Narayanasamy making false claims of dispute between Puducherry L-G and CM: Home Minister
Accusing former Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy of giving false statements about differences of opinion between Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on administrative matters, Home Minister A. Namassivayam said the Congress leader was trying to mislead the people of the Union Territory (UT), as he was not able to 'digest' the smooth functioning of the AINRC-BJP government.
Speaking to reporters after attending a Tiranga Victory Rally, organised by Pondicherry University on its campus on Saturday (May 17, 2025), the Home Minister said the former Chief Minister was always in the 'habit of making false claims and untrue statements.'
After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power in the UT under the leadership of Mr. Rangasamy, several schemes that were stalled during the tenure of Mr. Narayanasamy were relaunched, and new schemes initiated. The AINRC-BJP government was able to reopen ration shops and launch several welfare schemes announced in the Assembly, he said.
'He cannot digest the performance of the government in initiating welfare schemes. If there were differences of opinion between the Lt. Governor and Chief Minister, the administration could not have executed so many schemes. The implementation of the schemes has created a good name for the government and because of that, Mr. Narayanasamy is worried, and he wants to confuse the voters,' he said.
'No differences of opinion'
Stressing that there were no differences of opinion between the Lt. Governor and Chief Minister, the BJP leader said Mr. Kailashnathan has extended full support to the government in implementing schemes. The government had introduced 10% reservation for NEET-qualified government school students for admission to medical colleges. A similar quota was planned to be introduced for government school students in other higher education courses, he said.
'The Lt. Governor is keen that the provision for 10% reservation for government school students in non-medical courses is implemented quickly. On Friday [May 16], he [Lt Governor] called me and asked when the file related to 10% reservation for government school students in all higher educational institutions is going to be sent. If there were differences, the Lt. Governor would not take such a positive stand,' Mr. Namassivayam, who is also the Education Minister, said.
Earlier in the day, the Lt. Governor and Mr. Namassivayam participated in the Tiranga Rally on the campus. The rally is held across the country to express solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces for the military strikes against Pakistan in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Opposition demands details of Supreme Court findings on Justice Varma
Some Opposition parties are urging the government to share with them the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed panel against high court judge Yashwant Varma in the "cash seizure" case as the ruling side is seeking multi-party support for its push for bringing an impeachment motion against the judge. The more damning the findings, the more inclined the Opposition would be to back the proposed impeachment move, said people familiar with the matter, even as leaders of Opposition parties including the Congress were still firming up their formal response. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju informally reached out to at least two Congress MPs, and some regional parties, seeking support for the motion. "I can't say what is going on between the government and Opposition on the impeachment issue. But, according to the rules, the Members of Parliament, not the government, can move an impeachment motion against a judge with the required number of signatures for admission. So, for us MPs, to sign the proposed impeachment motion, we would require knowing what exactly the case for impeachment against justice Varma is," said Congress' Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha, a senior advocate. "So, we expect the government side to share with the Opposition the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed panel that looked into the complaints against justice Varma." Tankha had earlier written to the Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, urging him to take steps to ensure MPs' get access to the panel's findings. Some sections in the Opposition nurse a grudge against the government earlier opposing and blocking the Opposition push for impeachment of the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav. There is yet another section which views the case against justice Varma with a sense of suspicion and as part of a crafty manoeuvre. Yet, many in the Opposition feel that the prospect of the ruling side unveiling, formally or informally, critical findings of corruption by the Supreme Court-appointed panel against justice Varma, and the fact that the CJI had forwarded that findings to the government for considering action against the judge, would guide the Opposition's response. At the same time, the independence of the judiciary is crucial and the judiciary must remain free from political influence," said D Raja of the CPI, which has two MPs in both Houses.
