U.S issues travel advisory for Switzerland, one of the world's richest and advanced nations, here are reasons it cited

Time of India22-05-2025

Just as the summer travel season begins, the United States government has issued a new advisory for one of Europe's most popular destinations – Switzerland.
Known for its safety and wealth, the country now comes with a list of warnings that American visitors are advised to take seriously.
The United States State Department has issued a Level 1 travel advisory for Switzerland, advising travellers to take standard precautions, according to the updated travel advisory released on Tuesday.
Why did the U.S. issue a travel alert for Switzerland?
The U.S. Embassy in Bern has advised travellers to read the country security report for Switzerland, sign up for alerts, and prepare for emergencies just like they would when visiting any other nation.
According to the country security report, petty crime, such as pickpocketing, is a major concern, especially in cities like Geneva.

What crimes are most common for tourists?
"The most common types of criminal activity include shoplifting, pickpocketing, petty theft, and larceny," according to the Department of State.
"Transport hubs and tourist destinations are especially prone to these crimes. To reduce risk, use good situational awareness and common sense when handling possessions in public, particularly in larger cities, as per a report by Men's Journal.
The State Department also pointed out that pickpockets frequently operate in pairs, with one robbing the victim while the other actually takes their possessions.

Is there a terrorism threat in Switzerland?
The State Department rated Bern as having a low threat of terrorism and political violence, while Geneva received a medium rating for both situations, but it did not consider kidnapping to be a threat.
Authorities identified a medium threat of terrorism from lone-actor extremists, but the overall risk remains low.
"The country had long avoided the terrorist attacks that have stricken other Western European nations, but extremists have long viewed Switzerland as a place for planning, funding, and providing logistical support for terrorist operations," the department said.
The primary cause of terrorism in Switzerland was spontaneous acts of violence from jihadist-inspired individuals.
According to the department, "lone-actor perpetrators pose a serious risk due to their ability to remain undetected, at times, until operational; their willingness to attack civilians and soft targets; their ability to inflict significant casualties with weapons that do not require specialised knowledge, access, or training; and their unpredictability,' as quoted in a report by Men's Journal.
FAQs
Is it dangerous to visit Switzerland now?
Not at all; Switzerland is still safe. The United States has issued a Level 1 advisory, which simply advises travellers to remain alert.
What should tourists be cautious of?
Most theft is petty, such as pickpocketing, in tourist areas and transportation hubs. Basic precautions are recommended.

Area commander, four members of banned outfit held in Hazaribagh

An area commander and four members of the banned militant group Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) were arrested by police on the night of June 12 during a search operation in Taraheta forest, Jharkhand's Hazaribagh. On June 12, police received information around 9pm that some TSPC members were planning an attack, said Superintendent of Police Anjani Anja. A joint operation was carried out under the leadership of Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Amit Anand, with assistance from the armed forces and the anti-Naxal branches. Police suspected that the arrested individuals are linked to a June 1 incident that took place in Hazaribagh's Keredari area. The TSPC members intercepted and set fire to two trucks near a mining company's site, leaving behind a letter signed by one 'Kaushal ji'. The letter warned of 'consequences' if the companies refused to initiate a dialogue with the group. An SIT was already investigating the case. Police identified one of the arrested individuals as Awadhesh Kumar alias Prashant ji (Palamu district), who is an area commander of the TSPC. Kumar is also named in multiple criminal cases registered at Katkamsandi and Katkamdag police stations. The other four arrested are Aditya Ganjhu, Deven Ganjhu, and Dharam Ganjhu (Chatra); and Rooplal Ganjhu of Masuria (Hazaribagh). Police also recovered one AR-15 M4 American carbine rifle, one magazine, three country-made firearms, a country-made pistol of 7.62 mm, live cartridges of various calibers, nine mobile phones and pamphlets. The delightful old-world dhaba

I had a chance to visit an American diner recently. The skillets consisted of huge portions of hash browns with our choice of eggs. There were options of various types of meat as main and side dishes for the non-vegetarians. For the eggetarians and vegetarians, there was a vegetarian skillet. Unlimited American coffee kept flowing. The price and size of the meal reminded me of our very own once-ubiquitous dhaba. As children, during school holidays, we accompanied our father on his tours to interior towns in Bihar and Jharkhand. Our journey in a closed jeep took us through thick dark jungles such as the Danua and Bhalua jungles near Barhi. There were dhabas strategically situated in various points along the way. A stop at the dhaba was a sojourn in culinary heaven for us. My mother loved the singharas and special chai, and my father loved the ghee roti served with moong dal tadka, raw onion and green chillies. We children loved them all, though not so much the chillies. The food was fresh and hot, and the rotis came straight from the tawa to our plates. We watched the singharas bubble in oil and marvelled at the skill of the chef turning the singharas with consummate ease. Sometimes, they made jalebis, a fascinating process, as the chef squeezed batter into the hot oil with a turn of his wrist, much like a dancer's hand mudra. I tasted Irani chai later in Hyderabad, but the chai at the dhaba was out of this world. It was a rare treat for me, as at home, it was always Bournvita for us. It was interesting to see the other travellers resting on the charpoys spread outside. The truck drivers sometimes talked with our driver who later told us of the various States in India they hailed from. They all universally loved the food. My father liked talking to them in his heavily accented South Indian Hindi. We siblings were afraid they would laugh at him, but they never did. It has been half a century since those travels, but we agree that we have not tasted food more delicious than that at the dhabas there. My mother says she is still looking for those singharas and that special chai. The fragrance of the rotis baking on the tawa and the no-masala dal tadka is fresh in my memory and has pepped me up during some of the more difficult times of my life. Modern-day dhabas do not seem to hold the same charm. Today's youngsters have a wide choice of comfort food such as pizza, donuts, pakoras, ice-cream, and rolls, but I wonder whether these rival the delightful taste of the simple old dhaba fare.

‘No Kings' protests cancelled in Minnesota after targeted shootings of lawmakers

All scheduled 'No Kings' protests across Minnesota were abruptly cancelled Saturday after two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were targeted in separate shootings in what officials are calling a 'politically motivated assassination'.Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home by a man posing as a police officer. Just hours later, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were wounded in a similar attack at their Champlin residence. Authorities say both lawmakers were named in writings found in a fake police SUV used by the Park Police Chief Mark Bruley described the attack as 'brazen' and 'targeted.' The suspect, dressed in a full police-style uniform and driving a vehicle rigged to look like an official squad car, fled after exchanging gunfire with officers at the Hortman residence. The investigators found a manifesto inside the vehicle, listing the names of multiple lawmakers and officials. Several 'No Kings' protest flyers were also found, though State Patrol Colonel Christina Bogojevic stated that no direct threats had been made toward the planned demonstrations. Still, out of an abundance of caution, the protests were cancelled GOVERNOR TIM WALZ CONDEMNS ATTACKMinnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the attack, calling it 'targeted political violence' and urging unity against extremism. 'We must all stand against all forms of political violence,' he said at a press FBI has joined the investigation, with President Trump issuing a White House statement promising full federal support. 'Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States,' he House Speaker Lisa Demuth called the killings 'evil' and urged prayers for the victims and their violence prevention advocate and former US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, herself a survivor of a targeted shooting, said in a statement: 'An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself.'The FBI is assisting in the search for the suspect, who fled on foot after firing at police and abandoning a fake squad car. Inside, officers found a manifesto and a list of about 70 potential targets, including abortion providers, pro-abortion rights advocates, and lawmakers from Minnesota and other states, according to CNN analyst John Miller. Security has been tightened across the Twin Cities metro, and a shelter-in-place advisory remains in effect.(With inputs from Associated Press)
