New L.A. County Sales Tax Hits, Jumping to 9.75% and Higher
As of Tuesday, L.A. County residents will see a sales tax increase on purchases as a result of a voter-approved measure that will support county-run homeless services. Sales tax will jump from 9.5% to 9.75%.The L.A. County approved a half-cent sales tax called Measure A in November, a replacement for the 2017 quarter-cent sales tax called Measure H, which was supposed to expire in 2027. The tax is estimated to generate more than $1 billion annually.Measure A will remain in effect until it's repealed by voters. This policy will affect all residents in unincorporated areas and cities that did not impose their own voter-approved tax. Approximately 60% of proceeds will go to county homeless services and 40% will be allocated for housing production.
According to L.A. County's Homeless Initiative, Measure A aims to reduce the number of homeless and those living on the streets with mental or substance abuse disorders. It also stressed increasing availability of affordable housing. Some cities within L.A. County already have higher sales tax rates and as a result, Measure A will increase those rates higher than 9.75%. Some of these cities include Burbank, Culver City, Malibu and West Hollywood, who's rate will increase from 10.25% to 10.5%.Cities such as Manhattan Beach, Downey and Lancaster approved their own rates in combination with Measure A. Their rates will be raised to 10.25%, 10.50% and 11.25% respectively.Compton, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica, South Gate and Lynwood were all previously exempt from Measure H's 0.25% sales tax, but their rate will now increase to 10.75% as they are now subject to Measure A.Everyday purchases such as furniture, toys, clothes and electronics can be taxed as a result of the measure. Some items — such as groceries, sales to the government, presrcription medicine and certain medical devices and items paid for with EBT cards — are exempt, according to the California Tax Service Center.

Alabama officials recommend locking food stamp cards to prevent out-of-state fraud
HUNTSIVLLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) is recommending that all EBT cardholders utilize the new Lock/Unlock feature on the ConnectEBT app and website, especially the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option which will help block out of state fraud. From May 2023 to Dec. 20, 2024, Alabama DHR replaced $15.9 million of SNAP benefits due to EBT fraud. From October to December 2024, over 26,000 reimbursements were approved for $10.5 million. The Department believes that 100 percent of the funds were stolen from outside of the state. Data shows that around $1.8 million in Alabama EBT expenditures happened in the state of New York and around $2.2 million was spent in Pennsylvania. DHR said it believes most, if not all, of this is fraud. 'The very best thing our SNAP clients can do is lock their card when they aren't using it,' said Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner. 'With the funds being stolen by utilizing out of state EBT terminals, we believe using our newest feature on ConnectEBT and locking the EBT card will truly combat this type of fraud.' Clients can choose from two options when locking their card: 'Lock Card Everywhere' or 'Lock Card'. 'Lock Card Everywhere' completely locks cards to ALL purchases anywhere. The 'Lock Card' option will lock cards from purchases outside of Alabama but does allow online purchases. DHR strongly recommends the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option at all times when the card is not in use. In the event a card is used at a location for a food purchase, the business can access the amount due, even if the card is then immediately locked by the user. Authorization for the purchase is in real-time and based on the card status at the time of the transaction. If the card is locked when the card is swiped or keyed in, then the retailer's transaction will fail due to the locked card status. But if the cardholder locks the card, even if it is immediately AFTER the transaction is complete, the transaction would have already been authorized and completed and the transaction would be successful as long as available funds were in the account at the time of the purchase. EBT cardholders may also sign up for alerts through the ConnectEBT app and website. These alerts include account activity alerts through the app, text, and/or email. San Mateo Co. supervisors to decide on starting removal process for Sheriff Christina Corpus
San Mateo County Sheriff fights for her job by releasing new report on independent investigation San Mateo County Sheriff fights for her job by releasing new report on independent investigation San Mateo County Sheriff fights for her job by releasing new report on independent investigation The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a special meeting Thursday afternoon in which they are expected to decide on initiating the process to remove embattled Sheriff Christina Corpus from office. Supervisors gained the power to remove the sheriff after 84% of voters approved Measure A in a special election in March. The measure temporarily amended the County Charter to remove a sheriff from office for cause. Corpus has been facing months of scrutiny following a scathing independent report released last November by retired judge LaDoris Cordell into allegations of abuse of power at the sheriff's office. Cordell's report made multiple accusations against the sheriff, including intimidation, retaliation, the use of racial and homophobic slurs and conflicts of interest. Corpus is also accused of having a personal relationship with Victor Aenelle, her chief of staff. The report concluded that "Sheriff Corpus step down and that Victor Aenlle's employment by the sheriff's office be terminated immediately. Nothing short of new leadership can save this organization." The sheriff has repeatedly denied the allegations and has refused multiple calls to resign from local leaders and Deputy Sheriff's Association, which led to supervisors calling for the special election. In April, Corpus released her own report rebuttting Cordell's investigation. Corpus has also filed a $10 million lawsuit against the county, alleging discrimination and harassment. Under Measure A, removal of Corpus requires a four-fifths majority vote by the board of supervisors and Corpus will have an opportunity to defend her case. The board's authority to remove the sheriff expires at the end of 2028. Corpus, the county's first Latina sheriff, was elected in 2022. Thursday's board meeting is scheduled take place at the Board Chambers in Redwood City at 1 p.m.
