Films Addressing Oct. 7 Aftermath Win Berlin Jewish Film Festival
Two films that engage directly with the experiences of the October 7 attacks and their aftermath took top honors at the 2025 Jewish Film Festival Berlin Brandenburg (JFBB), Germany's largest Jewish film festival.
Of Dogs and Men, a docudrama from Israeli director Dani Rosenberg, shot at the Nir Oz kibbutz just weeks after the attacks, won the Gershon Klein Feature Film Award, the JFFB's top prize, with the jury praising the movie's 'courageous gesture' of choosing to film in a war zone and its artful blending of fiction and documentary storytelling. The jury also highlighted Ori Avinoam's lead performance as a teenage girl who, after narrowly escaping the attack, returns to the kibbutz to search for her lost dog.

The Gershon Klein Documentary Film Award went to Holding Liat by U.S. filmmaker Brandon Kramer, which chronicles the experience of a family whose daughter and son-in-law were kidnapped to Gaza on October 7. The jury described the film as 'a story of parenthood, perseverance, and politics,' underscoring its focus on private grief amid public crisis.
A Special Mention in the documentary category was given to The Belle from Gaza, directed by Yolande Zauberman.
Zvi Landsman received the Intercultural Dialogue Award for Jacob De Haan: A Voice Out of Time, a portrait of the late Dutch Jewish writer, journalist and noted anti-Zionist who was persecuted in his lifetime for his homosexuality and finally assassinated by a Zionist paramilitary organization. The jury lauded the film for its 'quiet power and lyrical depth' in exploring identity, belief, and historical memory.
The Newcomer Award was presented earlier in the week to Israeli director Tom Nesher for her debut feature Come Closer, a portrait of two women navigating grief and hidden desire.
The 31st JFFB, held for the first time in May, was a resounding public success, with sold-out screenings and packed houses for the week-long festival.
'We've received a lot of positive feedback for our diverse program selection, the atmosphere in the cinemas was excellent, and the conversations between filmmakers presenting their work at the JFBB and the audience were extremely engaging,' said JFBB managing director Andreas Stein. 'The festival is steadily evolving into a place of exchange for everyone interested in Jewish life in Germany and around the world.'

Mozenter, in turn, filed a petition in Florida state court over the weekend to remove her as co-trustee and personal representative of the estate. Jimmy Buffett died in 2023 following a four-year battle with Merkel cell skin cancer. After initially pursuing a career as a country singer, he found success in the early '70s when he scored his first record contract and later adopted the laid-back beach-bum persona he's most recognized for today. Mainstream attention followed the release of his sixth album, which included hit track 'Margaritaville,' which spawned a sprawling hospitality company partially owned by the trust. When Jimmy Buffett died, most of his assets were held in or transferred to a trust for his wife. A month later, Jane Buffett asked Mozenter how much money he expected her to receive but was allegedly stonewalled for over a year, the lawsuit alleges. She ultimately hired her own counsel to press for the information. When Mozenter responded earlier this year, Jane Buffett was told that the trust's $275 million in assets would net her less than $2 million anually, she says. Mozenter allegedly acknowledged that Margaritaville, which the trust owns 20 percent of, had paid out roughly $14 million over the prior 18 months but that he decided against including any estimate of future distributions from the company in his analysis of future income. Margaritaville 'continues to evaluate future business opporutnities and how they deploy existing liquid assets,' Mozenter told Jane Buffett, according to the complaint. If the estimates are correct, the lawsuit claims that Mozenter, whose firm is paid $1.7 million annually to oversee the trust, is 'either not competent to administer the trust or unwilling to act in Mrs. Buffett's best interests.' Also at issue: Mozenter pushing Jane Buffett to approve his request that Jeffrey Smith be retained as counsel for cotrustees. She takes issue with Smith accusing her of breaching her fiduciary duty to the trust by suggesting that it rely on Irvin Azoff, Jimmy Buffett's longtime music manager, to negotiate an agreement with a production company over a planned documentary about the singer. The tipping point came when his firm sent her a voluminous draft of the estate's tax returns and asked her to provide any comments within three days, the lawsuit alleges. Smith, who has since resigned as counsel for the trust, allegedly later threatened to investigate her for defaming Mozenter. Additionally, the petition targets Mozenter transferring property that allegedly should've been left to Jane Buffett personally to the estate. This includes properties in New York, Florida and St. Barthélemy island. Mozenter didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Sean Penn dubs Hegseth ‘Chief Petty Officer' for effort to strip Harvey Milk's name from Navy ship
Sean Penn, who played Harvey Milk on the big screen, is ripping Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for reportedly ordering the Navy to strip an oil ship of its name honoring the gay rights activist. 'I've never before seen a Secretary of Defense so aggressively demote himself to the rank of Chief PETTY Officer,' Penn said in a Wednesday statement to The Hollywood Reporter. According to a memorandum from the Navy secretary's office stated that plans were in the works to rename the oiler USNS Harvey Milk. 'Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all DOD installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief's priorities, our nation's history, and the warrior ethos,' chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement about the move, which pointedly came at the beginning of Pride Month. 'Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete,' Parnell said. Penn won an Academy Award for taking on the title role in the 2008 film 'Milk.' The first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California when he became a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Milk was assassinated in 1978. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who also took home an Oscar for his work on 'Milk,' called Hegseth's order 'yet another move to distract and to fuel the culture wars that create division.' Calling Milk a 'civil rights icon,' Black told The Hollywood Reporter, 'That's not going to change. Renaming a ship isn't going to change that.' 'These guys are idiots,' the scribe said, adding that Hegseth 'does not seem like a smart man, a wise man, a knowledgeable man. He seems small and petty.' Mikey Madison Replaces Sydney Sweeney in A24 Edgar Allan Poe Movie
is being eyed to star in another project after her Oscar win for Anora. Madison won the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance as the titular character in Sean Baker's Anora, which was released in 2024. Since then, it was announced she will star in a new movie titled Reptilia that comes from director Alejandro Landes Achavarría. Now, Madison is in talks to star in The Masque of the Red Death, a reimagining of an Edgar Allan Poe story that comes from A24 and Charlie Polinger. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Madison would play twin sisters in The Masque of the Red Death. The story 'sees a mad prince take in the noble class into his castle while a plague devastates the peasantry.' One of those entering the castle is a 'long-lost twin' who then enters a 'decadent world of orgies, opium, power schemes, revenge, and decapitations.' Sydney Sweeney was previously going to star in the movie; however, she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The Masque of the Red Death is expected to begin production in either late 2025 or early 2026. The Masque of the Red Death will be Poling's second feature film following The Plague. That movie held its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month, stars Joel Edgerton, and was met with positive reviews from critics. A wide release date has not yet been set. Prior to starring in Anora, Madison played Maxine 'Max' Fox in FX's Better Things, which premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons. She has also starred in movies such as 2018's Monster, 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and 2022's Scream, among other titles. A release date for The Masque of the Red Death has not yet been announced.
