The Race For A Rangers Captain Continues

The Race For A Rangers Captain Continues

Yahoo14-05-2025

Is Adam Fox too soft, too taciturn, too indecisive to become the Rangers next captain?
If the answer is "not at all," then why hasn't the defenseman who comes close to being Mister Blueshirt not gotten the big C?
Former player and longer-than-longtime coach Harvey (Hutch) Cohen must be wondering the same thing from his New Jersey hacienda.
"Fox should be the new captain," says Cohen, a distinguished member of The Maven's Roundtable And Inner Circle. "Being captain would give Adam the incentive to concentrate on his defensive play and power play quarterbacking."
Picking A New Captain Is No Easy Task For the Rangers It's not going to be easy for Mike Sullivan and his boss Chris Drury. Picking a new captain for their Blueshirts, that is.
Then, a pause and more hear-this from Hutch: "I call it a sort of 'Do As-I-Do' set up. And, by the way, my picks for the Alternate Captain roles are Vincent Trocheck and Will Cuylle.
"Trocheck has served as the 'de facto' captain all along and Cuylle plays the game the right way. Granted, this may cause a problem with J.T. Miller but he's just arrived. In Miller's case the C's and A's should be earned, not given."
While he's at it, Cohen offered his two-cents worth about the Blueshirts' worthless power play which opponents have figured out and what hurt the New Yorkers as much as anything this past season.
Cohen: "The power play did not adjust to attack what the opposition was giving. Furthermore, the D-zone was man-to-man and the Rangers were not able to adjust to the legal pick plays and thus there were open men.
"Sometimes Rangers players bumped into each other. They didn't show the ability to cohesively switch men when a legal pick was set."
Maven Round Table member George Grimm disagrees with Hutch.
"I've never considered Adam Fox to be a leader," Grimm asserts. "He's like Brian Leetch was as a captain. I believe that Fox would feel uncomfortable wearing the C.
"I'd go with Trocheck. Of all the 'Fat Cats,' Vinnie was the most productive during the season. (That's not counting Panarin who's not a captain candidate.) Vinnie has been here long enough to earn the respect of his teammates.
"He's the least likely of the veterans who Drury would like to dump. Plus, Trocheck would also have support of his buddy, 'Sergeant At Arms' J.T. Miller who hasn't been here enough. Cuylle is the "Captain IN Waiting'"
Speaking of "waiting," what the heck are they waiting for – the cows to come home.
Or, do we have to wait until October before the grand, captain-knighting takes place. (P.S. The Maven just checked; Mark Messier is not available.)

The Rangers Linked To Jason Robertson With Stars In Limbo After Disappointing Playoff Exit

Danny Wild-Imagn Images There's one trade target who the New York Rangers may have their eyes on that nobody would have expected. With the Dallas Stars losing in the Western Conference Final for the third straight year and the team running into some cap-flexibility problems, forward Jason Robertson is a player who could potentially become available. There Are Reportedly Only Three Untouchable Players In Trade Talks For The Rangers There Are Reportedly Only Three Untouchable Players In Trade Talks For The Rangers Everyone on the New York Advertisement Rangers roster is open to being traded except for three players. 'Teams are buzzing around the 25-year-old All-Star, wondering if they can seize on Dallas' itch for change following its third straight loss in the Western Conference Final,' Vince Mercogliano of USA Today wrote. 'The Rangers, I'm told, are one of them.' Robertson is entering the final year of a four-year, $31 million contract as he's set to become a restricted free agent during the summer of 2026 and is due for a substantial pay increase. This past season, Robertson recorded 35 goals, 45 assists, and 80 points in 82 games while averaging 17:48 minutes. Advertisement The Rangers are a team that is looking to shake up their roster according to multiple NHL insiders, so the team's desire for change is no secret. It's unclear if the Stars will even make Robertson available via trade and the Rangers would have to agree to a long-term contract extension with Robertson in a scenario where they acquire him. It's all a bunch of what-ifs as of right now, but the fact that the Rangers have been linked to a player like Robertson is significant in its own right and should certainly not be overlooked.

Calls Mount for Umpire's Immediate Firing After Rangers-Rays Game

Calls Mount for Umpire's Immediate Firing After Rangers-Rays Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Congratulations are in order for veteran umpire Laz Díaz, who quietly set an MLB record earlier this week. Advertisement Unfortunately for Díaz, as well as anyone against the Automated Ball-Strike System, we never said it was the good type of history. Those watching Tuesday's Texas Rangers-Tampa Bay Rays game saw Díaz call a third strike on Rays left fielder Jake Magnum. Anyone watching likely immediately noticed the ball was well outside the strike zone. How egregious was Díaz's call? The Umpire Auditor X/Twitter account found that Rangers pitcher Tyler Mahle's pitch missed outside by 6.83 inches. 'With that call,' Umpire Auditor wrote, 'Laz Diaz has taken the crown from Angel Hernández for the worst called strikeout in Umpire Auditor history.' Advertisement Hernández previously set the record in April 2024, in a game ironically also featuring the Rangers. Texas designated hitter Wyatt Langford struck out on a pitch that was 6.78 inches outside the strike zone. 'I'm so serious this should be grounds to finally fire Laz Diaz,' wrote one X/Twitter user. Added another: 'Now that Angel is gone, we gotta put our time and effort getting Laz Diaz off the [expletive] field.' MLB umpire Laz Díaz in 2024Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images Thankfully for the Rays, they survived Díaz's strike zone to win 5-1. Diaz previously turned heads in April after a heated viral argument with Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Luvollo. Advertisement "The MLB has to pressure Laz Diaz into retiring the same way they did with Angel Hernández," an X user argued. "He's just as bad (if not worse!) but never had the infamous popularity for some reason as Angel." Hernández retired in May 2024 after 34 seasons. Diaz has been a full-time umpire since 1999 and became a crew chief in 2022. "If you know the ump's name, chances are he [expletive] sucks at his job," one commenter suggested.
