Wave of syringe attacks mar France's street music festival
The interior ministry said 145 victims reported being stabbed with needles across the country, with Paris police reporting 13 cases in the capital.

PARIS - French police have detained twelve suspects after 145 people reported being pricked with syringes during the country's annual street music festival, officials said Sunday.
Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting "unprecedented crowds" in Paris. Before the party, posts on Snapchat and other social media had called for targeting women during the festivities.
The interior ministry said 145 victims reported being stabbed with needles across the country, with Paris police reporting 13 cases in the capital.
Officials did not specify if they were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault.
But at least three people reported feeling unwell, and "Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests," the ministry said.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in three different locations in Paris, prosecutors said.
All three suffered from feeling unwell.
Twelve people suspected of being responsible for the stabbings were arrested, the interior ministry said.
They are believed to have targeted around 50 victims, according to a police source.
Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris.
Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old who was hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen.
Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured. - AFP

UK judge moves Andrew Tate sexual violence trial forward
LONDON: Self-avowed misogynist influencer Andrew Tate who is being sued by four women in a UK court over claims of sexual violence on Wednesday had his trial brought forward. The civil case had been listed for trial in February 2027 but a judge at London's High Court said she was "very keen to get on" with the case and fixed the trial start date for June 22, 2026. "We just need to make this happen, really," High Court judge Christina Lambert said. "It is not in anyone's interests that this case goes into the long grass of 2027," she added. Tate, 38, a former kickboxer and reality TV show contestant, moved to Romania years ago after first starting a webcam business in Britain. He became famous in 2016 when he appeared on the "Big Brother" UK reality television show, but was removed after a controversial video emerged. He then turned to social media platforms to promote his often misogynistic and divisive views on how to be successful. In court documents, one woman claimed Tate "would strangle her or grab her by her throat if she spoke back to him or said anything that he did not like". The documents also alleged that Tate "had weapons, including firearms, which were often pointed at her" and that he had "indicated to her that he would like to kill someone if he could". A lawyer for Tate previously told the court there was a "total denial of wrongdoing" by his client. After the hearing, the four claimants welcomed the judge's decision. "We've already spent years waiting for justice, and so it's of some comfort to hear that Andrew Tate will face these allegations in a court earlier than the original plan of 2027," they said in a statement. Prosecutors seek 15 years in jail for French woman who burned grandfather alive
BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France: French prosecutors on Wednesday requested a 15-year jail term for a woman found guilty of killing her bedridden grandfather by setting fire to his mattress, after appealing a previous sentence they deemed too lenient. In October 2024, a court handed Emilie G., 33, a five-year suspended sentence after she admitted to killing her grandfather, describing it as "an act of love" to end his suffering. But prosecutors appealed against the sentence, arguing she killed the 95-year-old as frustrations piled up in her personal life. "He did not die peacefully. This was not an act of love," said prosecutor Eric Mazaud during an appeal hearing at the Ain Assize Court in the eastern town of Bourg-en-Bresse. "When you love someone, you don't burn them," he said. The victim was found dead from severe burns and smoke inhalation in his bed in August 2020. His granddaughter expressed regret during the appeal hearings which opened on Monday, but was unable to explain why she chose to burn him alive. "He did not have a death worthy of his life... fire is atrocious, it is inhuman," she said on Tuesday. Prosecutors requested a 15-year prison term on appeal -- the same sentence sought in the first trial. A verdict is expected later on Wednesday. During the first trial, Emilie G., who experts said suffered from depression, said she was overwhelmed by caring for her grandfather while raising her children and dealing with a faltering romantic relationship. On the day her partner revealed he had been unfaithful, she poured gasoline on her grandfather's mattress and threw a burning sheet of paper on the bed before fleeing the room. Prosecutor Romain Ducrocq during the first trial argued that Emilie G. killed her grandfather to "exorcise her frustration and multiple failures". But the defendant said that she acted to end her grandfather's suffering, someone she had cared for and viewed as a father figure. She alleges her grandfather asked her to kill him several times including in the month before his death after she found him lying in his own excrement. She said she did not tell other family members. According to a psychiatric report, she was in a "dissociative state" at the time, which was said to "impair her judgment".
