PETALING JAYA : Moments after announcing his departure from Umno, Tengku Zafrul Aziz said he would be flying to Saudi Arabia to perform the haj pilgrimage.
In a Facebook post tonight, Tengku Zafrul said he held a prayer gathering attended by friends and family yesterday ahead of his pilgrimage.
He also wrote: 'I would like to take this opportunity to ask for forgiveness from everyone reading this message if I have ever spoken harshly or fallen short in any way throughout our acquaintance.'
Tengku Zafrul had announced earlier this evening that he has submitted his resignation as an Umno member today and would be applying to join PKR, led by Anwar Ibrahim.
Citing 'compatibility and suitability', Tengku Zafrul said he decided to leave Umno after seeking advice from friends within and outside the party, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and also headed the Kota Raja Umno division. His announcement drew a sharp response from Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who urged Tengku Zafrul to relinquish his Cabinet post as well.
Tengku Zafrul is the minister for investment, trade and industry in Anwar's Cabinet to which he was appointed from the senate. His term as a senator ends in December.

Malaysia's strategic role in spotlight as Anwar meets US defence secretary Hegseth, Boeing president in Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today received a courtesy call from United States Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth during his brief working visit to Singapore. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the meeting touched on efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of defence and maritime security. He also expressed appreciation for the United States' participation in the recent Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25). During the same visit, the prime minister also received a courtesy call from Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson. 'We took the opportunity to discuss maritime security, asset modernisation and investment in education. We also explored collaboration with local industry players in training, strategic cooperation and the development of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) ecosystem,' he said. Anwar said both meetings reflect Malaysia's growing relevance in the regional and global defence landscape. Earlier yesterday, the Prime Minister arrived in Singapore to attend the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD), a prestigious regional security and defence summit for the Asia-Pacific region. — Bernama

What gas subsidy cut? Armizan tells Wee Ka Siong ministry just cracking down on misuse, policy not new

PUTRAJAYA, June 1 — Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali has urged Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong to review the regulations introduced during his tenure in the Cabinet before making public statements on government policies related to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) subsidies. The minister of domestic trade and cost of living said no new policies or subsidy cuts have been introduced under the Ops Gasak, after Wee accused the ministry of restricting the use of subsidised LPG to hawkers. 'Its primary focus is to combat illegal decanting, smuggling, and the use of subsidised LPG by medium- and large-scale industries,' Armizan explained in a statement. 'It is inaccurate to claim that all hawkers and food and beverage traders are prohibited from using subsidised LPG cylinders,' he added. Armizan clarified that Ops Gasak is being carried out under existing laws, including the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, and the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. The 2021 amendment, which took effect on October 15, 2021, requires any party using over 42kg of LPG to obtain a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit. He noted that this regulation was enforced during the previous administration, in which Wee served as a Cabinet minister. 'Giving him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he overlooked this regulation as it fell under a different ministry, and his team may not have provided accurate advice before he issued his public statement,' he said. At present, Armizan said the ministry has not taken legal action, issued compounds, or confiscated goods from F&B traders without the required permit, focusing instead on advocacy and compliance awareness. Armizan said the ministry is open to receiving complaints and suggestions and has already received proposals from various parties, including DAP leaders. He added that any proposed improvements, including amendments to the 2021 regulation, would be brought to the Cabinet for consideration. On Friday, the ministry's director-general of enforcement Datuk Azman Adam explained that the inspection under Ops Gasak is only at the advocacy, review, and notification stage of compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

NIBONG TEBAL, June 1 — Police have received two reports regarding an altercation involving two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza here, after a video of the incident went viral on social media yesterday. Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District Police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said further investigations were ongoing, and efforts to trace the suspects involved were being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the SPS District Police Headquarters (IPD). 'Police detected a 28-second video that went viral on social media showing a misunderstanding between two road users at the RFID lane of the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, heading south, at about 5.15 pm today. 'The incident involved a rear-end collision which led to an argument, property damage, as well as allegations of physical assault and criminal intimidation by one of the individuals involved,' he said in a statement tonight. He said the video, which was recorded using a dashboard camera, had gone viral and sparked various reactions from the public. He added that investigations were being conducted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. Earlier, a video clip had gone viral on social media, showing an argument between two men at the Bukit Tambun Toll Plaza, with one of them, who was only wearing a sarong and a cap, seen attempting to attack using a weapon before both were calmed down by another individual present at the scene. — Bernama
