Police were called to a collision involving a white Ford Transit Luton van and a black Peugeot 5008 on the A1, near Penmanshiel between Cockburnspath and Grantshouse, at around 8.40pm on Thursday.
The 12-year-old male passenger of the Peugeot was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by the emergency services, where his condition is described as critical.
The 50-year-old driver of the car and the ten-year-old male passenger were also taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

The 44-year-old male driver of the van was taken to Borders General Hospital.
Police said the road was closed to allow investigations to be carried out and reopened at around 6.30am on Friday.
Sergeant Dominic Doyle said: 'Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash and I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't already spoken to officers to get in touch.
'I would also appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have dash-cam footage which could assist to contact us.'

The 19-year-old male driver of a BMW was arrested following the collision in the Markethill Road area of Tandragee on Saturday afternoon. Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the two-vehicle crash which happened at around 1.40pm to come forward. 'The collision, between a white Peugeot van and white BMW 3 Series, left the passenger in the van with serious injuries,' a spokesperson said. 'These are not believed to be life-threatening at this time. "The driver of the BMW, a man aged 19, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving and using a motor vehicle without insurance. He remains in custody at this time. 'We would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact us on 101, quoting reference 720 of 07/06/25.'

A North Wales Police statement said: "A man has sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries following a collision near Whitchurch earlier this morning (Tuesday, June 3). "At 05:37 North Wales Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles – a red coloured Peugeot 306 and a Ford Transit van on the A525 Hanmer. "The emergency services were called to the scene including the Air Ambulance and the driver of the Peugeot was airlifted to hospital in Stoke with serious injuries. The driver and passenger from the Transit were taken to the Maelor Hospital." Anybody who may have been travelling along the A525 just prior to the collision and who may have dash cam footage are asked to contact North Wales Police via webchat or by calling 101 quoting reference number C080440.
