Atomic museum packed with history on Nevada's nuclear testing

Yahoo21-03-2025

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Fun, educational and definitely unique are just some of the ways to describe the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas.
The museum documents the history of nuclear testing at the National Nevada Security Site in the Mojave desert, about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Tests above-ground and below-ground were performed there. The first nuclear test occurred in 1951 and the final test was in 1992.
The exhibits include a replica of the 1950s test dummies used at the site to see what damage they would sustain from a blast.
'It's a fascinating look at how the Atomic Age mixed science with everyday life,' said Joseph Kent, the museum's deputy director.
Those early blasts created an atomic pop culture that impacted television shows, comic books, toys and even led to a prototype car — the 1957 Ford Nucleon — designed by Ford to be powered by nuclear energy. Engineers claimed that it could get 5,000 miles to a charge. Although the car didn't make it to production, Kent said the Nucleon was the inspiration for the nuclear cars in the Fallout video game series.
Atomic Odyssey, is the newest exhibit at the museum and it is a hands-on displays that break down how atoms work, what nuclear reactions do and how atomic energy shapes the world. In a wild throwback to the Cold War, Kent shared the story of when Russians came to Nevada to look at the test site. He said it was part of the 1988 Joint Verification Experiment, where Soviet and U.S. scientists teamed up to check each other's nuclear tests.
The museum is open year-round and offers discounts to locals. More information can be found at this link.

Walton Goggins And Aimee Lou Wood Break Silence On Feud Rumours

Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood have given a joint interview in which they addressed the media scrutiny they've been under in the last few months. The pair were co-stars in the most recent season of The White Lotus, but found themselves at the centre of speculation when it was spotted that they were no longer following one another on Instagram just before the finale aired. In fact, it even appeared that Walton had gone as far as blocking Aimee on the platform, although both parties had still been speaking favourably about one another at the time, most notably in separate social media posts, which were soundtracked by the Fleetwood Mac anthem Silver Springs. Walton then failed to join most of the cast at a viewing party for the White Lotus finale, in which both he and Aimee played pivotal roles. During a new interview with Variety, Walton put his absence down to his busy schedule as he had been filming the new season of Fallout. However, he told Aimee as part of their joint interview: 'I wish I would have been able to watch this with you. It was so cathartic and so painful, and I regret that. I really do.' Walton later added: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me. '[She] is Goldie Hawn. [She] is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be.' 'We care about each other very deeply,' he added. The Emmy nominee also said that he'd chosen not to dispel the feud reports during a now-infamous interview with The Times because he didn't want to 'speak for both of us' when Aimee wasn't present. Similarly, she chose to remain schtum on the 'feud' reports until now because she felt anything she said would be misconstrued, instead opting to 'sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing'. HBO As for his unfollowing Aimee on Instagram, Walton put this down to wanting to put some distance between himself and The White Lotus once the show was over. 'I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea,' he said, apparently beginning to tear up. 'And I knew that that was going to take a while for me, so I let her know, this is what I've gotta do. And she was extremely supportive about that.' It's noted in Variety 's piece that Walton had more of a personal connection to Thailand than most of the rest of the cast, as he went travelling near where The White Lotus was filmed years earlier after his first wife died by suicide. Branding the media furore 'ridiculous', he concluded: 'I'm emotional because we haven't been in the same city to ever talk about this. So for me, this is just so wonderful.' Variety noted that the interview took place on the first weekend of May, shortly before both actors walked the red carpet separately at this year's Met Gala. Since then, Walton's wife Nadia Conners has also spoken out about rumours of an affair between her husband and his White Lotus co-star, which she took in good humour.

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins Deny ‘White Lotus' Feud Rumors

It's been two months since The White Lotus season 3 finale aired, and we finally have an answer to the show's most gripping cliffhanger: Why did Walton Goggins unfollow Aimee Lou Wood on Instagram? The actors, who starred as doomed lovers Rick and Chelsea in the most recent season of HBO's hit show, finally denied their rumored feud in a new joint interview with Variety. 'There is no feud,' Walton insisted. 'I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me.' He continued to praise her talent, comparing her to Goldie Hawn and Meg Ryan. 'She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be,' he said. 'She's special. There is no feud. She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply.' But what about the unfollowing on Instagram? The reposting of the SNL White Lotus sketch that made fun of Aimee's teeth? And the awkward interview where Walton apparently refused to talk about Aimee? There's an answer for all of it. Rumors of a feud were originally kickstarted in April by their White Lotus co-star Jason Isaacs, who suggested that 'friendships were lost' on the set, which then inspired internet sleuths to go look. Soon, fans realized that Walton and Aimee didn't follow each other on Instagram, despite following every other main cast member. It turns out there's a simple explanation for the unfollowing: Walton and Aimee simply don't care about social media! 'Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant,' Aimee told Variety. 'We don't give a shite about Instagram.' As for Goggins, he said that he unfollowed Aimee as a way of letting go of the character of Rick. 'My catharsis in this experience was different than other people's, because of my history in this place. I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea,' he explained. 'And I knew that that was going to take a while for me, so I let her know, this is what I've gotta do. And she was extremely supportive about that.' Walton added that he took a step back from 'everyone' in the cast. 'I haven't spoken to anyone. I couldn't handle it. Judge me or don't. I don't give a fuck what you think. This is my process,' he continued. You might be wondering why, then, Walton didn't feel the need to unfollow the rest of the White Lotus cast. He didn't specifically answer this question, but he did say that he was closest to Aimee throughout production and that he kept his distance from group hangs on set. Make of that what you will. Per the article, Walton was exhausted, working on Fallout, when he saw the White Lotus skit and reposted it without knowing the context. When he found out the next day, he deleted the story because he did not mean to cause any harm. If he did, he said, we'd know. 'If I'm gonna say something, but I'm gonna say it to your face,' he insisted. 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' Walton and Aimee's supposed feud made headlines in May after the actor refused to talk about their relationship in an interview with The Times. After the interviewer, Ed Potton, asked a few more times about Aimee, Walton abruptly ended the interview. He told Variety that he didn't want to speak for Aimee and alleged that the interviewer had rudely asked if he and Aimee had bonded over their teeth. 'What he was insinuating, it was so disgusting. It was so appalling. I was flabbergasted,' he said. Now that the feud rumors have been put to bed, it seems that Walton and Aimee are just as in awe of each other as their gushing social media posts would suggest. They even re-followed each other on Instagram mid-interview. 'It's all so ridiculous,' Walton said of the Instagram drama. 'It's just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for fucking ever.'
