Globe and Mail07-03-2025

Barrick, as a leader in the mining sector, has been selected as an official partner for UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (WED) 2025, which was launched at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 4 March 2025.
London, UK - Mar 7, 2025 - An International Day proclaimed by UNESCO General Conference and open to everyone, WED is jointly operated by UNESCO and the World Federation for Engineering Organisations (WFEO), which spans some 100 countries and represents more than 30 million engineers.
The launch in Paris marks the start of a year-long campaign of events, films and related articles and news, highlighting the achievements of engineers and engineering around the world, and promoting engineering as a career.
Produced by the SJH Group – the official media partner and broadcaster for WED – all campaign content, which includes a multimedia hub dedicated to Barrick, is hosted on the WED website at www.worldengineeringday.net.
As an official partner, Barrick's insights and expertise will form an integral part of the 12-month campaign, which provides a springboard for governments, UN-associated organisations, policymakers, educators and leaders in the public and private sectors to raise awareness of the importance of engineering.
The WED campaign has an estimated global reach of more than 100 million individuals, and this year's theme of 'Shaping our sustainable future through engineering' focuses on the essential role that engineering has to play in achieving the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
'Barrick has long been championing its differentiated holistic approach to sustainability management,' says Juana Barcelo, President of Barrick Pueblo Viejo. 'We are excited to be a partner for World Engineering Day 2025 and to demonstrate our work contributing to the UN's SDGs.'
Addressing the significance of WED, Mustafa Shehu, President of the WFEO, says: 'World Engineering Day 2025 is all about putting engineering in the global spotlight, showing how engineers are leading the way in the effort to meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goal targets, and inspiring the next generation to find out more about what a career in engineering has to offer.'
Jacques de Mereuil, Executive Director of the WFEO, says: 'We're thrilled to be involved in launching this important international celebration and campaign at UNESCO's global headquarters in Paris, and delighted to have Barrick involved, as an authority in mining.'

Peru allows miners to seek permits in area removed from Nazca Lines protection

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Peru announced Tuesday that miners who had been operating illegally in a large protected archaeological reserve around the famous Nazca Lines will now be able to start the process of obtaining mining permits, after the government reduced the protected area by 42%. Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero said those working in the area must now legalize their mining activities since the zone is no longer designated as archaeological heritage. 'You're fully illegal when you operate in a place where mining is banned … but since that cultural heritage restriction no longer exists, they're no longer in violation — they'll need to formalize their operations,' Montero said in a press conference in Lima on Tuesday for correspondents working for the international media. He added that the government does not yet know how many miners are currently active there. The area in question forms part of a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site, home to the Nazca Lines — massive geoglyphs etched into the desert thousands of years ago — and one of Peru's most fragile desert ecosystems. Last week, the Ministry of Culture issued a resolution reducing the protected area around the Nazca Lines by 2,397 square kilometers (925 square miles). The reserve, created in 1993, was set at 5,633 square kilometers (2,175 square miles) in 2004. 'It's incredible how the government is not even interested in the heritage of our ancestors that is unprotected, and will be destroyed without any control,' Peruvian environmental lawyer, Cesar Ipenza, told The Associated Press. Ipenza said once the miners enter, they will create huge environmental impacts, and will not assume responsibility. 'And now that the government has released the area from its protection, mining petitions have already started to appear,' he said. Culture Minister Fabricio Valencia said the reduction was based on 'over 20 years of rigorous studies' and that the true archaeological reserve is about 3,200 square kilometers (1,235 square miles). On Saturday, he acknowledged on local Peruvian media that mining was taking place within the reserve. Wednesdays Columnist Jen Zoratti looks at what's next in arts, life and pop culture. Valencia said the UNESCO World Heritage site that contains the Nazca Lines themselves, covering about 450 square kilometers (174 square miles), was not affected by the change. The AP reviewed the resolution but found no details about the studies justifying the reduction. Requests for those studies went unanswered and UNESCO told AP it had not been notified by Peru of the change and that it will seek information from the government. In past years, Peru's Culture Ministry, prosecutors, and media reported illegal mining inside the protected reserve, including the destruction of mining machinery and camps. ___ The Associated Press' climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Canadian gold miner seeks mediation in African dispute

Barrick has said its employees remain in detention in Mali, and exports from its mine have been blocked for months Canadian company Barrick Mining has appealed to the World Bank's arbitration tribunal to settle a legal dispute with Mali. The miner currently risks losing control of its gold operations in the West African country, Reuters reported on Friday. The request to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) comes ahead of a Malian court ruling scheduled for June 2 on the government's application to place the mine under provisional administration. Barrick's Loulo-Gounkoto complex, which produced nearly 700,000 ounces of gold in 2023, has been closed since January after Mali seized three tons of gold from the mine over alleged unpaid taxes - a claim Barrick denies. According to a filing on the ICSID's website, the mining giant is seeking "provisional measures" to prevent further actions by the Sahel state's military leadership that could exacerbate the dispute. The former French colony is one of Africa's top gold producers, with large-scale operations such as the Loulo-Gounkoto mines, which are 80% owned by Barrick and 20% by the Malian government. Since taking power in a coup in 2020, the new leadership in Bamako has sought more revenue from the sector to boost state income amid rising gold prices. In 2023, a new mining code was introduced allowing the military government to claim a stake of up to 30% in any new projects. READ MORE: Mali and Canadian miner fail to resolve payment dispute Bloomberg Barrick, one of the world's largest gold producers, has been operating in Mali for nearly three decades and insists it has complied with Malian law and its binding mining conventions. Tensions escalated in late 2024 when four Barrick executives were detained and a warrant was issued for CEO Mark Bristow, all on charges of money laundering and financing of terrorism - allegations the company says are untrue. Negotiations between the two sides recently collapsed after Mali demanded a lump-sum payment of 125 billion CFA francs ($197 million) in unpaid revenues, while Barrick proposed a structured payment plan. Earlier this week, the mining firm issued a statement claiming that the Malian government's attempt to "interfere with Loulo-Gounkoto's operations is without precedent or lawful justification." "This latest escalation by the Malian government follows the continued unlawful detention of several Barrick employees - now held for over five months - and the ongoing blockage of gold exports from the complex," the company said. Barrick is not the only Western company under pressure in the Sahel region. In neighboringNiger, French nuclear fuel firm Orano lost its license to the Imouraren uranium mine in 2024. The military government also seized its subsidiary Somair later that year. Orano has taken legal action against Niger's government, citing illegal detention and property confiscation. (
