
Gary Martin: Does ‘wellness' really count if you're not miserably suffering?
As winter approaches and the mercury dips, most of us are bracing for the usual seasonal discomfort — cold mornings, foggy windscreens and the annual return of thermal underwear.
But while many seek warmth and shelter, a growing number are doing quite the opposite.
They are flinging themselves into tubs of freezing water — on purpose.
Cold plunging — otherwise known as ice bathing — is winning over wellness circles across the country as people willingly swap warmth for water that could make even a penguin wince.
Fill a tub — or wheelie bin, bath, barrel or purpose-built plunge pod — with ice and water, jump in, breathe through the shock and then sit still while your limbs freeze over.
Some plunge first thing in the morning to start the day with a jolt while others incorporate it into workout recovery routines.

Part of the answer lies in the changing nature of wellness itself.
Health and wellness were once about a balanced diet and going for gentle walks.
Fast forward to today and it seems that it is not enough to take care of your body. You have to show you are punishing your body and testing your personal physical and mental limits.
Supporters of this frosty phenomenon also point to a range of alleged benefits including sharper focus, improved mood, better sleep, reduced inflammation and boosted resilience.
But not everyone is convinced.
While some research does support the release of feel-good chemicals after cold exposure, much of the broader hype is — well — on thin ice.
On top of that, plunging into an icy bath is a wintertime ritual which seems, quite literally, out of touch with reality.
Most Australians spend winter avoiding the cold at all costs by layering up, lingering in hot showers and cranking up the heater at the first hint of a chill.
None of this is to say that cold plunges are inherently bad.
For some, they offer a genuine boost.
But we should remember that in a world which increasingly treats discomfort as a badge of honour, real resilience might just be about picking what is right for you, even if that means giving an ice bath the flick.
So this winter, while others are busy tipping ice into tubs and timing their plunges, it might be wiser to think about what wellbeing really looks like for you.
After all, wellness does not have to come with a frost warning.

Cochlear launches new implant, downgrades guidance
Hearing implant developer and manufacturer Cochlear is sounding out the market, launching its latest implant and cutting earnings guidance on the same day. Weaker-than-expected sales forced the health technology company to trim net profit expectations to between $390 to $400 million, down from $410 million to $430 million, but still higher than FY24's $387 million result. Implant sales were expected to increase by around 10 per cent this financial year, with growth weighted to the emerging markets as expansion in developed markets undershot expectations. The update came as Cochlear launched its latest implant in Australia, the first of its kind with upgradeable firmware and internal memory. Investors opted to take the good news over the bad, sending Cochlear shares 0.4 per cent higher to $271.65 after dipping more than nine per cent at the market's open. Jenny Young, one of the first to try the new device, was in her late 40s when her audiologist told her she would need hearing aids. Phone conversations were hard, she needed friends and family to repeat themselves and the country music shows she loved had become muffled and unclear. "I just gave up because I didn't know what song was coming on," Ms Young, now 58, told AAP. She initially ignored her audiologist's advice until life became too difficult. "Sometimes you felt excluded, and you tended to exclude yourself because you weren't quite sure what was said, and you didn't want to pop in and embarrass yourself," Ms Young said. After mixed results with hearing aids, her audiologist suggested her for a trial of the Cochlear's new implant, the 8th generation of the device which directly stimulates the auditory nerve, as opposed to hearing aids which amplify sound. The new internal memory allowed users to store their personal hearing settings on the implant, while upgrades could improve the way the auditory nerve was stimulated, implant program director Robert Briggs said. "That's a big change, and in the longer run we're hoping new stimulation strategies will allow better clarity of hearing and better speech understanding," Professor Briggs told AAP. The new device was developed over a decade with the help of Cochlear's 600-strong research and development teams across six global centres. One in six Australians, or 3.6 million people, suffer from some form of hearing loss. Cochlear has provided more than 750,000 hearing implants to people around the world over four decades, and helped children born deaf to hear for the first time. When Ms Young first had the implant, she said interpreting the signals was like learning a new language. "To me it sounded like a lot of magpies talking all at once in my head," she said. But with time and a little patience from friends and family, she was soon back where she wanted to be. "Six weeks after I got my implant, I went to the Deni Ute Muster in the front row and watched my country music," she said. "It has given me back my social aspect, my confidence ... It's just given me a new lease for life." She urged anyone noticing changes in their hearing to get checked. "I just want to suggest anybody that has trouble hearing or think they're having a difficulty - get onto it," she said. "Don't sit back like I did." Aussies should have the right to ‘choose the sex' of their baby, IVF doctor says
An in vitro fertilisation doctor has argued Aussies should have the right to choose the sex of their child. According to IVF specialist Daniel Potter, it was infantilising for medical professionals to not disclose embryo-related information, and the government should not be involved in such a personal decision. 'I don't really see what the harm is, and people that are obviously highly motivated to be parents, you know, pursuing what they see as life, liberty and happiness ... their version of happiness, not the government's version,' he said. Currently, sex selective IVF is banned in Australia on ethical grounds. The procedure is only allowed on medical grounds such as genetic disorders associated with gender. It is estimated that hundreds of Australians travel overseas each year to gain access to the procedure, which is becoming increasingly more socially acceptable in Australia. 'I respect everybody's opinion, and I think that just because you disagree with something, doesn't mean other people shouldn't be able to do it,' Potter, who appeared on Sunrise on Thursday, said. 'I think it's almost treating them like children .... (to say) we have this information, but we are not going to disclose it to you, because we are concerned you will use this information to make a choice that we might not agree with. 'What right do they have to tell you what to do with your life?' The demand for the service has doubled, according to Sunrise. 'The conversation here in Australia, I think, it's ripe to happen,' Potter said. 'I don't know, ask yourselves why, if someone here in Australia does in vitro fertilisation, they know the gender of the embryos, but they won't disclose it to them, and this is information that may or may not be important to that person or that couple. 'But it seems to me that it should be their information to make decisions about their life and what they feel makes them happy.' 'Mix of opinions' Influencer Caitlin Bailey has sparked debate after travelling to the United States to access sex selective IVF. She spent $45,000 on the procedure, which allowed her to conceive a girl. The Melbourne-based single mother, due to give birth in August, already has two naturally conceived boys and a girl, aged between one and five. 'I have three children already. I have a girl and two boys. And I just had this longing and this desire to have another baby girl,' Bailey told Sunrise on Thursday. 'So, I looked into it, and I found a company called Gender Selection Australia and I went through them, and they linked me in with Dr Potter, and it kind of all went from there.' Bailey said she has received a mix of feedback. 'To be honest, I have had overwhelmingly had positive feedback, but of course no two people are the same. 'Everyone is unique. Always no matter what you do is there will be positives and negatives and people who do and don't agree. 'There have been people who voiced their concerns, or they might not agree, but I just usually say that's my choice and my life and what you do in your life, as long as you are not hurting anyone, then you do you.'
