Nonprofit ship sets sail for Gaza after drone attack setback
CATANIA (Reuters) -International nonprofit organisation Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) said one of its vessels left the Italian port of Catania on Sunday, heading for Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid, after a previous attempt failed due to a drone attack on a separate ship in the Mediterranean.
The crew of volunteers, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, set sail on the Madleen, carrying barrels of what the group called "limited amounts, though symbolic", of relief supplies.
Another vessel operated by the group, the Conscience, was hit by two drones just outside Maltese territorial waters in early May. FFC said Israel was to blame for the incident. Israel has not responded to requests for comment.
"We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying, because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity," Thunberg told reporters at a conference before the departure.
She added that "no matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the lives being genocised".
FFC said the trip "is not charity. This is a non-violent, direct action to challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes".
The situation in Gaza is the worst since the war between Israel and Hamas militants began 19 months ago, the United Nations said on Friday, despite a resumption of limited aid deliveries in the Palestinian enclave.
Under growing global pressure, Israel ended an 11-week blockade on Gaza, allowing limited U.N.-led operations to resume.
On Monday, a new avenue for aid distribution was also launched - the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation - backed by the United States and Israel, but with which the U.N. and international aid groups have refused to work, saying it is not neutral and has a distribution model that forces the displacement of Palestinians.

Suspect planned to kill all in group he called 'Zionist,' but appeared to have second thoughts
BOULDER, Colo. — A man in Boulder disguised as a gardener who wounded 12 people in an attack on a group holding their weekly demonstration for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza had planned to kill them all but appeared to have second thoughts, according to authorities. Mohamed Sabry Soliman had 18 Molotov cocktails but threw just two during Sunday's attack in which he yelled 'Free Palestine,' police said. He didn't carry out his full plan 'because he got scared and had never hurt anyone before,' police wrote in an affidavit.

Greece and Turkey holiday hotspots rocked by 6.2 magnitude earthquake as TUI issues urgent update
A huge earthquake has rocked the Greek island of Rhodes. The earthquake was felt across the island with tourists reporting hotels were 'violently swaying and shaking', the Mirror reports. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) a quake measuring a magnitude of 6.2 at 2.17am this morning. A nearby earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Marmaris, Turkey, in the early hours of this morning. Over 282 reports have bene made to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) about the earthquake in Marmaris that was measured at 74km deep. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage according to USGS. Holidaymakeres have taken to social media to share how they were awoken by the quake this morning. One person wrote on X: "Woke us up - the hotel room shook violently while we were on holiday in Rhodes. Never felt an earthquake before, so it was a little concerning." Another wrote: "My best friend is out in Rhodes and not long been woken up by a 6+ magnitude earthquake, Is there anymore chance of any other earthquake or repercussions occurring ? Thank you." A message sent by TUI to a Brit tourist currently holidaying in Rhodes reads: "Dear Guests. We would like to inform you that an earthquake occurred at 02.17am with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale. "The epicenter was located approximately 18 kilometres from Rhodes, at a depth of 68 kilometers (42 miles). "Local authorities are currently assessing the situation. At this time, there are no reports of significant damage or injuries. "As a precaution, please remain calm and follow any safety instructions provided by your accommodation or local officials. "Should any specific action be required on your part, rest assured that we will contact you directly with further guidance. Your safety and well-being are our top priority."
