Valour FC gets out of basement in front of record-breaking crowd
Valour FC gave some students plenty to cheer about in their inaugural school day match. The Winnipeg club scored three times in a game for the first time all season as they defeated Vancouver FC 3-1 in front of a record-breaking crowd Wednesday morning at Princess Auto Stadium. The announced attendance was 11,390, which shattered their old record by almost two-thousand fans as 9,699 attended their first-ever match back in 2019. Valour fell behind one-nil in the 17th minute, but they scored late in the half and then added two more markers in the second half for just their second league victory of the season. 'Emotionally the guys were hyped and they felt the energy,' said Valour FC general manager and head coach Phillip Dos Santos. 'You go down one-zero and sometimes the balloon can deflate and they didn't. The win leapfrogs Valour FC past Vancouver and into a tie for sixth place in the Canadian Premier League standings after not getting the desired result in a nil-nil draw on Sunday. 'Huge,' said Twardek. 'For morale, it's massive. We obviously have a little bit of a gap between games now, so it gives you real positive emotions to sit on for, I don't know, 10 days or so. 'Naturally it was a really, really quick turnaround. We felt we should have beat Pacific. We felt that we were pressing for a goal, so when today started we went in hungry, ready to get chances, and to score goals today.' Both teams played the second half with only 10 men after Gianfranco Facchineri and Kunle Dada-Luke were issued red cards after an altercation that ended with a shoving match late in the opening half. Valour FC forward Shaan Hundal was stopped on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Valour is now unbeaten in their last five straight matches on the home pitch. They now have two wins, five losses, and two draws in their first nine league matches of the season. ‘The talent and the quality is there'
A lacklustre start to the year has Valour FC on pace to finish dead last in the Canadian Premier League for a third straight year. Through eight league matches, Winnipeg's professional soccer club is 1-5-2 for six points, but they do have an opportunity to climb out of the basement and into seventh place if they can pick up a win Wednesday morning against Vancouver FC (1-4-3) at Princess Auto Stadium. Despite the discouraging start, Valour defender Gianfranco Facchineri believes the group can turn things around. The Valour lost their home-opener in a heartbreaker in stoppage time to Halifax in April. 'Confidence is high in the locker room right now. Now it's a matter of putting everything in our process together and stringing some results together,' said Facchineri on Tuesday. 'Every game is incredibly important, but (Wednesday) is a game against a team where we're very clearly in a playoff push with… It's one on the calendar you look at and (we) would love to walk away with three points… I think we've had to iron out some buffs and I think we've done that now.' 'I believe now is a time where this team will pick itself up and give our fans something to be proud of.' It would help tremendously if Valour could find the back of the net. They've only scored six times in CPL play, whereas first-place Atlético Ottawa (5-1-3) has 24 goals in nine matches. Valour's last outing was a scoreless draw against visiting Pacific FC on Sunday. Forward Shaan Hundal and defender Kelsey Egwu lead the Winnipeg side with two goals apiece. 'We've had good chances and we've gotten to those last 30 yards. And sometimes you just have to make that right decision at the right time instead of taking those 30-yard shots,' said head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos. 'I think the talent and the quality is there. We just have to find a way and make sure it happens sooner than later.' Valour has shown flashes that they can play at a high level. There's no better example than May 20 when they earned a 2-2 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal at home in what was arguably the club's most impressive result in their seven-year history. Michael Bradley, David Edgar join Canada as guest coaches during June FIFA window
Article content Bradley will only be with Canada for the Halifax camp while Edgar, an assistant coach with the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC, will also be in Toronto. The 37-year-old Bradley, who won 151 caps for the U.S. from 2006 to 2019, retired after the 2023 MLS season, his 10th with Toronto. After retiring, he joined father Bob Bradley's coaching staff at Norway's Stabaek. The 38-year-old Edgar won 42 caps for Canada from 2011 to 2018. The defender retired at the end of the 2020 CPL season with Forge after a career that included stops in Canada with the Ottawa Fury and Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as stints in England (Newcastle, Burnley, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United, Hartlepool), the U.S. (Nashville SC) and Wales (Swansea City). Marsch, who played for Bob Bradley at D.C. United and the Chicago Fire, has made a habit of bringing in guest coaches to Canada camps. Others previously invited included CPL coaches Mauro Eustaquio (York United) and Patrice Gheisar (Halifax Wanderers) and former Canadian internationals Dwayne De Rosario, Paul Stalteri and Martin Nash.
