manchester United to end the club's 17-year trophy drought. Frank is the 14th permanent manager of Levy's 24-year tenure. Levy made an official approach to Brentford earlier this week, with the deal concluded after Tottenham agreed to allow the Dane to hire his Bees assistant coach Justin Cochrane. Frank's Brentford contract was set to run until 2027, with a reported release clause of about £10 million (US$13.6 million). The 51-year-old led Brentford back to the top flight in 2021 after an absence of 74 years and has established the west London club in the Premier League. Now he will be tasked with lifting Tottenham back among the Premier League's elite. Tottenham will play in the Champions League next season thanks to their Europa League success in Bilbao, where they beat Manchester United 1-0. Tottenham's first European trophy for 41 years delivered on Postecoglou's boast that he always wins silverware in his second season. However, the Australian paid the price for a miserable Premier League season as Tottenham finished 17th after losing 22 of their 38 games. Tottenham finished seven places and 18 points below Frank's Brentford. While Postecoglou was criticised for an overly-attacking game-plan for much of his two-season reign, Frank has been credited with a tactically flexible approach and a deft man-management style. Frank will also bring head of performance Chris Haslam and first-team analyst Joe Newton with him from Brentford, while another assistant coach, Andreas Georgson, arrives from Manchester United. Georgson spent a year at Brentford as a set-piece coach, while Tottenham's technical director Johan Lange worked with Frank at Lyngby in Denmark. Brentford director of football Phil Giles saluted Frank's role in his club's remarkable rise. "From the moment he replaced Dean Smith, he understood what we were trying to build and his wisdom, coaching ability and emotional intelligence have helped transform the club," Giles said. "But it's not just what you see on the pitch," he added. "He forged a special connection with our fans, helped develop and improve players, and was instrumental in implementing the culture that has seen Brentford go from strength to strength." Frank began his coaching career in the youth set-up of the Danish national team before a three-year stint at Brondby. He initially joined Brentford as an assistant coach before stepping to replace Dean Smith seven years ago. After losing out in the 2020 Championship play-off final, Brentford bounced back to win promotion through the play-offs a year later. Since then, the Bees have finished 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th despite consistently selling some of their best players. Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Frank at Brentford. Photo: AFP Netherlands maintained their winning start to European 2026 World Cup qualifying by thrashing Malta 8-0, while their group rivals Poland lost to Finland in a match interrupted due to a medical emergency in the crowd. The results leave Finland top of Group G on seven points, one ahead of the Dutch who have played two matches less. Poland sit third on six points after three played. In Groningen, the Dutch raced into a three-goal lead against their overawed opponents inside the opening 20 minutes. Memphis Depay converted from the spot on nine minutes, before doubling the lead with a rifled finish from the edge of the box seven minutes later. Depay's brace brought the 31-year-old to 50 international goals – level with former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie as the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer. Captain Virgil van Dijk killed the match off as a tie when he stepped onto the ball and arrowed a right-footed finish into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
