Cybercrime spree that hobbled British retailers now aimed at U.S., Google says
Hackers behind a series of destructive, financially motivated cyberattacks against some of the U.K.'s largest retailers are now going after big American brands, Google said Wednesday.
'Major American retailers have already been targeted,' John Hultquist, the chief analyst for Google's Threat Intelligence Group, told NBC News.
At least three top British retailers have experienced cyberattacks in recent weeks. Marks & Spencer was forced to pause online orders for weeks. Hackers who contacted the BBC provided evidence of 'huge amounts of customer and employee data' stolen from the Co-op Group. The third, Harrods, restricted some internet access at store locations, though a spokesperson told NBC News that it has not seen evidence that customer data was stolen.
Hultquist declined to name which American retailers the hackers may be going after. As one of the world's largest tech companies, Google sells services like cloud storage, networking and security protections to some of the biggest retailers in the world, providing it significant insight into how hackers operate.
It's not yet clear if there is a technical reason for the hackers to target retail companies, such as a vulnerability in a shared industry software program.
For-profit hackers have in recent years proven adept at accessing the computer systems of major companies and profiting by holding data and entire networks for ransom.
The U.K. hacking campaign strongly echoes the one that shut down parts of some Las Vegas casinos in 2023. That led to MGM Resorts, the owner of the Bellagio and Mandalay Bay, shutting down some casino floors, leaving guests unable to access their rooms with keycards. The same hackers also broke into Caesars Entertainment, but Caesars, unlike MGM, promptly paid the hackers, and it did not experience widespread service outages.
That hacking campaign was notable as the first widely known collaboration between a group of young, largely English-speaking hackers who successfully gained access to high-level corporate accounts, and a Russian-speaking cybercrime group.
That same loosely affiliated group provided initial access to the British retailers and is now going after U.S. ones, Hultquist said. It appears to have largely avoided high-profile targets in the interim.
The casinos, as well as the Co-op Group and Marks and Spencer, were infected with ransomware, a type of malicious software that hackers install on critical systems to lock them up and steal sensitive information. They then demand a payment to either not exploit the information or for help making those computer systems usable again.

It was part of a wider overnight assault that became the latest in a series of large-scale attacks targeting regions across Ukraine. Klitschko said search and rescue operations were underway at several locations. 'I heard a buzzing sound, then my dad ran to me and covered me with his hand, then there was a very loud explosion,' she said. 'My whole life flashed before my eyes, I already thought that was it. I started having a panic attack… I'm shocked that I'm alive.' Ukraine's human rights chief, Dmytro Lubinets, called for a strong international response to Russia's latest overnight attack, saying the assault violated basic human rights. 'Russia is acting like a terrorist, systematically targeting civilian infrastructure,' Lubinets wrote on Telegram. 'The world must respond clearly and take concrete steps, including condemning the aggressor's actions.' Authorities reported damage in several districts in Kyiv, and rescue workers were responding at multiple locations. Ukraine's Interior Ministry said three emergency workers were killed in Kyiv while responding to the aftermath of Russian strikes. 'They were working under fire to help people,' the ministry said in a statement. In Solomyanskyi district, a fire broke out on the 11th floor of a 16-story residential building. Emergency services evacuated three people from the apartment, and rescue operations were ongoing. Another fire broke out in a metal warehouse. Tkachenko said the metro tracks between two stations in Kyiv were damaged in the attack, but no fire or injuries occurred. More than 2,000 households in Kyiv's eastern bank remained without electricity Friday following the overnight Russian attack, the Kyiv City Administration said. The attack targeted at least six regions across Ukraine, leaving a trail of civilian injuries, damaged infrastructure and disrupted utilities. The number of people injured in a Russian attack on the western city of Ternopil early Friday rose to 10, including five emergency workers, regional governor Viacheslav Nehoda said. The strike damaged industrial and infrastructure facilities, left parts of the city without electricity, and disrupted water supplies. Three people were injured in Ukraine's central Poltava region following a Russian attack there that damaged administrative buildings, warehouses and a cafe, regional head Volodymyr Kohut said. Fires caused by the strike have been extinguished, and debris also fell on a private home. Russian forces also struck the Khmelnytskyi region overnight, damaging a private residential building, outbuildings, a fence, and several vehicles, regional governor Serhii Tiuryn said. Meanwhile, air defense forces shot down three Russian missiles over the western Lviv region overnight, the regional head Maksym Kozytskyi said. In northern Chernihiv region, a Shahed drone exploded near an apartment building, shattering windows and doors, according to regional military administration chief Dmytro Bryzhynskyi. He added that explosions from ballistic missiles were also recorded on the outskirts of the city. Trump spoke as he met with Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who appealed to him as the 'key person in the world' who could halt the bloodshed by pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia's Defense Ministry said that air defenses downed 174 Ukrainian drones over 13 regions early Friday. It added that three Ukrainian Neptune missiles were also shot down over the Black Sea.

Why split your time between ChatGPT, NotebookLM and Perplexity, when you can have them all in one place. On top of all those research tools, youa also have your actual project in the same place too. For the occasional quick project, this isn't all that useful. But if you're in school, working towards a PhD or in a research role that requires you to be constantly deep into a project, Logically feels like it has nailed the formula.

Amazon Vows to Tackle Fake Reviews After UK's CMA Probe
Inc. has vowed to improve its systems to tackle fake reviews on its online marketplace and act against sellers who 'hijack' good reviews following four years of the UK antitrust watchdog's investigation. The Competition and Markets Authority said Amazon gave undertakings for to make it easier to report fake reviews and sanction businesses that use good reviews for one product for an entirely different product. Alphabet Inc. 's Google gave similar commitments in January.
