Al Ahly spoil Lionel Messi's party as Club World Cup opener against Inter Miami ends in stalemate
As the curtain came up on a revamped 32-team Fifa Club World Cup in Miami on Saturday night, there was no doubting who the 60,927 fans at the Hard Rock Stadium had come to watch.
Such was the sea of No10 shirts filing in to observe Inter Miami's stalemate with Egypt's Al Ahly, you could have been forgiven for thinking it was a testimonial rather than the opening match of a global football showpiece.
At times in the build-up to the month-long tournament, eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi's involvement had seemed to be as essential to the event's success on American soil as the round object with which the game of soccer is played.
Inter Miami are, after all, not MLS Cup champions, but rather here as hosts and recipients of the MLS Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record.
The fans at least got what they came for — kind of.
Yes, they were treated to a standout performance from a veteran Argentine playing for the pink-jerseyed home side. Yet, it was not Miami captain Messi but rather his 38-year-old compatriot, Oscar Ustari, the second-choice goalkeeper and one-time Sunderland stopper, who took home the man of the match award.
One of five Argentines in the Miami starting line-up, Ustari was considerably busier than his more famous compatriot during a first half that could have seen the Egyptian giants run away with the tie before the smoke from the opening ceremony's fireworks had even cleared.
As early as the sixth minute, Ahly — making their 10th Club World Cup appearance — should have gone ahead when striker Wessam Abou Ali found himself one-on-one only to see Ustari smother his tame finish. Three minutes later, an excellent first touch from Trezeguet led to another Ahly attack, this time the goalkeeper getting down well from top scorer Emam Ashour, who went off in tears soon after holding his shoulder.
Ashou was replaced by Zizo, making his debut after becoming the first player since 2013 to cross Cairo from arch rivals Zamalek.
And he almost had an instant impact when his through-ball to Abou Ali led to the Palestinian forward successfully finding Ustari's net. This time, Ahly were foiled by an offside flag.
The 45-time Egyptian champions' attacks might have been proving unsuccessful, but Miami and coach Javier Mascherano must have known they were riding their luck.
Tomas Aviles proved himself the luckiest man in the Hard Rock — yes, even more fortunate than the few fans who managed to snare a pre-match selfie with their idol Messi — when he took out Trezeguet while carrying a yellow card yet was allowed to stay on the field.
Referee Alireza Faghani, as if seeking balance after his show of leniency, deemed Maximiliano Falcon to have bundled over Zizo in the box when contact looked minimal.
Trezeguet took the spot-kick, but Ustari once more was too quick, diving to his right with all the speed of the giant herons that soar and plunge along the beaches of the Sunshine State.
Missed opportunity
'We had a really good chance to win today,' said midfielder Taher Mahmoud. 'We missed a lot of chances, so I feel like we need to focus on our finishing because in a big tournament like this, if you don't take your chances, it's going to be too late.
"Of course, Messi is a big player — the best player in the world — so it's a pleasure to play against him. It was a big chance to win today, but I feel even the way we played, being so dominant, we were able to send a good message.'
The second half was a more balanced affair with Messi finding little pockets of space and finally forcing the opposition goalkeeper Mohamed ElShenawy into action. Argentina's aging magician, returning to Fifa's global stage for the first time since winning the World Cup three years ago in Qatar, had the vocal crowd on their feet on the hour when his curling free-kick thundered past the wrong side of the post.
And he came closer still. A 97th minute curling cross was preparing to nestle in the top corner only for ElShenawy to tip it on to the crossbar. It would prove the final notable moment of an uncharacteristically action-packed stalemate.
'Of course, I am sad after we had so many chances in the first half,' said Abou Ali. 'We missed a lot of chances, including a penalty, but that's football. We need to prepare now, study our next opponent, and get ready to go again. Next game we need the three points.'
Al Ahly face Brazil's Palmeiras on Thursday, while Messi, Ustari, and Co take on Porto later that day.

Messi falls just short in Club World Cup curtain-raiser stalemate
Lionel Messi drew vast crowds and showed flashes of his brilliance when his Inter Miami side were held to a goalless draw by African giants Al-Ahly as the revamped Club World Cup got off to a festive start on Saturday. Fans showed up en masse for the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, but Messi could not fully deliver, his best chance coming through a last-second attempt that was deflected onto the crossbar. Inter Miami next face FC Porto on Thursday in Atlanta while Al-Ahly, who benefited from raucous, massive support, will take on Palmeiras in New York, where more of their fans are expected to turn up. In Miami, 60,927 fans almost filled the 65,000-capacity stadium for Inter Miami's clash with Al-Ahly dismissing, at least on the night, concerns about the attractiveness of the tournament featuring 32 teams for the first time, a year before the World Cup in the US. Inter Miami, whose home attendances average 20,663 in their 21,550-seat Chase Stadium, have been a major road draw in 2025, regularly attracting record crowds across the country since Messi's arrival in 2023. Adan De La Rosa travelled from Mexico just to see Messi play. "There's a lot of excitement to see Messi, it's the same for everyone," he said. Al-Ahly, backed by dozens of thousands of fans, got off to a strong start but wasted two early chances and Oscar Ustari parried away Trezeguet's poorly taken penalty kick after Zizo was fouled in the box by Telasco Segovia. Messi threatened at times after spending some time on the ground after being hit on the knee, but Miami could feel lucky not to be behind at halftime. Miami, however, stepped up a gear after the break, and Messi came close when his nicely curled 25-metre free kick kissed the post and hit the side netting. With six minutes left, the World Cup winner scooped a perfect cross for Fafa Picault, whose header was tipped over the bar by Mohamed Elshenawy. He came an inch close in the dying second when his curled strike from outside the box was tipped onto the bar by Elshenawy. The Club World Cup continues on Sunday with Champions League winners Paris St Germain taking on Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich playing Auckland City.

Inter forward Taremi stranded in Iran amid conflict, to miss Club World Cup
Inter Milan forward Mehdi Taremi has been left stranded in Iran after failing to get a flight out of the country amid its conflict with Israel, a club source told Reuters, with Italian media reporting the 32-year-old will miss the Club World Cup. Iranian airspace was closed after Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran on Friday. Taremi played in Iran's 3-0 win over North Korea in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran last week. Inter begin their Club World Cup campaign on Tuesday, taking on Mexico's Monterrey in Pasadena followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan and Argentina's River Plate. Taremi made 43 appearances in all competitions for Inter in the 2024-25 season, scoring three goals.

Fifa Club World Cup: Messi denied late winner by Al Ahly goalkeeper
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday as Fifa's new 32-team tournament got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida. Messi was denied a storybook stoppage-time winner when he saw his curling shot from 20 yards out tipped on to the bar by Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game. Al Ahly, who were cheered on by over 10,000 of their supporters, were left to rue a first-half penalty from Egypt international Trezeguet which was saved by Miami's Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari. But the Egyptians also had El Shenawy to thank for another fine save in the dying seconds to keep out a header from Maxi Falcon as Miami pushed for three points in the Group A clash. For organisers Fifa, who have faced heavy skepticism over the necessity for the tournament, the absence of a goal was the only disappointment on a night that delivered everything else that their president Gianni Infantino had hoped for from the opening night. Fears of a low crowd for the opener eased as the seats in the 64,000 venue began to fill up with the stadium almost full at kick-off time. Thousands of fans of Al Ahly, record 12 times African Champions League winner and 45-time league champions of Egypt, arrived at Hard Rock Stadium well ahead of kick-off and made their presence felt with singing and chanting. The stadium, home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins, witnessed chaotic scenes last year at the final of the Copa America between Argentina and Colombia where fans broke into the ground after long delays to enter. But there was an efficient filter system set up for ticket and security checks well away from the stadium perimeter and there were no signs of any problems. Nor was there any indication of the controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants from US President Donald Trump's administration having any impact on the game in the heavily Hispanic South Florida community. While there were no goals to celebrate, the game was far from boring with Al Ahly enjoying the better of the first half before Miami improved significantly after the break. Al Ahly opened up Miami's defence with ease in the opening minutes of the game and Emam Ashour was denied by Ustari after being put through by Trezeguet. Palestine international striker Wessam Abou Ali had an effort ruled out for offside in the 31st minute and then the Denmark-born forward had a fierce strike tipped over by Ustari. The penalty came when Telasco Segovia bundled over Zizo but Trezeguet's spot kick was weak and parried out with the former Aston Villa forward unable to react fast enough to the rebound. Miami were stronger after the break with Messi going close in the 64th minute with a free-kick which grazed the post before hitting the side-netting, tricking part of the crowd into thinking he had scored. He nearly did in stoppage time, after a well-worked short-corner but the outstretched finger tip of El Shenawy was to deny him. Miami face Porto in Atlanta on Thursday before returning home to face Brazil's Palmeiras on Monday and while those should be tougher tests, their Argentina coach Javier Mascherano was upbeat. "The truth is we leave with the feeling that we could have won it in the second half. Going forward we have to do what we did in the second half, not have any fear, shed whatever baggage we had because when we play like that, we can play even with any team," he said. Al Ahly's Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who only took charge of the team for this tournament, said his team should have finished the game off in the first half. "It's a game of mistakes. We had a decent amount of chances in the first half to put the game in a different space," he said before praising the team's fans. "It was like we were playing in Cairo and that was a surprise for me in my first official match with Al Ahly. To be here in the States and have it like you were playing at home is something that can probably only happen in this club," he said.
