Ikea's first-ever rewards program could help you earn a discount on your next piece of furniture
Ikea just debuted its first-ever rewards program for customers in the U.S., and it could mean a major discount on your next plate of Swedish meatballs—or even a price cut on a new vintage-inspired piece of furniture.
The rewards program launches today, and it allows shoppers to accrue points for a range of actions and then redeem them for various discounts. The rewards are a free add-on to Ikea Family, the store's existing loyalty program (which is also free to join and currently boasts around 24 million members). Any current members of Ikea Family will automatically be enrolled in the rewards program, and new members who sign up will start earning points automatically.
Like most rewards programs, the points system is designed to give shoppers a feel-good boost every time they interact with the Ikea brand. For a company that thrives on cultivating a dedicated fan base through frequent product drops, a store layout designed to cultivate an experience, and plenty of nostalgic callbacks, it's a move that feels like it's been a long time coming.
New system 'reflects how consumers expect to shop'
Currently, members of Ikea Family gain access to a few benefits including reduced delivery fees, discounts on certain products, complimentary in-store beverages, and free in-store workshops. According to Nicole King, customer engagement and loyalty manager at Ikea U.S., the new rewards are meant to 'recognize and add more value' for this core set of Ikea devotees. The U.S. will join Ikea stores in Portugal, Australia, and Italy, which have already introduced the rewards program to shoppers.
'We are working to create a more accessible and convenient retail experience for our customers,' King says. 'Meeting them with a rewards offer that allows them to earn points for interacting with Ikea reflects how consumers expect to shop today.'
How the Ikea rewards points work
There are a variety of ways that members can earn points. To start, every dollar spent online and in person equals 1 point; sharing a gift registry earns 10; and logging into an online account or saving a wish list scores 25. Bigger actions like attending an Ikea event, creating an Ikea Family profile, or making a gift registry garner 50 points.
As these points tally up, they can then be redeemed for a range of perks—though it might take some time, or a lot of aspirational online shopping, to earn anything substantial. At 65 points, members can grab free food at the Ikea Restaurant and Bistro; 175 points allows for a $5 discount on product purchases. And starting at 350 points and more, members can receive $10 off delivery. Beyond 350 points, King says, other potential earnings could include $20 off a product or delivery and $50 off an assembly service.
'Rewards from Ikea Family is based on helping customers bring their ideas to life throughout the journey of dreaming, planning, and implementing their projects,' King explains. 'It's the first step in redefining how we work with loyalty and member engagement in order to enable and sustain a lifetime value for both members and Ikea.'
The new program won't exactly reinvent the wheel, but it might just help draw Ikea's cult following even closer.

IKEA's new store concept makes its way to this state
I remember the first time I walked into an IKEA store. I was amazed by the vast offering, but a bit annoyed by its layout - how it forces you to walk through the whole store and look at everything. I was annoyed only for one reason - I didn't have time for it, as this was supposed to be just a short stop on the way to somewhere else. Rushing through an IKEA store is no fun, because there are so many nicely designed items that grab your attention, and you want to check them out without time pressure. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter This just illustrates how remarkable IKEA's marketing strategy really is. A neuromarketer and author of "The Buying Brain," Dr. A.K. Pradeep explains this "Ikea phenomenon" by explaining how its stores appeal to the subconscious mind, which is the primary driver of decision-making, writes CNBC. "Furniture is set up in its natural environment. Every single thing there is contextually in position. The brain perceives it, understands its inherent value, and therefore desires it," Pradeep said. Marketing isn't everything, naturally. IKEA wouldn't be as popular if its offerings were no good. However, the furniture giant is praised for affordable, easy-to-assemble products and Scandinavian aesthetic of simple, minimalist design. Now the Swedish home goods powerhouse is trying to position itself in the U.S. and rival big names such as Ashley HomeStore or Target. Image source: Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images Over the past few years, IKEA expanded across multiple states, and it currently has 51 retail locations across the U.S. and 375 IKEA stores in 30 countries. On June 4, the company opened a Plan and Order point store in Beaverton, Oregon, located at Progress Ridge Town Square at 12305 SW Horizon Blvd. Related: Another major furniture chain closes stores, no bankruptcy This new format store is the second IKEA location in the Portland metro area. What is a Plan and Order point store? IKEA's new concept consists of smaller stores dedicated to kitchen, bedroom, and living room planning, where customers can get home furnishing advice to help them design their space. Customers can book an appointment with IKEA's expert planning specialists or use in-store self-service tools to design their own solutions. More Retail: Huge retail chain closing more stores soon (locations revealed)Struggling drugstore chain announces second bankruptcyBeloved discount grocery chain has massive US plans As the name suggests, Plan and Order point stores have no items to buy in-store and take home on the same day, but purchases made there can be home delivered or collected for free from one of the stores or pick-up points. This year, the retail mammoth already opened five locations in the U.S., and it plans six more by the end of the year. What's more, two additional locations are planned for 2026. It all started in 2023, when the company confirmed it would invest $2.2 billion to expand across the U.S. over the next three years by opening new stores and enhancing its fulfillment network. This was the biggest investment in almost 40 years since IKEA's first store opened in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, writes TheStreet's Fernanda Tronco. Related: Target CEO offers 10,000 items below $5 to win customers back "The U.S. is one of our most important markets, and we see endless opportunities to grow there and get closer to the many Americans with affordable products and services," IKEA Head Retail at Ingka Group, Tolga Öncü, said at the time. "More than ever before, we want to increase the density of our presence in the U.S., ramp up our fulfillment capacities and make our offer even more relevant to local customers' needs and dreams," he added. As the globally recognized furniture brand makes its way across the country, it will be interesting to see how its competitors respond. In any case, the bigger the offering, the better for consumers. IKEA opens new format stores in Southern California and Bay Area
Swedish company IKEA is on target to open six more locations in the U.S., on top of five already opened this year, including four in California. As told by a company spokesperson to USA TODAY, the furniture retailer has plans to open three locations in Texas, and one each in Maryland, Oregon, and New Jersey. The four IKEA locations in California opened earlier this spring, most recently in Thousand Oaks, where a smaller 2,500-square-foot showroom at 60 N. Moorpark Road enables customers to get support from IKEA experts and access the full range of IKEA services, including free next-day pick-up for online orders. Called an IKEA Plan & order point with Pick-up, according to a news release from IKEA, the pick-up point offers a "blend of online and offline shopping." The IKEA Plan & order point with Pick-up is a new-format store that is part of the growth strategy for IKEA U.S.—it "increases accessibility to the brand and ensures there are more ways to meet customers where they are and how they like to shop," according to a press release. It is also different from the traditional large-format IKEA stores, as it allows customers to meet with the IKEA store team to plan and order home furnishing solutions that require a bit more help, such as kitchen, bathroom, and closet storage systems." In addition to the one at Thousand Oaks, two other IKEA Plan & order point with Pick-up California locations opened at: IKEA Ontario Plan and Order Point with Pick-up, 4150 E 4th St., Ontario IKEA Colma Plan and Order Point with Pick-up, 35 Colma Blvd, Colma In Santa Monica, IKEA opened a Pick-up point location at 3017 Wilshire Blvd. The Santa Monica Pick-up point allows customers to place any order in store or on and pick it up for free the next day, according to a press release. The location also offers the full range of IKEA services with the support of home furnishing experts, including delivery, assembly, and financing. The three new customer meeting points will bring the total number of IKEA locations to nine in the Los Angeles metro area. This expansion in the Los Angeles market is a part of the $2.2+ billion investment in the company's omnichannel growth strategy in the United States. At the end of the 2024 fiscal year, the company reported having 51 stores and 10 Plan and Order points nationwide, with 39 total pick-up locations. California has 10 IKEA retail locations, six pick-up points, and four Plan and Order Points with Pick-up.
