AI use in music production raises copyright, authencity issues

The Sun21-04-2025

PETALING JAYA: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in music production has raised questions about the authenticity of works and the protection of copyright.
Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) director-general, Kamal Kormin, said that the adoption of AI also challenges the role and contributions of creative talents within the industry.
'One of the key issues is the question of intellectual property ownership in the context of AI. Who actually owns it? Traditionally, intellectual property refers to original creations by humans, whether in the form of writing, music, design or inventions.
'However, when AI is used to produce content either automatically or semi-automatically, it raises a significant question: do the rights belong to the algorithm's creator, the user of the system or the AI itself?' he said when officiating the 2025 National Intellectual Property Day here today.
Also present were MyIPO deputy director-general (Management) Sheikh Arifin Sheikh Mohd Noor and deputy director-general (Strategic and Technical) Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff.
To protect creative works, Kamal emphasised that copyright laws must evolve alongside technological advancements.
'The Copyright Act 1987 is undergoing a thorough review to ensure it provides adequate protection for creative professionals in line with today's technological era,' he said.
Kamal also highlighted that MyIPO has implemented various initiatives to raise awareness of intellectual property protection among music creators, such as organising webinars and collaborating with local music associations.
In conjunction with National Intellectual Property Day, he invited all industry professionals, such as songwriters, singers and musicians, to attend seminars and podcasts held as part of the five-day celebration that begins today.
The theme of the celebration, Muzik Kita, Milik Kita (Our Music, Our Property), focuses on raising awareness about the economic, cultural and emotional value of music, emphasising that every musical work created should be protected as legitimate intellectual property.

#SHOWBIZ: 'Thug Life' poised to steal the show

AFTER almost four decades, Tamil cinema giants Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam have reunited for 'Thug Life', a gangster epic that opened in cinemas nationwide yesterday. (June 5). Renowned for their 1987 classic 'Nayagan', the two return with a film that blends stylised action with deep emotional stakes, aiming to resonate with both long-time fans and a new generation of moviegoers. BROTHERHOOD AND BETRAYAL 'Thug Life' tells the story of brothers Sakthivel (played by Kamal) and Manickam (Joju George), who rise from poverty to rule the criminal underworld. Their bond is tested when Sakthivel rescues a mysterious boy. The empire begins to fracture as this act of compassion triggers deep insecurities in Manickam, leading to an assassination attempt on Sakthivel. In retaliation, Sakthivel returns with a mission to dismantle the very world he helped build. STAR POWER The film also stars Silambarasan TR, who shares screen space with Kamal Haasan for the first time, lending fire and flair to a pivotal role in the power struggle that unfolds between rival gangs. Meanwhile, Trisha Krishnan plays a woman caught between family loyalty and survival, emotionally anchoring the film. Joju, fresh from a lauded performance in Karthik Subburaj's neo-noir 'Retro', portrays Manickam with layered menace and moral erosion. With Mani at the helm, the film is co-written by him and Kamal, and produced by Red Giant Movies and Raaj Kamal Films International. For Malaysian audiences, DMY Creation — founded by Datuk Mohamed Yusoff — is the film's distributor bringing it to the big screen. CONTEMPORARY APPEAL Speaking at a recent fan meet-and-greet at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Kamal said the title 'Thug Life', popularised by the late American rapper Tupac Shakur, was chosen to reflect both the film's theme and its contemporary appeal to the Gen Z audience. "The title speaks to the younger generation. But at its heart, this is still a story of ideology, loyalty and consequence," he said. He also praised the contributions of his Malaysian fanbase, calling them an extension of his family. "My love and respect for my Malaysian fans has never diminished. "In my 44-year career, their support has always been close to my heart. You all are just like my extended family who live here, as compared to those in India." He said 'Thug Life' was built with cutting-edge tools, including AI-assisted script development, de-ageing effects and advanced VFX. While the AI-enhanced writing tools helped polish character arcs and complex moral dilemmas, the de-ageing technology seamlessly renders Kamal into past timelines, offering a spectral reminder of Velu Naicker from 'Nayagan'. Visual effects, crowd simulation and real-time lighting engines are set to make 'Thug Life' a spectacle of cinematic realism meets stylised grandeur. "As technicians, we've evolved. We wanted to go beyond 'Nayagan' and embrace new technologies to meet today's audience expectations," he said. A.R. Rahman's score for the film has been described as emotionally rich, sonically unforgettable and musically bold, uniquely blending nostalgia with a fresh, new sound. PUSHING BOUNDARIES Kamal acknowledged that comparisons to 'Nayagan' were inevitable, but expressed confidence in the film's merit. "It is always a challenge to live up to the success of 'Nayagan'. But with 'Thug Life', Mani and I believe we have pushed our boundaries further. We expect it to surpass the 'Nayagan' we worked on four decades ago," he assured fans. "The demography has expanded, and we, as technicians, I as an actor, and he (Mani) as a director, have evolved over time. "Our first challenge was always to surpass the stupendous success of 'Nayagan'." Reaffirming his commitment to loyal fans, he said: "Ultimately, it comes down to the fans. Their love made us who we are, and we hope they'll embrace this film the same way. "We believe we have upped the game with 'Thug Life'. It is our work, love and respect for our work, our industry and the fans. "We hope fans will like it as much for the effort we have put in. It is now in their hands to judge our work." With its ambitious blend of action, emotion, and technical innovation, 'Thug Life' is poised to be a significant film, potentially marking a new milestone for its creators and the Tamil film industry.

Kamal Haasan is open to filming in M'sia as he arrives in KL to promote new film

Kamal Haasan is happy to present his latest movie 'Thug Life' to his Malaysian fans. Photo: LOW BOON TAT/The Star Indian actor and politician Kamal Haasan is in Kuala Lumpur today (May 31) to promote his latest movie, Thug Life , which is set to hit cinemas on June 5. Speaking to the media at a hotel in KL earlier this afternoon, the 70-year-old described the film as 'a treat' he has prepared for his Malaysian fans. 'We worked hard on this 'child,' which I am now handing over to you,' he said. Thug Life reunites Kamal with director Mani Ratnam after 38 years. Their last collaboration was the 1987 classic Nayakan . Indian media has dubbed Thug Life a 'spiritual sequel' to that film, after Kamal said it was a peace offering to fans who have long awaited their reunion. Co-written by Kamal and Mani, Thug Life is set in the criminal underworld, where brothers Sakthivel and Manickam rule. But things begin to shift when one of them rescues a young boy – triggering insecurity in the other. When an assassination attempt is made on Sakthivel, he sets out to destroy the very family he once built. The film also stars Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan and Joju George. The award-winning actor – whose notable works include Hey Ram , Indian , Vikram and Vishwaroopam – said his character in Thug Life is someone who fights with everything he has. 'That makes him more dangerous than someone with a sword – because he is someone who has nothing to go back to. The battlefield is his home now. He'll see the battle through to the end, live or die,' Kamal said. When asked whether he'd be interested in filming in Malaysia again, Kamal shared that he has shot scenes here in the past and is open to doing so in the future. 'I've come here many times. I have many friends in Malaysia. And I think we share more than just culture and language,' he added. Besides the press conference, Kamal is also scheduled to make a special appearance at a fan meet-and-greet at MyTown Kuala Lumpur later this evening. Perodua files trademark for ‘QV-E' name and logo, hints at debut of first EV by end 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Perodua has recently filed a trademark application for the QV-E name and logo with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). Given the details included in the MyIPO listings, it seems quite possible that QV-E might be the name of Perodua's first EV. First noted by local automotive site Funtasticko, the application for the QV-E name and logo was filed on 21 March 2025 under two classifications. One of them being class 12, which covers electric cars as well as EVs with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), EV charging connector types, EV battery, and EV's electric motor. Perodua has also filed its application for class 37, which includes EV charging stations, EV home chargers, and EV portable chargers. When we went through MyIPO database earlier today, the application status for both the name and logo was noted as 'Under Formality Validation'. As captured on the MyIPO database on May 30, 2025. Perodua has filed the QV-E name before Interestingly enough, this is not the first time that Perodua has submitted the QV-E name to MyIPO. Back in late June 2024, the national automaker submitted the name but with a different arrangement – Qve – to the agency alongside Ace and Pacer. As captured on the MyIPO database on May 30, 2025. Just like QV-E, all three names were filed under classes 12 and 37. However, only Ace has been officially trademarked, as noted in the MyIPO Journal batch 43/2024, which was published on 7 November last year. Even then, the Ace trademark only applies to class 37 but not class 12. At the same time, our search also showed that Perodua has yet to file a logo for the Ace name. What do we know about the Perodua EV so far? During the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2025, Perodua has unveiled the latest prototype of its upcoming EV albeit in a half-cut form. Nevertheless, the President and CEO of Perodua, Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said that this prototype is very close to the production version. He also revealed that the Perodua EV is currently in the final stage of homologation, and pilot production is expected to take place between September and October. The company is confident that the EV will be ready to be launched by the end of 2025. For now, the specs remained the same as per what Perodua has revealed before. This includes an LFP battery from CATL with 50kWh-ish of capacity, 400km range (NEDC), and 0-100km/h timing of under 7 seconds. It has also been mentioned that the EV takes around 8 hours to be fully charged via AC charging. As for DC charging, 30 minutes is enough to get the battery to go from 30 per cent to 80 per cent. Zainal also said that the upcoming Perodua EV can hit a top speed of 165km/h, while it will also feature ADAS L2 capability and is designed to meet the 5-star ANCAP classification. As you can see from the images, the new EV will also feature a fastback design, which is skewed towards the lower B-segment. The CEO has also confirmed that the Perodua EV will indeed be offered through a battery leasing service. This will allow the company to offer the new EV for under RM80,000. Customers can also purchase the car by cash or bank loan, and then sign up for the battery leasing separately. They can also choose to purchase both the EV and the battery outright, although details regarding the purchase and leasing arrangements are still under discussion. However, the company will not be implementing battery swapping service at this juncture. That being said, Zainal pointed out that customers can have the high-voltage battery within the Perodua EV changed in just 30 minutes at the service centre if there is any issue with it. Perodua EV as envisioned by automotive artist Theottle, based on the latest prototype. Zainal also pointed out that customers who purchase the battery outright have to pay for a new replacement battery themselves, if needed, once the eight-year warranty is over. On the other hand, customers who signed up for the leasing service will get the battery replacement for free as long as they retain the subscription. — SoyaCincau
