CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — A man has been convicted and is facing life without parole for the rape of a college student in 2019, officials announced Monday.
According to the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD), on June 1, 2019, a woman was sleeping in her Colonial Grand apartment when a stranger broke in and woke her up by sexually assaulting her.
The victim testified that she had never met the assailant, Kasey Levi Lyons Dyak, before the assault. He reportedly entered her apartment by cutting the screen door while she was sleeping, the Chatham County District Attorney's (DA) Office said.
Dyak had thrown her phone into a nearby marsh, so she was not able to call 911 but did use Facebook Messenger to contact friends to call for her after the assault. She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and a rape kit after help arrive, officials said.
Dyak was identified as the suspect in 2023 after he was being investigated for another sexual assault in Florida where his DNA was uploaded from the Florida investigation into CODIS, (Combined DNA Index System). It matched DNA taken from the Chatham County victim taken in 2019.
Officials found that Dyak was in town working at a local carnival being held approximately 2 miles from her Whitemarsh Island apartment.
He was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, false imprisonment, rape and aggravated sodomy in 2023.
DA Jones wanted to highlight the bravery of the survivor who waited six years for justice and 'who with poise and grace testified emotionally during the trial facing her attacker in court.'
Dyak will be sentenced at a later date.

Man planned sex acts with girl, told her he's ‘built like Spongebob,' PA cops say

An Indiana man is accused of trying to meet a runaway teen for sex acts, but it really was police waiting for him, officials say. James Raber of Arlington is facing charges of attempted child molestation and child solicitation, Randolph County court records show. Raber is 63 years old, WXIN reported. Over the course of several weeks, Raber sent sexually explicit messages through Facebook Messenger to a 13-year-old girl named Steph — but Steph was actually a fake profile used by a detective with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, according to a probable cause statement filed May 30. In the highly graphic messages, Raber repeatedly told Steph about sex acts he wanted to do with her, according to the statement. 'How's my sexy girl this morning?' Raber asked in a May 14 message, the statement said. The detective responded about 12 hours later as Steph, saying she had run away from home and was 'hiding' at a male friend's home. Raber 'constantly' asked her if she was having sex with the friend, said that he was jealous and that she should stay with him instead, and could stay with him 'long term' if she wanted, the statement read. He asked her if she would meet with him in person, documents read. She agreed and they made plans to meet at a Village Pantry convenience store in Farmland, at which point they would leave together and get a hotel, the detective said. On May 29, the day of the meeting, Raber described himself to Steph, documents read. 'Now l'm a very big tall guy, 6'4' 295lbs, I'm built like SpongeBob,' he said, according to documents. 'So if you ever had a fantasy about … SpongeBob, that's me'. Raber stopped at a nearby bar and had a beer, then parked at the Village Pantry, the statement read. Police pulled in right after and arrested him, according to the detective. He was booked into the Randolph County Jail, records show. Randolph County is a roughly 80-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.

Albany man receives two life sentences for 1988 cold case rape and kidnapping

The Brief Reginald Colwell was sentenced to two life terms plus 20 years for kidnapping, raping, and assaulting a woman in a 1988 cold case. The conviction was based on DNA evidence from a preserved sexual assault kit, matched to Colwell in 2019 through a federal initiative. Colwell's life sentences are subject to 1988 parole eligibility guidelines due to the crime's occurrence date. DECATUR, Ga. - An Albany man has been sentenced to two life terms plus 20 years in prison after being convicted of kidnapping, raping, and assaulting a woman in a 1988 cold case, prosecutors announced Tuesday. A DeKalb County jury on May 20 found 58-year-old Reginald Colwell guilty on charges of kidnapping, rape, and aggravated assault for the December 30, 1988, attack. Superior Court Judge Gregory A. Adams, who presided over the trial, handed down the sentence on Tuesday, ordering the terms to be served consecutively. The backstory According to investigators, the 20-year-old victim reported the rape to DeKalb County Police after being attacked while leaving her apartment on Weatherly Drive in unincorporated Stone Mountain. As she locked the front door, a man wearing a ski mask held a knife to her throat and forced her into nearby woods, where he sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she resisted. The victim fled to a nearby neighborhood once the attacker ran off, and a resident helped her call her boyfriend, who took her to the police station. Officers recovered her purse and other items scattered in the woods and transported her to Grady Memorial Hospital for a sexual assault examination. Although DNA testing was not available at the time, the sexual assault kit was preserved by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In 2015, DeKalb County joined a federally funded effort through the Bureau of Justice Assistance's National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), which aimed to process long-untested rape kits. In 2019, testing from the victim's case produced a CODIS match to Colwell. A court-ordered DNA sample confirmed the match. Prosecutors said Colwell had been living in DeKalb County at the time of the attack. What's next Because the crime occurred in 1988, Colwell's life sentences fall under the parole eligibility guidelines in place at the time. The Source The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office provided the details on the case. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office provided the mug shot and arrest record.
