Blood Worm Moon: What to know about March's total lunar eclipse, full moon
Following February's "planetary parade," another astronomical phenomenon will light up the night sky soon — a total lunar eclipse.
Total lunar eclipses cause the moon to appear a striking red color, and occur only when the moon is full and aligning perfectly with the Earth and sun. Americans haven't seen a total lunar eclipse in almost three years.
Due to the moon's eerie, color-shifted appearance during total lunar eclipses, these full moons are often nicknamed "blood moons." With the eclipse approaching, here's what to know about total lunar eclipses, including how to view the next one.
The total lunar eclipse will be visible throughout the U.S. on the night of March 13 into 14.
The website Time and Date predicts the moon will complete all of the eclipse phases in 6 hours, 3 minutes.
For U.S. residents, here's a schedule of the eclipse from start to beginning, according to NASA:
11:57 p.m. EST: you can see the eclipse starting when the penumbral phase begins as the moon enters the outer part of the shadow and begins to subtly dim.
1:09 a.m.: A partial eclipse begins as the moon enters Earth's umbra and starts to darken. To the naked eye, the moon should look like a bite is being taken out of the lunar disk.
2:26 a.m.: Totality occurs when the entire moon is under the umbra. This is when the reddish hues of the "blood moon" will be on display.
3:31 a.m.: As the moon exits the umbra, the red color will fade and another bite-like display, this time on the other side of the moon, will appear.
6 a.m.: The entire process should end by this time as the moon slowly exits the Earth's penumbra.
According to NASA, another total lunar eclipse won't be visible in the U.S. until March 2026.
"Blood moon" is a nickname given to total lunar eclipses. The process that produces the red or orangish glow is the same that makes our sky blue and our sunsets red, according to NASA.
As sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere, it is refracted toward the surface.
Because blue light has a shorter wavelength and scatters relatively easily, that's why our sky appears in that color most of the time. Reddish light, which travels more directly in the air, manifests to ground observers during sunrises and sunsets when the sun is near the horizon and its incoming light travels at a longer, low-angle path through Earth's atmosphere.
That's similar to what's happening on the moon during a total lunar eclipse when sunlight is once again refracted towards the surface of the fully eclipsed moon. Even though Earth blocks sunlight from directly reaching moon during a total lunar eclipse, our planet's atmosphere still bends sunlight to indirectly light up the lunar surface.
"It's as if all the world's sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon," NASA explains.

March's full moon, the Blood Worm Moon, will reach peak illumination at 2:55 a.m. on Friday, March 14.
The last full moon, February's Snow Moon, was at peak illumination at 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
The name of March's full moon highlights the transition from winter to spring. The Old Farmer's Almanac explains that it was originally thought that the name referred to earthworms that appear as the soil warms. However, during Captain Jonathan Carver's visit to the Naudowessie (Dakota) and other Native American tribes in the 1790s, he wrote that the name Worm Moon refers to a different sort of "worm" - beetle larvae - which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.
Previous reporting by the Hendersonville Times-News said that the 12 full moons each year are named by Native American tradition. In the same article, UNC Asheville Associate Professor of Astronomy Britt Lundren reminded readers that, when sharing the titles of the monthly moons, it's important to remember the cultural diversity of tribes in the U.S. This diversity means that there are multiple names for each of the full moons every year.
"Each tribe has a close relationship with the land, and their moon names will reflect the seasonal changes unique to their environments," Lundren said.
Alternative moon names refer to animal activity in March, weather and other natural phenomena. The Almanac lists:
Eagle Moon, Goose Moon (Algonquin, Cree)
Crow Comes Back Moon (Northern Ojibwe)
Sugar Moon (Ojibwe)
The Wind Strong Moon (Pueblo)
The Sore Eyes Moon (Dakota, Lakota, Assiniboine)
Here's a list of the full moon names for 2025, courtesy of the Old Farmer's Almanac:
January - Wolf Moon
February - Snow Moon
March - Worm Moon
April - Pink Moon
May - Flower Moon
June - Strawberry Moon
July - Buck Moon
August - Sturgeon Moon
September - Corn Moon
October - Hunter Moon
November - Beaver Moon
December - Cold Moon

Sen. Rick Scott urges Trump to relocate NASA headquarters to Florida
On Tuesday, Senator Rick Scott made a pitch to relocate NASA Headquarters from D.C. to Florida's Space Coast. He sent this letter, signed by the entire Florida Delegation, to the Trump Administration asking the President to consider the move. But this afternoon, NASA Watch Founder Keith Cowing told me it's unlikely. He told us, 'I've read the letter, and everybody signed it. Who's a Republican from Florida. They want to move with the Florida because a lot of space people work there. That are isolated from the political environment in DC. Okay, well, you have a big political environment down there. So, I own the lobbyists. Well, they'll just set up new offices. It'll take years.' In his letter, said the lease on Headquarters is expiring, and there's a 500-million plan for a new facility in the National Capitol Region. Scott says Space Florida has build to suit options. He called the state the undisputed leader in space operations and talked about leveraging a world-class workforce. Dr. Don Platt, an Associate Professor of Space Systems at Florida Tech said, 'We do have to remember that the people that work in NASA headquarters are people that interface with Capitol Hill. They interface with budgets, national space policy. They do not build rocket engines. They do not program software. Not engineers, they're more likely to be someone with a business background or a master's in management or finance or any of those areas.' Platt also said that if the Trump administration really was contemplating an HQ move for NASA, several states would be vying for that prize. Scott's letter follows the introduction of the CAPE Canaveral Act earlier this year. Scott co-sponsored the bill, which calls for the relocation of NASA headquarters from D.C. to Brevard County. 5 Drinks High in Magnesium, Say Dietitians
Magnesium plays a direct role in more than 300 enzymatic processes in the body, from brain function to muscle contractions to energy production and more. Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN, explains that, despite its critical nature, unfortunately, most of us do not get enough magnesium in our diets. 'Magnesium is an electrolyte that plays a role in blood pressure regulation, muscle and nerve function, protein synthesis, and bone cell regeneration,' says London. 'While its role in the body is crucial — it's involved in hundreds of chemical reactions in the body! — it's estimated that about half of Americans aren't consuming enough of it.' There are lots of supplements and health products that can boost your magnesium intake and help support these vital life processes. Pureboost, for example, is an all-natural energy drink that boasts an impressive 25% of the recommended daily magnesium intake. There are also electrolyte mixes and drinks, like this one from Protekt and this canned watermelon water Mela Water, both of which feature magnesium, potassium, and sodium without added sugars. On the other end of the spectrum, there are recovery drinks like Nuun Rest, and relaxation supplements like neuroSleep, which promote natural rest and recovery with magnesium. While these kinds of supplements aid in magnesium intake, London says whole foods and natural dietary sources are still important because they provide the best format for metabolization. 'While dietary supplements can be useful as exactly that — to supplement, not replace, dietary intake — food sources of magnesium are the most biologically efficient source and have the added benefit of providing additional nutrients that your body needs for you to feel your best,' explains London. Here are five drinks high in magnesium you probably already have at home that can help you get more of this mineral into your diet. Related: Time for a spot of tea and a boost of magnesium. A 2021 study in Molecules concluded that the antioxidant activity of tea is related to the presence of magnesium and potassium. Of the teas studied, green tea was shown to have the highest concentration of both phenolic compounds and magnesium, and it also presented the most antioxidant activity. While supplement powders and sports drinks often do include magnesium, naturally occurring magnesium is typically a better choice. Grapefruit and orange juice both feature about 6% of the recommended daily value of magnesium, making them an excellent option to include in your regular diet. Just be sure to choose full juice options with no added sugars. Jaclyn London explains that fruit juices provide more bang for the buck than sports drinks. 'For optimizing your intake of magnesium, a 100% fruit juice without added sugar will provide more per serving and provide a wider variety of vitamins and minerals from the fruit itself,' she says. Also in the juice category, prune juice provides 30 milligrams of magnesium per cup, or about 8% of the daily recommended value, bringing prune juice in slightly higher than its citrus juice counterparts. Additionally, prune juice features fiber, sorbitol, and potassium, making it a digestive-friendly choice. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate are both good sources of magnesium; however, for a true magnesium density, consider something like raw cacao, which is thought to be among the richest sources of magnesium on the planet. This hot chocolate recipe stars cacao powder and maple syrup, a delicious and cozy choice to keep you warm all winter. Another great addition for colder months, bone broth features a slew of vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect choice for savory sipping. Kristen Carli, MS, RD, explains that bone broth provides many critical nutrients. 'Because bone broth is made from animal bones, it is high in magnesium, potassium, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, and more.' Tiny fragment of asteroid giving Field Museum scientists a glimpse 4.6 billion years into the past
The Field Museum is the new temporary home to a tiny piece of pristine asteroid. The fragment of the asteroid Bennu, on loan from NASA, won't be on display for visitors, but will give scientists the chance to study an asteroid sample uncontaminated by Earth's atmosphere. A tiny, black fragment might not seem exciting, until a scientist explains it's a specimen from space. "It's an honor of a lifetime to be able to study this sample," said Field Museum curator Dr. Philipp Heck. How did Heck feel when the little rock first arrived at the museum and he held the vial containing the sample? "It was amazing. I was looking forward to that moment for a long time," he said. NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission was planned decades ago. In 2016, a spacecraft launched. In 2018, it arrived at Bennu, a near-Earth asteroid as wide as the Sears Tower is tall. The mission collected pieces of the asteroid and brought them back to Earth in 2023. "This is the first U.S. mission that sends a spacecraft to the asteroid and brings a sample back to Earth," said University of Chicago graduate student Yuke Zheng, who is part of the OSIRIS-REx sample analysis team. "It's a tiny, dark, black fragment that is fragile, so we want to protect it very carefully." She'll use the museum's scanning electron microscope to get an up-close look at a tiny sample of Bennu. "What struck me is how dark the sample is. I had never seen such a dark sample," Heck said. The fragment is like a time capsule, taking scientists back 4.6 billion years. "We believe Bennu contains part of the ingredients for life, and part of the ingredients of the formation of Earth," Heck said. Suddenly, a fragment at the bottom of a vial can have you pondering your place in the universe. "I've never studied a pristine sample from an asteroid," Heck said.
