As expected, the Dallas Mavericks have denied the New York Knicks' request to speak with Jason Kidd about becoming their next head coach, according to The Stein Line's Marc Stein and ESPN's Shams Charania. This comes on the heels of the Knicks getting rejected by the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves to talk to Ime Udoka and Chris Finch, respectively. Advertisement New York is seeking a replacement for the recently fired Tom Thibodeau, who helped lead the franchise to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years. The Kidd rumblings began last week, but the belief all along was that the Mavericks wouldn't grant the Knicks' request. Still, there were some rumblings that kept the door open for a move. ESPN's Tim MacMahon wouldn't totally dismiss the possibility out of hand, even though he said Kidd wasn't necessarily looking for a way out of Dallas. MacMahon noted some issues Kidd has had with recent Mavericks decisions. ESPN's Brian Windhorst also claimed 'mutual interest' between Kidd and the Knicks. This sentiment made sense given Kidd played for New York and coached Knicks star Jalen Brunson when he was in Dallas. But now it looks like Kidd will indeed stay with the Mavericks, unless he makes a big stink and demands out. There's little evidence that will happen, though, with Dallas just recently hiring Jay Triano to Kidd's coaching staff. If Kidd ultimately wants to stay put (and maybe gets a contract extension out of it?), the Knicks will have to move on. What's next for the Knicks? It's interesting that the Knicks fired Thibodeau with an apparent initial plan to go after coaches entrenched in good jobs already. New York had to know there was little chance of hiring one of these guys away, but perhaps James Dolan, Leon Rose and Co. wanted to simply try the pie-in-the-sky route first before moving on to other candidates. Advertisement It doesn't seem like college legends such as Jay Wright, Rick Pitino and Dan Hurley are interested. Michael Malone and Taylor Jenkins were both fired at the tail end of this regular season and could be options, with Malone a popular name bandied about given his championship resume. Mike Brown is another coach who was fired this season who could be a candidate. Stephen A. Smith tried to start up the Mark Jackson hype train, but that's almost certainly not going to happen. Could Johnnie Bryant wind up being the guy? Firing Thibodeau to hire a first-time head coach for a title push would be bold, but Bryant was Thibodeau's associate head coach from 2020-24 before joining Kenny Atkinson with the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. Bryant finished second to Jordan Ott for the Phoenix Suns' head coaching job. It's hard to believe the Knicks don't have a legitimate backup plan in mind, so we'll see where they turn to next after this Jason Kidd rejection. The 2025 WCWS between the University of Texas and Texas Tech University shattered previous viewership and attendance records, marking a milestone for the NCAA softball event. The previous record was set in 2021. Game 3 of the championship series drew attention as Texas claimed its first national title with a 10-4 win over Texas Tech. That matchup attracted 2.4 million viewers, setting a new high for an NCAA softball game and breaking the previous record of 2.3 million set in 2007 during the Game 3 battle between Arizona and Tennessee. Games 1 and 2 of this year's championship series also set new highs for their rounds, each bringing in 2.1 million viewers. Overall, World Series viewership increased by 24% compared to the previous year, reflecting a growing audience for college softball and women's sports as a whole. The 2025 title series captured attention for several reasons. Texas and Texas Tech played in the final after each knocked off Oklahoma — which had previously claimed four consecutive national titles. In addition, Texas Tech's ace pitcher NiJaree Canady, who secured two NIL deals worth over $1 million this season, garnered praise from Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chief's star quarterback, as Canady led Mahomes' alma mater to the championship series, where the Red Raiders ultimately fell to the Longhorns. Mouhamed Faye: Senegalese center withdraws from 2025 NBA draft Senegalese center Mouhamed Faye is withdrawing from the 2025 NBA draft and evaluating his options for next season, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. Faye averaged nine points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks on 65.3% shooting from the field in 47 games with Reggio Emilia in the Italian League last season. He scored in double figures 21 times, including a season-high 20 points and nine rebounds on Feb. 1. The 6-foot-10 standout tested the predraft process after completing measurement testing earlier this month, registering a 7-foot, 4 1/4-inch wingspan. He also completed a private workout with the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Faye emerged as one of the top performers this month at the 2025 adidas Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy. He was named to the All-Tournament Team, averaging seven points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in three scrimmages at the annual scouting event, featuring players from across the world. The 20-year-old was considered a potential second-round pick this year, given his scoring ability down low and rim protection. He can rebound at a high level and clean up the offensive glass with his energy and high motor, averaging 2.4 boards on that end of the court. Faye is now expected to weigh his options for next season, either in the EuroLeague or the NCAA. He should be a player to watch as a possible draft pick in the 2026 NBA draft.
