The Race For A Rangers Captain Continues
Is Adam Fox too soft, too taciturn, too indecisive to become the Rangers next captain?
If the answer is "not at all," then why hasn't the defenseman who comes close to being Mister Blueshirt not gotten the big C?
Former player and longer-than-longtime coach Harvey (Hutch) Cohen must be wondering the same thing from his New Jersey hacienda.
"Fox should be the new captain," says Cohen, a distinguished member of The Maven's Roundtable And Inner Circle. "Being captain would give Adam the incentive to concentrate on his defensive play and power play quarterbacking."
Picking A New Captain Is No Easy Task For the Rangers It's not going to be easy for Mike Sullivan and his boss Chris Drury. Picking a new captain for their Blueshirts, that is.
Then, a pause and more hear-this from Hutch: "I call it a sort of 'Do As-I-Do' set up. And, by the way, my picks for the Alternate Captain roles are Vincent Trocheck and Will Cuylle.
"Trocheck has served as the 'de facto' captain all along and Cuylle plays the game the right way. Granted, this may cause a problem with J.T. Miller but he's just arrived. In Miller's case the C's and A's should be earned, not given."
While he's at it, Cohen offered his two-cents worth about the Blueshirts' worthless power play which opponents have figured out and what hurt the New Yorkers as much as anything this past season.
Cohen: "The power play did not adjust to attack what the opposition was giving. Furthermore, the D-zone was man-to-man and the Rangers were not able to adjust to the legal pick plays and thus there were open men.
"Sometimes Rangers players bumped into each other. They didn't show the ability to cohesively switch men when a legal pick was set."
Maven Round Table member George Grimm disagrees with Hutch.
"I've never considered Adam Fox to be a leader," Grimm asserts. "He's like Brian Leetch was as a captain. I believe that Fox would feel uncomfortable wearing the C.
"I'd go with Trocheck. Of all the 'Fat Cats,' Vinnie was the most productive during the season. (That's not counting Panarin who's not a captain candidate.) Vinnie has been here long enough to earn the respect of his teammates.
"He's the least likely of the veterans who Drury would like to dump. Plus, Trocheck would also have support of his buddy, 'Sergeant At Arms' J.T. Miller who hasn't been here enough. Cuylle is the "Captain IN Waiting'"
Speaking of "waiting," what the heck are they waiting for – the cows to come home.
Or, do we have to wait until October before the grand, captain-knighting takes place. (P.S. The Maven just checked; Mark Messier is not available.)

New York Rangers trade veteran winger Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks
Kreider, 34, agreed earlier in the day to waive his no-trade clause to accept the move. 'Chris Kreider is the type of player we were looking to add this offseason,' Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said. 'He has size, speed and is a clutch performer that elevates his game in big moments. Chris also upgrades both of our special teams units, something we really needed to address.' Advertisement Moving on from Kreider is Drury's first offseason change to a roster that underachieved and missed the playoffs following a trip last year to the Eastern Conference final. Kreider joins former Rangers captain Jacob Trouba in Southern California after the defenseman was traded to the Ducks in December. Kreider is the franchise leader with 84 playoff goals and is third in regular-season goal-scoring with 326. He spent his first 13 seasons with New York after the team drafted him 19th in 2009. File Photo by Archie Carpenter/UPI | License Photo June 12 (UPI) -- The Anaheim Ducks traded for New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider, the teams announced Thursday. The Ducks agreed to send prospect Carey Terrance and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Rangers in exchange for the veteran, who was the Rangers' longest-tenured player (13 years). "Chris Kreider is the type of player we were looking to add this offseason," Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said in a news release. "He has size, speed and is a clutch performer that elevates his game in big moments. Chris also upgrades both of our special teams units, something we really needed to address." Kreider, 34, totaled 22 goals and eight assists over 68 appearances this season. The No. 19 overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft totaled 326 goals and 256 assists over his first 883 career appearances. "We want to thank Chris Kreider for all of his contributions to the Rangers organization over his stellar career," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said. "Chris has been an integral part of some of the most iconic moments in Rangers history, including setting multiple franchise records and helping the team advance to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. "His leadership on the ice and tireless efforts in the community -- which he was recognized for as the inaugural recipient of the Rod Gilbert 'Mr. Ranger' Award -- only add to his distinguished Rangers legacy. Chris will always be a Ranger and we wish him and his family all the best."

Giovanni van Bronckhorst close to joining Arne Slot's Liverpool coaching staff
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is close to joining Liverpool's backroom team. The 50-year-old is the leading candidate to replace John Heitinga, who left Liverpool this summer to return to Ajax as head coach. Sporting director, Richard Hughes, and head coach Arne Slot have been keen to find a replacement ahead of the pre-season period and Van Bronckhorst, who has managed at Feyenoord, Rangers, and Besiktas fits the bill. Advertisement Although a deal has not yet been done, Van Bronckhorst is now in talks with Liverpool about forming part of a backroom team alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs. The former Netherlands international, who played for Arsenal between 2001 and 2004, is keen on a return to the Premier League, and has recently turned down offers to be a head coach elsewhere. Van Bronckhorst has never worked with Slot and doesn't have a close relationship with him, although the pair share similar ideas around playing style and have already discussed plans for next season. If a deal is completed, Van Bronckhorst would arrive at the club with a wealth of coaching experience. After retiring in 2010, the former midfielder began his coaching career in Feyenoord's youth setup before spending four years as the club's first team manager. He then had a short spell coaching in China before spending a year in charge of Rangers. Following his dissmissal as Rangers manager in November 2022, he was also sacked from his position as Besiktas manager after five months in charge in December 2024. He has been working as a UEFA analyst since the start of 2025.
