Negeri Sembilan urges repair of Genting Peras road
SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has called on the Selangor government to expedite repair works on the Genting Peras-Kuala Klawang road that was damaged by floods four years ago.
He said the road, which connects Jelebu in Negeri Sembilan and Hulu Langat in Selangor, could help ease traffic congestion, especially during festive seasons and school holidays, besides serving as an alternative route for motorists heading to Kuala Lumpur.
'The damaged section in Jelebu has already been repaired, but the part at the Selangor border isn't. I will write to the Selangor Menteri Besar urging prompt repairs. Since it was damaged in 2021, we have not been able to use the route fully until now.
'If the road is repaired, it can become an alternative route to the Klang Valley. Motorists won't have to go through Seremban, they can go via Genting Peras from Jelebu into Hulu Langat and straight to Kuala Lumpur or Selangor,' he told a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting here today.
The Kuala Klawang-Genting Peras road has been closed to traffic since December 2021 after it was damaged by floods and landslides.
Meanwhile, Aminuddin, who is also the Port Dickson Member of Parliament, said the state government has allocated RM1 million for a solar-powered lighting programme in rural areas, including Orang Asli villages.
'The RM2 million allocated by the Public Works Department for lighting is insufficient, as there are still poorly lit areas, so we've added another RM1 million.
'This is to ensure that attention is given to marginalised rural areas. It's part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and provide comfort and security to road users,' he said.
On a separate matter, Aminuddin also extended condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the accident along the East-West Highway, near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, on Monday (June 9).

Govt Mulls Setting Up TVET Commission
The government is actively considering the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission to support the sector's rapid development and reforms. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter will be assessed promptly given the surge in student enrolment and the expanding range of training programmes. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs,' he said. Anwar added that he and the Ministry of Finance will evaluate the adequacy of current facilities and explore better synergy among government-linked companies, private players, and existing TVET institutions. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for improved starting salaries for TVET graduates, reflecting their strong employability rate. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But if a group like TVET graduates achieves up to 98 per cent employability, RM1,700 is not enough. For TVET graduates, if possible, we want to raise the starting salary to as much as RM3,000,' he said. To support the ongoing development of the sector, Anwar announced an additional RM40 million allocation for the National TVET Council, along with RM10 million specifically for Melaka to strengthen TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. The announcement was made during the launch of National TVET Day 2025 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said operational issues, such as shortage of qualified drivers and disruption to services, are challenges that could be overcome. PETALING JAYA : Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called for mandatory drug testing of bus drivers, following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students earlier this week. In a statement today, Mahathir said there were longstanding concerns that many bus drivers may be using drugs, posing serious risks to passengers and other road users. 'I propose that bus drivers should be made to undergo a drug test before starting their journey (for the day). 'If they test positive, they should not be allowed to drive and their salary must be deducted.' Mahathir also suggested that bus drivers who refuse to take a test be barred from driving. His remarks come in the wake of Monday's horrific crash involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. According to police, the bus landed on its side after it hit a Perodua Alza. The crash resulted in the deaths of 15 passengers, while 33 others were injured, including the bus driver, his attendant and the four passengers in the vehicle that was hit. Mahathir acknowledged that implementing mandatory drug testing could lead to operational challenges, including a shortage of qualified drivers and possible disruptions to services. However, he believes such issues can be managed. 'All these challenges can be overcome.' In January, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing said the ministry plans to make urine screening tests mandatory for tour bus drivers before they begin their duty for the day. He said this step was necessary to ensure bus drivers do not use drugs. Tiong added that police investigations have found that some bus drivers consumed drugs after being forced to work for 12 hours straight.
