'Rare' cyclone Alfred swirls off Australia's east coast, residents urged to evacuate
Australia braced for a rare east coast tropical cyclone that is swirling towards Brisbane, its third-most populous city, with authorities urging residents in flood-prone suburbs to evacuate soon.
Storm warnings on Wednesday stretched for more than 500 kilometres across the coast in the states of Queensland and New South Wales, impacting millions of people.
Destructive wind gusts of up to 155kph could develop from Thursday afternoon and tropical cyclone Alfred is expected to land as a category-two storm early on Friday morning near Brisbane, Queensland's capital.
Schools to close, public transport to shut down
Schools in southeast Queensland will close and public transport will shut down on Thursday and Friday.
A total of 122 schools in the north of New South Wales will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, and vulnerable residents will be urged to relocate by Thursday morning, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said.
"We need to bunker down over the next 48 hours and get through what may be a very difficult time," he told reporters.
Qantas said it had cancelled a number of flights from southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales and more were likely over the coming days.
The Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned WPGA Championship event was called off and the Australian Football League has postponed two matches in southern Queensland.
Total rainfall from the event could be as much as 800 mm (31.5 inches) in some regions, more than the average total for March and could cause life-threatening flash flooding, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
"This is a very rare event for south-east Queensland ... it has been many decades since this part of the state experienced (a cyclone)," Queensland Premier David Crisafulli told reporters. He called on residents to heed evacuation orders.
"If you are in a storm tide zone or you're in an area where you know there is riverine flooding, you really need to consider and think about your evacuation plan now," Crisafulli said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said heavy-lift helicopters have been deployed and offered to "provide whatever resources are required" for the state governments.
Many residents have left their homes as authorities rush to open evacuation centres. Sandbags are in short supply and supermarket shelves have been stripped bare as people stock up on essentials.
Southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales were last hit by a cyclone more than half a century ago in 1974. The last time a cyclone threatened Brisbane was in 1990 but the system tracked south just before reaching the city.

Brisbane to build main stadium on parkland for 2032 Olympics
A new 60,000-seat stadium and a national aquatics centre will be built in an inner city Brisbane park for the 2032 Olympics, Queensland State Premier David Crisafulli announced on Tuesday as he unveiled the third venue plan for the Games. Crisafulli said another 20,000-seat boutique stadium would be constructed at Brisbane Showgrounds, while some events have been moved out of the city to regional Queensland. Brisbane's Queensland Tennis Centre will be upgraded with the addition of a new 3,000-seat showcourt, while the Gabba ground will host cricket at the Games before being torn down. The issue of venues has been a matter of much political conflict since the Games were awarded to Brisbane in 2021 and Crisafulli said organisers could now get started on constructing and refurbishing the various arenas. "Finally, Queensland has a plan," Crisafulli said in Brisbane. "The time has come to just get on with it. We will." A A$2.5 billion ($1.57 billion) indoor arena and entertainment venue which was to have been paid for by the federal government will now be put out to private tender with the promised funds going to other infrastructure. Crisafulli is likely to come under fire for the stadium plan as he went on the record opposing the construction of a new arena in the city in the run-up to the state elections that brought him to power last November. "It's my decision," he added. "I wasn't prepared to take the politically easy option when the truth is that wouldn't be of benefit to the state. "I believe in this plan and I think Queensland is going to back it." Environmental lobby group Save Victoria Park picketed outside Crisafulli's announcement on Tuesday and issued an open letter last week saying any construction in the park for the Olympics would be an embarrassment for Brisbane. "Do we really want to be known as the city that concretes over its historic parkland for a mega stadium?" said spokesperson Sue Bremner. Another major reverse on venues looks unlikely, however, as Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) chief executive Matt Carroll has already warned that the plan needs to be in place by the end of June. The AOC on Tuesday welcomed the announcement as a "very positive step towards delivering a successful Games". Tuesday's announcement came on the back of a second review of the venue options undertaken by a seven-person panel, which reported earlier this month. The government said they had adopted over 90% of the panel's recommendations. Queensland is nearly five times the size of Japan and Crisafulli said it was only fair that the whole state would take part in hosting the Games. The rowing will now take place on a crocodile-infested river in Rockhampton some 600 km to the north of Brisbane, while sailing events will be staged in the Whitsunday Islands near the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane organising committee chief Andrew Liveris said he had been in contact over the plans with Kirsty Coventry, who is the International Olympic Committee's point person for the Games and was elected as the new head of the Olympic movement last week. "This is a go-get-it-done plan and this will be delivered," he said. "Queensland gets the best of venues, the Games get the best of Queensland." Crisafulli said a new 25,000-seat national aquatics centre would also be built in the same Victoria Park, another 20,000-seat stadium will be constructed at Brisbane Showgrounds, while other events have been moved to regional Queensland.

"Finally, Queensland has a plan. The time has come to just get on with it. Although official costs are yet to be released, Australia has previously set aside around $4 billion for Games infrastructure.
